I'd recommend Thunder Mountain, or Space Mountain. Top speed of either is about 28mph. No big hills, or drops.

If you decide on one at Universal, I suggest Dueling Dragons. Don't go near the Hulk! I'll ride milder coasters and I could tell that Dueling Dragons wouldn't be nearly as bad as the Hulk. Unfortunately, I had no one to ride with and I won't ride a coaster alone so I'll have to try DD another day.

I think that Thunder Mountain is milder than Space Mountain because the darkness of Space Mountain is scary to me.

Go slow and work your way up. Go on the Flying Unicorn (don't be fooled, its not as tame as it looks). Then I would go on Fire Dragon, then Ice Dragon, then Hulk.

When I was 15 I had a similar problem so I did the gradual upswing at Busch Gardens, and it worked out great for me, I went from being terrified to wondering how I ever went there without riding them!

We christened a friend on the Hulk.

After that day he has become a fanatic of the steel coasters but won't go near a woodie. He just doesn't know what he is missing!

Then I would go on Fire Dragon, then Ice Dragon, then Hulk.

Funny, my suggestion would Hulk, then Ice then Fire. Either DD with have the added scare factor of the other coaster so near by. I aslo get nervous on the slow climb up. I love fast take offs like hulk and RnR.

I agree the BTMRR at WDW would be the best bet. RnR really isn't bad for a first looping coaster. However my favoirte coaster in Orlando (I did say favorite coaster anywhere until 2 weeks ago. Superman at SF over GA is awsome) is Kraken at Sea World. It is very smooth and it IMHO thrilling but not scary.

I love coasters, but they don't love me. I have had inner ear problems for many years, so I have to take it easy.
But I love coasters so I don't let the disability stop me from having fun when I'm having "good" days. I have to keep my eyes shut sometimes, as it is often the speed of the things in my sight that causes the dizziness, but I just love to go.

Don't I wish someone who hated coasters could have this problem instead of me!

BTMRR is harder on my head than RNRC and I always feel more woozy after going on it. I can go on RNRC twice in a row on a good day, but BTMRR only once. Forget about Space Mountain, it is way too jerky. I think the steel coasters are easier in some ways because they usually allow you to put your head back and keep it somewhat still.

I went to IOA for an evening in April and got to ride Ice. I was told by the attendant and the kids in line that it was less intense than Fire and to try it first. I sat in the third row (the attendant said it doesn't whip around as much near the front) and in one of the middle seats (so the effect of the two coasters near-missing would be less.) The ride was over before I knew it. I thought it was just as easy, or easier than RNRC. Ya, I stumbled down the walkway a bit, but I was happy.

I'm going back in October with grandchildren (yes, folks, I'm a grandmother!) and I plan to ride Hulk first thing. Even if it screws my head up for the rest of the day - I will be happy just to try it!

Maybe I'll see you all someday. I'll be the one with white hair, walking a little wavey-like, with a huge smile on my face.

And to the person who started this thread - don't be afraid. What's the worse that can happen? Just go, have fun and then go again!

kathleena ... have you tried taking Bonine (sp?)... also a little trick I use. Instead of closing my eyes I focus on something about 5ft-10 ft away (like the back of someones head).

Bonine is for prevention of motion sickness so it can keep you from getting sick, but it doesn't help with inner ear problems.

My problem is inner ear imbalance, so after I ride coasters, I can't keep my balance. I'll feel like I'm falling when I'm not. I know that sounds strange, but I get the same sensation walking down the stairs and on down escalators.

I used to think that if I did coasters, I would get motion sickness, but I finally tried a few and figured out that all I get is more imbalanced. But I don't get sick at all.

Sometimes I can pick a point too, but I'm ususally not real good about staying on the point, I want to look around......hahahahah

Hi,

If you goto IOA you can get yourself ready by riding Cat in the Hat (which twists and turns you pretty hard, (but it's just a flat track, a kiddie ride), then go to the Unicorn (it's a tiny coaster, no upside down turns or even that far off the ground). I am sure you can do that one. And, if you've worked your way up to the Unicorn and found it to be no problem and want to try a bigger coaster my suggestion is the Hulk. It doesn't do the take forever to get to the top of the first hill thing with most large coasters...(chug,chug, clank, clank, clank, oh god it's so high up here thing). This one litterly rockets you straight up to the top (like Disney MGM's Rock -n-Rollacoaster) and then the normal caoster takes over and it was an amazingly smooth ride. However, their are alot of upside down loops and turns on this one. But, if you keep your head back, try and stay calm and relax when the coaster first starts you'll be just fine and having fun by the first turn. I would not suggest Dueling Dragons...this thing doesn't even have a floor...(no bottom to the car) your feet dangle down the whole time and if you ride in the very first car you really feel like their nothing holding you in or on the track. I rode a coaster simular to this at Busch Gardens called Montu and I like coasters and will try just about anything once....well once was enough for me on that type of coaster! <BG>
If you go to Disney you should try Big Thunder Mtn. (cause you can see the track...most of Disney's coasters are Dark Rides) and seeing the track might help you feel a bit more comfortable, plus it doesn't go upside down or do anything real fancy. There is also a cute new one at DAk in Dinoland that spins you and you can also see the track on that one too. My mother said it reminded her of the old "wild mouse" rides at the fairs. I drug her on this one for Mothers Day recently...lol!.

Anyway, just have fun and enjoy....these are just my suggestions for you....

motion sickness is caused by the sensory areas of the inner and middle ear. It is very likely that a motion sickness pill would help with some of the symptoms.

Just do Hulk and get it over with. It's only a couple of minutes long. You'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. How bad can it be?:p

Agree. Get to the park at 8am. Run down the midway, to the left, over the bridge, into the queue, to the left for the front row, and enjoy.
Nothing like a water mist at 8:45am to start your day.
The first few rides in the front are actually tame because the coaster is not warmed up. Go for it.

I think a good first coaster is Kraken at Sea World Orlando. It's ultra-smooth and not as bone-jarring as some others. Plus, it has an on-ride photo! :)

I did quite the opposite. As a little kid, I hated the idea of anything inverted. The Ring Of Fire rides at carnivals freaked me out (though, I still refuse to ride them, simply because it's a carnival). I did ride Space Mountain as a kid and enjoyed it totally, despite being scared while in line. Yet, it still didn't help me not be scared of the big boy coatsers.

During a middle school feild trip to Busch Gardens I refused to ride the looping viking ship thing, and pushed my friends to ride the log drop and rapids rides first. But, eventually, they wanted to try Kumba, and I had to just bite the bullet and go along with them.

To this day I cannot fantom a roaller coaster too scary to ride. So I recomend that you be tough, be brave, and hit the big ones first (in this case, HULK) and, as long as you let yourself enjoy the ride, you'll never look back.

How About Splash Mountain at Mk and TOT and RnR at MGM. You get photographs on all these and they are not as intense as the Hulk.

Definitely front row. People think that it is the worst spot, but is the least scary since you can see where you are going.

Kraken is nice. The drop is kinda big though for a first coaster.

I wonder about losing stuff on the big coasters that turn you upside-down. What about glasses, hats, keys, wallets, coins? If someone were to "take the plunge" and vanquish old fears :o (not me... someone else, let's say a friend of mine. Yeah, that's the ticket!) by getting in line for the Hulk or the Dueling Dragons, would they also have to worry about losing their sunglasses and hat, etc.? What do you do to get ready for the ride?

You need to put all that stuff in the free for an hour lockers. They are there exactly for that reason. There is a huge net under the first inversion on Hulk. It collects some interesting items.
