desserts at reception?

Hi all,
I'm the mother of the bride. My daughter is having her reception in April at Ariels.

I've attended 4 weddings in past 2.5 years. Most recent was on Saturday. At each one, the wedding cake was not actually served at the reception, but rather sliced and bagged for guests at the end of the reception. At all these weddings there was some other form of dessert served after the meal. For those that have had weddings in WDW or discussed this issue with your WP, what is the protocol Disney follows? We're having a buffet lunch (2 pm). Should we be looking at the dessert menu and adding some desserts?

Thank you

hello and congrats!

there isn’t a “protocol” per se, just what the couple wants to do and how you want to spend your food budget dollars. we had a brunch reception and served the cake. that was our only dessert. you could select a different menu with or without desserts. some people have additional dessert parties as well. i think it’s all about your budget and “vision” as they say in the wedding circles.

happy planning! :goodvibes

I've been to weddings that had additional dessert buffets (which I thought were excessive) and some that had candy buffets (which I thought were awesome). It's really up to you! But as delicious as Disney cakes are don't feel it necessary to blow your budget on additional dessert.

In terms of desserts, Disney will leave that up to you. They have them available if you desire. Some brides will plan a wedding exactly to their local traditions, others will not. It's up to you. Personally I always thought that if you're paying that much for a cake, you shouldn't compete with it! But it's up to your family to do what you feel is right. Keep in mind that if you're not local, your guests are going to be in hotels and may not necessarily have a place to store cake as well. At my vow renewal we did it just like our wedding, we served the cake for dessert and had boxes to send additional cake with people if they wanted it. I did not to waste it, there's always more cake than you need.

Lots of good input, thanks for the congrats too! We are so excited.

So this is probably something we want to convey to our planner then---that we would like the cake served as dessert. I was just concerned as this was never discussed at the planning session (and this is on our part too---just didn't come to mind). But it's something we should have spelled out in our BEO I'm assuming ?

Thanks again to you all!

Traditionally, Disney serves the cake at the reception. You'd only need to put it in your BEO if you *didn't* want them to serve it and instead send it home with people. :thumbsup2

You can add ice cream to be served with the cake of you wish.

We had a dessert buffet at our reception and a wedding cake. Disney would not allow us to send a slice home with each guest, we took the remainder with us.

Thanks Carrie, Chilly & DisneyPeach!!!! Makes me feel better knowing this.

So can we do the cake at the dessert party then, rather than the reception? We have a brunch buffet at our reception....and I'm honestly a little concerned that I will be too stuffed to eat it. Cake being my favorite thing EVER...I want to eat my money's worth!!!

It depends on your location and cake styles. Sometimes they discourage you from having the cake setup outdoors, especially in Epcot.
