DHS bus drop off 20 min walk!?

I think in October 2016 we went from DHS to BC to eat and I decided to take the bus to MK for a parade. The bus area at BC was under construction and was temporarily moved to the parking lot behind BCV. All of the bus area had temporary white canopies. I remember paying attention to it because they were preparing the parks/resorts for an impending hurricane and it crossed my mind if the temporary structures were secure enough to withstand the projected wind. Anyway, I just wonder if those type of canopies could be utilized in the temporary bus parking area to at least provide some shade?

We didn’t find the walk to be all that long, but we did it after dark mostly, so we weren’t out in the blazing sun. I think that makes a huge difference in the perception of the length of the walk. We did hop to Animal Kingdom one day. The walk to the bus wasn’t bad, but standing in the sun waiting for the bus seemed very long. There was one family in front of us, and they took up all the shade under the single umbrella.

ETA: We were at Pop Century, so we were all the way at the end of the loop.

Well, it must be bad, if they have added "cooling buses." No other walk to the bus stops have those.
It’s because the individual bus queues are not covered nor protected from the sun as they are in the 3 other parks. The portable umbrellas do not provide protection for all those in the queue.

What's the temporary solution? The "cooling stations?" In my opinion that sounds unreasonable for a company who markets the whole door to door service....give me a break, surely there could have been a bit better planning/brainstorming...at the very least maybe care enough to not have this scheduled during the hottest and wettest part if the year. They obviously could have built some temporary shading etc., or found a more realistic place for bus stops etc. At the end of the day it's just another drop of the ball in customer service, because who cares ppl. aren't refusing to come because of it...true Disney style and to be fair most businesses.

I have no idea why the Disney people charged with these projects refuse to think the entire mess through. Remember BOG? No shade, and months of guests baking in the hot sun passing an umbrella from one to the next. This project was not an emergency construction project to respond to an unforeseen problem, but one that is in conjunction with other construction updates. How on Earth do these people continue to receive pay for a job not fully realized? Disney needs to make a commitment to their guests who are impacted by whatever decisions they make because this is a deficit in customer service that repeats itself continually. Between this and resort construction with no communication to guests until a mutiny uprising ensues DIsney should revisit how they plan projects.

I genuinely can’t believe some of the replies here. People thinking of cancelling park days over a 10 minute walk from their bus stop?!

We went a few times this week from POR. I timed it once. Took 8 minutes strolling with an 8 year old. Not an issue at all

I find it odd that people who have no issues with this have decided that others should be fine as well. Frankly, I have concerns. We go to the Big E yearly, and we stay all day. One year my DH decided to pull into a parking lot that was a distance from the first gate. $4.00!!! YAY!!! The walk was probably 1/2 mile and took about 10 minutes. Not bad at 9 in the morning. HOly Hades at 7 PM that night. Anyone familiar with the Big E fairgrounds know there is not a lot of seating, there eis a lot of walking. And we walked alll darn day. WE tramped through the State buildings, visited all the exhibits, and checked out the animal buildings, saw teh shows, watched the parade, ate. That walk beach to teh car was torture. 20 years later he is still hearing about that decision. Keep in mind this was September and while it was hot it was not Florida August hot.

Sometimes I think it pays to try to see another perspective. DH is 6'6" and has legs that go on forever. I am a full foot shorter then him and I take two steps for every one of his. Toss in that my DD has a knew that will just dislocate at the drop of a hat, and I worry that this trek may be the trek that places a damper on the following day. We will not cancel, however we will put thought into how to handle this walk prior to our DHS day.

I have to ask if people can't handle walking half a mile (which takes an average person 10 minutes or less, and only the stated 20 if you're walking backwards or crawling), then how do they handle touring the parks all day...?

Please refer to my post above. It may not be the walk into DHS< but the one out. Not all of us are able to walk all day in a park and then add blazing sun within an artificially built oven on the way out. We all knwo how to manage our park days if we have any challenges, but this is a new roadblock we need to factor and there are simply not a lot of solutions yet.

So, there are two takeaways from this discussion so far... reports from people who have actually done this walk and say in the afternoon it is extremely hot and may be difficult for young children and the older folks. And then there are those who haven't done this walk yet comparing it to other walks they have "enjoyed" at WDW and wondering what all the hoopla is about. I don't think anyone is saying the walk to and from the bus stop is littered with the dried skeletal remains of those who didn't make it, just simply that things have changed and maybe not for the better.

Exactly.

So, let me make sure I have this right.
Walk 8 miles (our avg) INSIDE the park, without shade, fine. Plenty of times these walks are 15, 20 min without stopping.
Walk extra 100, maybe 200 yards to the bus, and wait for the bus, without shade. Possibly spend $10 with Uber instead, deal breaker
Ok. Got it.
Hopefully, those of us willing to make the trek will find the FP for Slinky Dog easier to get.

