Deyki's Make-A-Wish - 12/15 - Maybe not

Glad to hear Deyki is okay! DH had to do the Heimlich when DD choked on a piece of meat and it was so scary!

:cheer2: Go Michelle! Congrats on walking! It sounds like her staying home is probably the right decision.

If you are asking about clothes for early November, you will unfortunately just have to wait and see. November is usually pretty nice down there but last year we were down during a cold snap and actually needed sweatshirts/coats.

Our house is always full of adventure. I have two new girls for the daytime hours for the next several days. They will be sleeping at the foster home where they spent the weekend. The girls are sweet and are having lots of fun with my children. Their family situation right now is intense and needs lots of prayer. I can't post details, but it is one of the more intense ones I have dealt with. I am glad they will be away at night so I have time to process with my children all the things they are hearing. I think I will need that time myself. Too much stuff for such little ones!

Prayers  (PMd you)

Congrats on the new walker!!! As an aside, can you get permission from parents for her to go with you? That's how we handle it. If bios give permission- they can go.

I have taken her on a few short trips, but her bios "want to be the ones to make those memories with her." They won't agree to missing a visit with her so she could go with us.

Thanks for the pm.

The two new little girls have moved on to live with relatives. All Deyki's wonderful locks are gone too:sad1:. Nearly 70 children have come and gone in my home and this is the first time one of them brought lice in! :scared1::scared1: We were sitting in the sun Tuesday waiting for baby girl's visit with her mom when I saw something glistening in her baby hair. It looked like sugar at first, but upon closer inspection - it was a nit! :sad2: I think she may have picked it up at a visit with her family. It's the most likely thing I can think of. I ran to Walgreens to get stuff to wage war on the critters and picked up a kit for her mom too. To not offend I told her it was "in case you get it from baby on the visit." I just hope she uses it!

I checked my children thoroughly and hot combed the girl's hair so I could really see each strand. It's hard to look through all their beautiful tight curls! The girls are nit free and critter free, but I am still checking each day because I am scared. :scared1: I thought I might have seen a nit in Deyki's hair, but locks are impossible to check. I had to shave his head bald. I am glad I did though because I found evidence of the creepy crawlys.:eek: I can't check my own head, so I treated myself aggresively and had a caseworker check me. She found nothing. Everyday I have been combing through with a nit comb anyway and having Nidra check me. Still nothing. Today was the second day of nothing in baby's hair, so I think we are winning the battle!

I have a good 19 loads of laundrey still waiting in the basement. I am washing absolutely everything with any cloth on it. I have bleached down all hard surfaces and vacuumed many times daily. It's insanity, but I never want to find another one of those creep things again! I think it may be safe to buy new pillows today. We have been sleeping without any because I threw all of them out.

The caseworker tried to encourage me by saying that it's an occupational hazard and that it's amazing it's the first time it happened with all the children who have passed through here. All I know is I never want to have it happen again, and I miss my baby's locks! This is an occupatioonal hazard I never bargained for!:sad2:

On a lighter note, I teased the kids about doing Bug's Life for our Disney Family Fun Night this week. I don't think I could stomach it though!

The other positive is the stress has helped me lose 5 pounds this week!

I agree with your caseworker! Many kids from incredibly "clean" homes get lice each year and the fact that you have had 70 apparently under privaleged kids through your home and have only gotten it once is a miracle! :thumbsup2

Great job ridding your home of the bugs. Not fun!

Hang in there!!

This is the whole reason I dye my hair frequently and keep a spray can of RID in my car at all times (really...that's the reason I dye my hair ;)) It is an occupational hazard. However, I've managed to avoid it for the 10 years that I've been a SW. I'm also shocked that you never had a kid with it yet.

I can totally sympathize with what you are going through because my house went through it just about a year ago. It was completly horrible but never really anybodies fault. Unfortunalty the buggers are quick and will quickly travel from hair to hair when giving hugs. I love that my kids are huggers, but unfortunatly it made our family suseptible.

