(Almost) Too Old for Roller Coasters

I understand there are two or three spell locations at UO that work only with the new 2nd-generation wands. From what I have read, it appears that you have to do some preliminary "Adventure" stuff in the app first in order to get these spells to work. Is that accurate? You can't just walk up to the 2nd-gen spell locations like you can with the older locations? This will be the first time having a wand with me and I was disappointed to find it was more of an ordeal than I had assumed.
