Hi! We just did on line check in for our delta flight tomorrow (jfk airport). I haven't flown delta in many, many years, but it was cheap, so....

We need to check bags, don't we have to stand in line anyway?

What was the benefit of checking in online?

Yes you will have to stand in line anyway to check your bags. If you've already checked in online and printed your boarding passes, some airports offer a counter for bag drop only, so you can possibly save some time by not waiting in line with everyone else.

I don't often end up paying baggage fees but I do believe that they charge more if you pay your bag fees at the airport versus online.

All true IF you paid any applicable baggage fees when you checked in online. If you owe baggage fees and did not pay online, you will need to stand in the longer line regardless.

thanks to you both. I'm still packing so I don't know how many bags yet. LOL. So, I guess it won't be a time saver! Oh well!

Delta no longer has a discount for online check-in. If you check-in online, you can go straight to the bag drop line.

Yep, thanks for the clarification. As I was typing, the scenario in my head was "if you pay the bag fees ahead of time" but it didn't make it from my brain to my fingers quite that way. :)

We like to use Delta's curb-side check-in for our bags. We prepay for the bags when we check in online, then just drop the bags at the curb. The only line we need to stand in, is the security line!

The other advantage to checking in online is that you have an earlier chance at seat selection if you'd like to move into the seats blocked out for elites, etc.
