Did anyone use the "fine" china yesterday

I use it every year...and the silverware from a box too. I am in my 40's and we got 12 place settings for our wedding, so we have always used it. Kids do not eat on the china, though!

I used a combination of my paternal great-grandmother's china and my mother's Haviland. I added some casual pieces that blended well. We got out the crystal. I only do it a couple times a year. Why have it if you're not going to use it!? It's fun!!! I really hate using the sterling silver because it has to be polished...but I do it.

We used the china I registered for when we got married. I put it in the dishwasher and don't worry about if it breaks. It's just a dish.

I also put out the crystal. That I wash by hand although I know people who put it in the dishwasher on the gentle cycle.

I'm getting to the point where I use the good stuff more. I figure "what am I saving it for?" My everyday dishes are getting a little ratty so I may donate the ones that are not chipped and use the china for everyday.

I don't have fine china; however, I do have a set of "special" white dishes with a thin gold trim on them that I bought specifically for holiday stuff. It sits in a box until Thanksgiving or Christmas and then I bring it out. I swear I think I bought it at Target years ago and it's actually kind of nice.

I find the whole thing very tedious and would be happy to just use Chinette; however, my mother likes the dishes and the tablecloth and the whole bit so I do try to step up my game a bit!

Yes! When I got married almost 23 years ago my mother gave me my Grandmothers china. I love using it on Holidays!!

I didn't host Thursday but, yes, we use the good china and the silver on holidays--actually, I use it every time we have people over. My sister and I both ended up with a ton more from all sides of the family when my mom passed away and, luckily, it all pretty much complements each other. I did find several boxes of my great-grandmother's china stuck in a closet. Mom had given me part of it when I first got married. I had to ask my aunt why she had about 50 coffee cups, saucers, and dessert plates. :rotfl: Apparently, she used to have lots of groups of ladies over for meetings with coffee and dessert.

I have so much now that I try to use the fancy serving dishes and such on a more regular basis.

We chose not to register for china and silver when we got married much to my mother's horror. I think it's nice if you have it and want to use it. I have a set of sterling flatware from a relative who passed but have never used it. The polishing would cause horrible childhood flashbacks :rotfl:

Yep. I used the occupied japan china I inherited from my grandmother. It's not what I would have chosen, but I love it for the memories.

I don't have a silver set, so that was our normal everyday stuff. And the crystal glasses were still packed up from a move, so regular glasses.

LOL..I don't even own fine china but my mom is a whole nutter story:rotfl: She insists on setting the table with this ancient china and her good silverware that comes out of a wooden box. Does anyone else do this?

Ok, your Mom is my Mom so we must be sisters!!!!:lmao:

This is us (we don't own fine china either), when my DMom was still cooking Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. The silverware out of the wooden box!! :rotfl2: I knew exactly what you meant!

NO corelle is good enough for DH an I....don't even own any fine china yet.

I'm sure I'll get the china from a great aunts family after my parents pass not that I want it or will ever use it.

This china survived the trip from England in the late 1700's - early 1800's

yes, I love to use my nice stuff for holidays. :)

We used our Turkey plates. My Grandmother purchased these for my Mother in 1953. I now have them and can't remember a Thanksgiving dinner without them.

LOVE those!! Our family has a huge platter just like it but I didn't know it must have come from a set somewhere along the line. We live in a super-small condo right now so my sister has "custody" of all the seasonal place-settings and serving pieces; doing up the table is a mandatory part of every festive meal. There's tons of Christmas stuff but we'd all go nuts :scared1: for those turkey dishes!

My mom almost always does, but this year I sent her some of the good "wedding disposable" plates and cake plates that look like nice china and the catering quality plastic glasses.

There was one big bag of plates to throw away when we were through, and it looked nice enough to make my mom happy.

I always set the Thanksgiving table with my Disney Christmas china. They sold it years ago and I have all of the pieces. The thrill I get when I light the candles in the Tinkerbell candlesticks can't be measured. From the Pinocchio pepper shaker to the Bambi sugar bowl, they all bring a smile to my family's face. I even have gold charger plates for the gold rimmed dinner plates to accentuate their beauty. I even have gold flatwear. It is a day of Disney ceremony that I wouldn't miss for the world. They are not dishwasher safe and cause extra work, but no amount of paper products could ever replace them. :)

My Mom used a set of her fine china and the silverware from a box at our dinner. She always brings out the china for special occasions. Its nice to be fancy sometimes.

If it had been at my house, it would have been on regular dinner plates as I don't own a set of fine china. I figured there wasn't much point in it. Eventually, I will end up with more fine dining ware that I will ever need. My Mom has her set that she got when she got married. She also has her mother's set of china, and she has a third set that I'm not sure where that came from (but its gorgeous). Eventually, I will get all of these plus I already know I will get a set of china from my other grandmother. Its all very beautiful and will mean more than if I had purchased my own.

I used my Fransican Apple pattern dishes. This wasn't my wedding china, but I didn't register for everyday dishes. I started going to flea markets not long after DH and I married and I fell in love with these dishes. I still love them today. They are awesome at thanksgiving and they are Christmas colors as well. I have been collecting these for over 20 years and still love them today!

We went out to eat on Thanksgiving and made the traditional meal at home yesterday, but yes, we did use our nice china and crystal for last night's "at home" Thanksgiving dinner. We use it somewhat frequently, actually, as we like the look of it and it's surprisingly durable (much moreso than the "everyday plates" we have purchased through the years at Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. which all seem to chip after a year or two).

Definitely! We use the china we registered for our wedding for Thanksgiving, Easter, and other special meals. We were married in December, so a few people gave us Lenox Christmas china as gifts, so I started collecting that as well, and that's the china we use for Christmas. And, while it isn't technically in a box (we have a silver flatware drawer in the china cabinet), we use the silver DH's grandmother gave us for our wedding for special occasions.

I love that it's something different than our normal, day-to-day stuff - makes it more festive to me.