Angi- we generally see eye to eye on a lot of issues, but this one seems to baffle you in regards to the perspective of others. WE will probably use Uber for our crew, but I know that for some, the trip itself is on budget with very few extras. I think that it is reasonable for people to be upset at teh way this construction was planned, and I personally hold Disney responsible. FOr some reason the engineers who design teh projects refuse to see past the construction to the people who deal with it. THe management does not inform guests of the inconveniences at resorts under construction and waits to offer some sort od compensation or discount until a major uproar has taken place. They did this at the Poly, WIlderness Lodge and CBR. They open a very lovely restaurnt and then let peole roast in the sun as tehy wait in hopes of getting inside. How long before a correction was made other than a hand held umbrella that was passed from guest to guest? This is just the latest example of disregard to the comfort of guests. The walkway is what it is, however could not Inn of these people consider the sun and add in shaded areas. No. This is my problem with Disney. They never figure out how their plans affect people and then the front line CM's deal with hot tired and frustrated guests. Eventually there is a response, but it is through complaints after teh fact. Not because the project was fully thought through at the onset.

I am in the process of planning a December trip to the world. Would be my sister's first time to see the parks decked out for Christmas. We wanted to go cheap and save money on the resort, as we are going to be at WDW for 10 days in Oct/Nov. But with this we would either skip the Studios, or try to stay at a boardwalk area resort.

We have a DEcember trip and are staying at OKW> I am adding money to our transportation budget.

Great take on the situation. I hear a lot that the management making decisions don't visit the parks routinely. I think that might be the case here. They seem out of touch with the average WDW clientele. The need for a "cool bus" pretty much confirms that in my mind.

Exactly. For instance, before the final plans for Toy Story Land were put into plae, those people should have been "invited" to wander in blazing sun all day long, eat their food standing up, and then hike their sorry carcasses back to the "new" bus stops.

There is a complete lack of knowledge regarding the reality of "normal" WDW guests vs. that of the VIP WDW folks whose work related visits move them right into the park after having been granted door to door service. I have no idea how this is still going on when you consider the way some of the latest attractions were designed and the complaints that have stemmed from those short sighted decisions.

When arriving at HS, they should have the buses drop you off very close to the entrance - we're all going to the same place! Then (even though it is worse at the end of the day), have you take the new long walk back to the resort bus stop, since everyone is going in different directions. If that was the case, I would do HS first and then take a bus to another park for the rest of my day. That is assuming the stops for the other park buses are closer than the resort bus stop.

First - I agree the temp bus stop needs more shade, no argument there.

But on being in the sun at Toy Story Land. I would be a "normal" WDW guest and it would never occur to me to be annoyed that I was baking in the sun all day at a theme park. Or eating while walking around.
Part of going to a theme park (any) in the summer is that it's going to be HOT. I'm going to be hot waiting in line. Most lines are in the sun - we used to bake at Great America in Illinois in 2 hour or longer lines - where are heat also gets in the upper 90s with dew points in the high 60s/low 70s - soup.
Besides, TSL is not that big, how are you wandering in it all day long?
If going in summer where the heat is a big concern, it's kind of up to us to prepare for it.

This is when for me complaints start to lose steam, one aspect I agree with, but then we start going in another direction which to me seems rather exaggerated.

Even some of vloggers that live in the area, including the ones from the site, have mentioned and complained about the lack of shade in Toy Story land. They have also mentioned that the engineers sometimes don't seem to take into account that they are planning attractions/areas/temporary bus stops etc. for central Florida where is it EXTREMELY hot, humid and blazing sun 7+ months of the year OR there are torrential tropical downpour occurring.

That's fine. I understand people are complaining about it. But for me, that's not a complaint I would make. It's not like the bus stop where I'm forced to wait for the bus in blazing sun.
I was just expressing that I am also a normal WDW visitor and I would just expect to be uncomfortably hot in the summer. :)

The Pick up and Drop off points at Hollywood Studio's are feeble when it comes to shade. The additional concrete and asphalt that surrounds the new locations simply exacerbates the heat by radiating the air around it. It's very 'un-disney' from my family's perspective as it appears not much thought was put into it other than 'throw an umbrella right at the front of the line that can accommodate 4 people'.

The additional cost of more coverage and shade would be minimal when offset against its positive impact on children and other who may be more sensitive. In many cases, parking in your car is more convenient! It's a shame that the pick up point for Lyft and Uber isn't more convenient or else we would use it.

As for the shade in Toy Story Land? I think there are many theories... forcing people in and around so they don't linger, the land is small and more shade would be more infrastructure and impacting the real estate the land holds etc...

The line for Slinky Dog has umbrella's spread out along the line so at least there is some effort, much more so than at the bus stops! lol.... I will be going back this afternoon so will take some photo's and video to highlight it. If anyone wants anything showcasing just let me know.

Yeah, Florida is hot. No getting around that. I have learned to avoid the months of May-September if at all possible. I'm getting older, have bad knees....and I am just not as tolerant of lack of shade, longer walks as I was in my 20's and 30's. I walk a ways and need to sit down for a bit, preferably in the shade. But even finding a place to sit down in Disney is becoming more and more difficult as they are taking out benches!