Luckily Aidan didn't get it, the medicine aproved for a 1 year old is alot more expensive than RID. I gave Liam a crew cut and tried to deal with Mia (who suffered the worst) as best that I could. Unfortunatly our carful washing and treatment failed the first time cause it was back a month later. I was than that I learned an important lesson. Wait 10 days and redo the hair treatment. I doesn't kill the nits, and the gestation of an egg is 7-10 days. We did this and fortunatly we got rid of it. I was also told by the school nurse that if you want to do treatment between RID, but don't want to fry your kids hair or scalp olive oil works. Supposidly it sufficates them. You keep it in the hair for about 15min.

Hope this helps, I know it can be fustrating and real icky (for lack of a better word) Even a year latter when my scalp gets itchy (have a dry scalp unfortunatly) I get real worried and start checking my self.:confused3

My daughter had them in 1st and 5th grades at her school last fall. Luckily it did not infect her grade. The principal's wife always squirted her daughter's hair with a spray that had tea tree oil in it before she sent them to school each morning. She also washed their hair with a tea tree oil shampoo. She said that the smell of it repelled the bugs. It may be worth it to keep some on hand. Good luck in getting rid of them!

Thanks for the tips! I have been researching lice and learning lots! I found they don't like coconut oil either, so I have a jar of pure coconut oil grease to slather down the girls' heads and coconut shampoo and conditioner for me. I had someone at the social service agency get all the nits from my hair yesterday. She found thirteen, but nothing alive. Then I went and got my hair cut short! I hot combed the girls' hair with the flat iron on the highest setting. The smell of burning grease was a bit overwhelming, but I think it worked. I have gone through every head strand by strand each day for 5 days now and found nothing for the past three days. We vacuumed the whole house each day and laundered everything with any cloth on it. Every bedsheet gets washed each morning. The interior of the van has been sprayed down thoroughly. I am down to the last 7 loads of laundry. I think we have beat this. I will still be doing the second treatment on Friday just in case we missed anything.

From now on, any child that comes into my home will have a head check right away! I am nervous about sending the baby on a visit with her mom next week! I suppose I will just check her very carefully when she gets home.

:wizard:We had a Bambi Family Fun Night last night since I couldn't handle Bug's Life! We had Bambi's Berries, Feline's Flatbread sandwiches, Thumper's carrots, and Forest Fire popcorn. The popcorm was regular popcorm with red sugar sprinkles and red hots added. It turned out very tasty!:cutie:

So sorry to hear about the trouble with the bugs....ewwww. Been there done that and hope it NEVER happens again (though I wouldn't be surprised if it does...)

Your family fun night sounds like a blast. I used to do that but DH isn't really into Disney or much of the things we like...but that's another story. I hope we get the first week of November. It would be nice to meet some of the people here. How long did it take to find out when you got to go (from the time the volunteers came)?

It will be great if you are there that week too! It would be fun to meet your family.

Everything has gone very quickly with this trip. Within 2 weeks of our initial meeting with our wish granters we had airline tickets and exact dates! I don't know if it's normally that fast. Now if we could just speed up time a little and get to November. I am so very ready for a vacation!

We are taking a mini-vacation!!:banana: I decided that we needed to celebrate winning the battle against the lice. We all worked hard this week. My kids were troopers, and we all need something fun now. I found a good deal at a suite with a kitchen in Rockford, IL - about an hour and a half from here. There is a water park not far from there and a good children's museum. It will be a refreshing break from the city and the stress of this week. As soon as we are up and ready in the morning, we are out of here! :woohoo::dance3:

bug's life... :rotfl2: I HATE the lice!! I worked at a daycare - so not fun!!

Have fun in Rockford! DH may (fingers crossed) be spending quite a bit of time there!! We took dd to a Bible Camp near Rockford! Its a nice drive - until you find out the exit is down for construction!! I think it was I80/90 to US 39 exit closed - we just went to the next Rockford exit and were fine! I know one water park is on the highway that has construction going on!

I have not been on the dis pre trip reports in a while, but I started reading yours when you first started, I just caught up and glad to hear you're rid of the lice. I have not had them myself, but my best friend did and what a nightmare to get rid of. You did a great job, it took my friend even longer.

I have wonderful time on your mini trip, it does sound needed..... And I would love to see pics of Deyki's hair, he's so adorable.

I'm behind in posting! Sorry to hear about the lice! Hope you have a great time on your mini-vacation! We want to hear all about it.

