Demagnetized passes

Does anybody know how easily a park pass can be demagnetized? I'm just wondering because the last time I went on a cruise I had that problem with my room key. The employee at the customer service desk said it was because my key had probably come into contact with my credit card. I told him that I had slid my key and credit card into two different slots in my wallet and he snapped "That doesn't matter! They cannot be anywhere near each other or your key will demagnetize!" (He was a room key Nazi). So...should I worry about my room key, park passes and credit card being too close together? Does it help if you wrap them up in money, paper, etc? Thanks!

It happened to my FIL when we were there in Aug. He was there 7 days, we were there 10, and his key is the only one it happened to.

It wasn't a big deal though. The guy at the turnstiles called someone over who swiped a one day pass, and they told FIL that he would need to go to Customer Service at some point to get a new ticket made. Minor inconvenience.

We do try to keep our keys from touching each other, credit cards, drivers licenses, etc, but we don't obsess about it.

I have had them demagnetize when I thought they had never been near a credit card, and other times, I know they got put next to a credit card and no problem, who knows.

I carried mine right next to three credit cards for a week and nothing was de-magnetized.

Must just be one of those freak things that happen.

Is there a magnetic bar on the key? I wonder if the credit card and key are stored so that the bars don't touch- say the credit card upside down and the key right side up, if it would be OK. I read about the demagnatizing on another thread and was wondering how to carry the two cards since the holder I'd been planning to take would have them stored together.

I had such problems with demagnetized passes on my last trip. It was a real bummer arriving at the park at opening, finding out that one of the five passes I was carrying for my family became demagnetized, and then being delayed 15-30 minutes for new passes to be issued. I don't know what caused the problem. Must be my genetic make-up.

Be very careful if you carry a Blackberry! There is a little magnet on the "holster." Wreaked havoc with some subway farecards that I had. Might do the same with passes.

Mine demagnetized on our trip last week. Probably because of a CC in my wallet. Like someone else said, minor inconvenience. I walked over to Guest Relations and they printed me a new one quickly.

Mine demagnetized twice on my last trip. I was the only one in my group that it happened to. I never even took out my credit card the entire trip, I used my key as my CC. I thought maybe it was over usage. Either that or I was possibly bending it in the pocket of my shorts. The only other thing I was carrying in my pocket was my cell phone. Perhaps it was that.

Whatever the case, it was a bit annoying. LOL

2 of our tickets went bad last weak, but I think it was moisture (Wilma) and a slight bend on the strip that caused the problem.

Cell phones can definately demagnetize your ticket.

Same here!

Keep your passes away from your cell phone.
My sister demagnetized all of her passes when she put them in her cell phne case. Then demagnetized them again by putting them near her room key (magnetic strip to magnetic strip)

Keep your park tickets away from cell phones or pagers. Also keep them so that magnetic strips are not touching credit cards, or some state's drivers licence ( so have magnetics, some don't. )

Also, be careful on how you carry it. If the magnetic strip gets "rippled" a little bit due to being flexed back and forth, or if it gets wet, bent, or ripped. All will cause problems with getting into the parks.

Also, visually inspect the strip. If there is gunk or dirt on it, it may not work. It may be hard to pinpoint exactly what causes it in every case.

I wonder if you bought one of those cheapy pocket mirrors that come in those thick rubber sleeves, and use the sleeve to carry your pass in, might that protect the pass from all the de-magnetizing dangers lurking out there?

DS bought a little Mickey with magnetic hands and feet at AK and played with it all day while his pass was hanging in a pouch around his neck. Guess whose pass wouldn't work at Epcot the next day? We figured out pretty quickly what had happened and explained to DS not to get Mickey near the card again.

I did read (after the fact!) on the resort info channel that cell phones will also demagnetize the cards. Useful tips on there, if you can be bothered to sit and read every screen in the whole loop!

I didn't carry a credit card with me. I charged our OOP expenses back to the room and had a credit card on file with the front desk. DH carried his cell phone on his belt and I carried mine in my pocket. We all have badge holders for our park passes.

The front desk told us its our cell phones. I carry my room key and cell phone just about every where I go and once I stopped doing this, viola, no more problems.

Our AP's not working has never really been a problem as they just push a few buttons and wave you through but it really stinks when you walk ALL THE WAY to your room at the Beach Club and can't get in and then you have to walk ALL THE WAY back to the front desk to get a new key.....

Anyone know how far apart the cell phone & the passes need to be kept apart? I am only taking my fanny pack so my options are limited. Is different pockets of the bag far enough apart to keep them from being demagnetized?

Bump! :bounce: I'm also interested to know how "far apart" cell phones and tickets have to be... another thing for me to obsess about! :confused3

I always put my pass/room key in my wallet, as does my DH. We have dividers in our wallets, so the passes are never next to credit cards directly, but still snuggled up close. I don't think I have ever had a card demagnetize. I shall be all neurotic this coming trip now. In our cruise documents there was something that said "keep room keys away from credit cards" where are you supposed to keep them?? I shall be carrying three bags, one for my phone (better keep that away from credit cards too!), one for my passes and one for my credit cards. Perhaps it's Disney's cunning way to stop you taking your wallet, and charge everything to your room account.