Maroo - I am not sure of their exact dates but I know they overlap with my trip which is 10/30 - 11/3.

We did have fun! We actually stayed about 30 minutes south of Rockford which was great because it felt like we were way out of the city! We live just minutes from the center of Chicago, so every now and then I just need to go where there is a bit more space. Indeed there was construction right at Magic Waters. To top it off, Magic Waters was already closed for the season!! Thankfully CoCo Keys had day passes, so we went there instead.

I know...I know...I am a moron...

But what are your dates?

You are not a morom. You have had all sorts of things going on and cannot be expected to remember all the details! We are going November 1-7.

I will have to post pics of Deyki's new hair soon. We have a Awana directors meeting tonight, so it will have to wait. I still have a pathetically slow dial-up that takes exceedingly long to download from my camera and upload to the site. It gets the job done. It just takes patience!

Here's a short TR on our mini-vacation.

Since my kids were such troopers through the ordeal with lice and I needed a break from all the never-ending work, we escaped for three days! I found a hotel about two hours from here surrounded by cornfields and nature. They had a great deal going on suites, so I booked that since it was me and four children. A single room would have been crowded, and the kitchen made dealing with all our food allergies moch easier.

The suite turned out to be huge!! "What kind of room did you get?!" my kids exclaimed when we entered it. We had a full kitchen that opened into a combined living and dining room. There were two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It had a 36 foot long balcony! The three oldest children immediately claimed a television as their own. Deyki was delighted to sit in the middle of the king sized bed watching the Disney Channel.

We arrived Monday afternoon after a picnic lunch in a nearby park. The first thing the kids wanted was to visit the pool. We swam for a couple hours and went upstairs to make dinner. To the girls delight Princess Protection Program was on that night. We don't have cable, and they had been eagerly waiting to see it. We popped popcorn and had a peaceful movie night while Michelle slept.

Tuesday morning we had breakfast at the hotel and then went to a berry picking place we had heard about. It felt so freeing to drive down long country roads. I felt like I could breathe deeper than in the city. A big closed sign was up when we got there. I asked the gentleman working on the house when they would open, and he directed me to the side entrance of a house. A very kind grandmotherly woman was there. She said they opened this coming weekend. :sad2: When I told her we would be back in Chicago then, she very kindly said, "Why don't I give you some containers and you can pick what you want. I am leaving for the day, but feel free to take whatever you want." :wizard: She wouldn't even take the money I offered her. We ended up with five pints of big, juicy raspberries! :yay::yay: Nidra even found a big frog hopping along the path. It was a great way to start the day.

We returned to the hotel for lunch featuring the berries of course! Then we headed to the water park. The weather was a little cool, so I had a backup indoor water park planned. It turned out to be a blessing because the outdoor one had closed for the season. Deyki went on his first waterslide and learned to put his head underwater! :thumbsup2 Everyone had a blast splashing the afternoon away.

On the way back to the hotel we stopped at a farstand and bought sweet corn. It was the sweetest corn I have ever tasted! Even baby Michelle enjoyed it so much that she ate it right off the cob! That was an adorable sight! We played a family game that night and got to bed on the early side.

This morning it was pouring rain when we woke. We were going to go to and orchard and a recreated hobo jungle, but that plan was out. The hotel was kind enough to let us check out late so we could enjoy the pool instead. We swam until lunch and then went to the McDonald's playland before heading home.

It was just the break we needed before life gets very busy. Now I am off to feed the kids and get ready for my Awana directors meeting. I have to remember to tell you the fun way Make-A-Wish will be involved with a big concert at our church that Awana is hosting! I'll share details on that soon. Anyone near Chicago could come join us!

We got good news today! We were invited to participate in the Big Give! :cool1: The timing was excellent because life has been rough the last couple weeks. I needed something to brighten my day! Thanks, ladies! Your kindness and creativity is so special! It comes at a time when it is very needed.

I am rather exhausted tonight. The baby's DCFS worker showed up tonight with bad news about her case. Things are getting a bit complicated and not moving the way we hoped they would. the next couple weeks could be very important in her life. I wish I could schare details, but I really can't. It's taking a lot of my emotional energy right now though.

Maybe tomorrow I will have energy to post pictures of our mini-vacation.
