Decisions-US before or after Disney

So far I have only done US in the middle of a trip. We only do one day and drive over from our Disney resort. If I was moving resorts I would absolutely do US first. As someone else said I prefer going to MK on my last day. I don't understand why other posters have mentioned US is more "relaxed." I find it the most tiring day of my trip and don't even stay past 4pm. Everything I like to do is sooo far away from each other and without FOTL whose to say how long you will be waiting in lines? There is also not as many "sit down in air conditioning for 10 or more minutes" attractions. And for the adr at Disney that you have to be on time to? Better than waiting an hour or more for any of the sit down restaurants at City Walk during peak times.

We tend to finish up at Universal. Disney is endless appointments and we prefer to end our trip in a more relaxed way. It really depends on your preferences.

I wasn't sure where to put this exactly. But we are spending one day at US and so far I have planned to leave Disney and head over for an offsite hotel at US for 2 nights. Now I'm wondering if it would be better to do US at the beginning of the trip instead. I'm thinking it would be better to just go there first and end our trip on a Disney high. What do you think?

Well, we strive to only stay onsite for Universal. Our first Orlando trip we had Disney then Universal then Disney, thinking that Uni was a one-and-done trip for us. Oh we could NOT have been more wrong. We hated leaving Uni, and when we did on our last day we ONLY did because we had a Sanaa reservation waiting for us.

I had budgeted to upgrade to WDW APs because we knew we would be back, but I did not budget to get Uni APs, and we were so incredibly sad about that.

So for the first trip maybe do it in the middle if you can?

I have more to say about your trip but I'll save it for later in my reply.

Ok my next question. Which would be better. US on a Sunday or Disney parks on a weekend in June? And traffic on I4 coming in on a Monday vs traffic on I4 coming home on a Monday? We don't do much meal planning. As of right now we don't have any dining plans. Typicaly the only planning we do is te FP's as I don't like plan down to the wire of everything we are going tod. The FP's are bad enough as I would much rather plan the days at what parks when we get there.

We are staying offsite at one of the preferred offsite hotels of US. I don't think we will have FOTL.

If you can, at all, I would STRONGLY consider checking out staying onsite at one of the hotels that offers both Early Entrance to Wizarding World AND Unlimited Express Pass (aka Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, and Portofino Bay). Being at one of those resorts will turn your June trip from hot and stressed into ahhhh.

The way you like to travel is, exactly, how it can be if you're onsite at Universal.

If you really cannot swing the three hotels I listed above, try for Cabana Bay or Sapphire Falls, if Wizarding World is important to you. Those two resorts give you Early Entrance, which helps.

The other way to get Early Entrance to WW is to get a *package* through Universal at an offsite hotel.

No matter what, remember to include parking in your costs. If you're offsite, even if you don't have parking costs at the hotel, you will at Universal. If you're onsite, you don't take your car to the themepark/citywalk parking lot, but you do pay hotel parking fees.

You need to stay onsite at one of the 3 hotels I listed first, my friend. Unlimited Express Pass from the moment you check in until park-close the day you check out. Early Entrance to Wizarding World (one or both of them depending on their schedule) every single day. And maybe do more than one day, so you don't have to fit it all in!

I book through loewshotels.com. And I always check to see if the APH rate (click promotions then enter that into the code field) is applicable for my stay. Which means that every time I price out a stay I check. If it is available, I do the math to see if upgrading at least one of us to an AP and the savings of that rate equal a better overall rate for us.

I think we're also here, yes? ;).

Always Universal second! But then I stay onsite and enjoy the perks bumbershoot mentioned. We are big US fans as well as WDW.

I take DME from the airport to WDW, then Uber of Lyft to US, and to the airport.

We do Universal at the end. Always. Once we get over there we have no worries about schedule, ADRs, FPs, etc. After all the structured time at WDW, we think we come home more relaxed that way.

Exactly! If you get a preferred room, you have front of the line access the WHOLE time. You get early hour into Harry Potter. It is so nice to relax and enjoy. If you started with that, running around on ADR's, trying to get 4th FP+ etc.. is a PIA.

We did WDW then US on a trip in 2015 and will do the same this upcoming August. When I arrive in Orlando, I just really want to go to WDW first! After I get my full Disney fix, I'm ready to move on to US. I don't think I could land in Orlando and NOT go to WDW first!

Whoops - just saw this. If you don't have FOTL then go to US first. The lines are long so hopefully you will be there mid week and go first thing in the morning.

We will be doing 3 days at Uni and then 7 at WDW. I will miss the DME at the beginning of the trip, but I want to end at WDW for Mother's Day and that's what pushed our decision. We will stay at RPR and wouldn't go to Uni without the FOTL option. Universal is much more relaxing and no need to plan to the last detail.

We will use Tiffany Towncar from MCO-UNI and UNI-CSR, we have used them several times and love them. We always request a favorite driver, she's the sweetest person-not DME, but it's so nice to chat and catch up with her.

We've done WDW then Universal 2x's. We like it that way because we stay in one of the Universal hotels for FOTL. We love the HP stuff and about 8 other rides .We do re-ride a lot. As a result, we find it a low key end of the vacation.

I always do both parks each vacation but save the best for last.....

Universal is a laid back, no rush, relaxing way to end my trips

We mix them in. We stay on property at Disney the whole time but hit US/IOA a couple days while there.

We've done two split trips and have done one each way. Our third is coming up in June, and we also decided to end the trip on the high note, which for us means Harry Potter, less scheduling, not having to deal with transportation headaches, and better food...so it's Disney first, Universal second.

I prefer to start the trip with Universal because I spend more time at Disney and when I leave, I'm left with an unbearable sadness. (At which point I eat all of the calories and regain the weight I've lost pre-trip.) So if I left Disney and went to Universal, I'd be sad knowing I couldn't go back to Disney, even though I'm still in Orlando and with a close proximity. It's almost easier to just rip off the bandaid at the end, rather than hanging around after. But I'm a crazy person. :)

I DO think that going from Universal (where I have yet to really encounter any kind of talkative or engaging team member/cast member/employee) to Disney is a big difference. I talked to a CM in a gift shop for five minutes and she was so excited to talk to me that she gave me fast passes. (It was very unexpected, but very much appreciated.) I obviously don't need and or want to be rewarded for talking to people like they're human beings. But it's really DIFFERENT going from Disney, where people WANT to talk to you, to Universal, where that ambiance and the friendliness isn't there.

We had 2 days at USO in September and going from more thrilling rides to Disney didn't make me wish to be back in US or anything. I spend so much time wanting to be in Disney, I was SO excited to be there when we were done at US. But again, I'm a crazy person.

You could still go to disney if you really missed it. Well, if you had admissions left. :)

We have very different experiences with universal vs Disney employees.

But it's really DIFFERENT going from Disney, where people WANT to talk to you, to Universal, where that ambiance and the friendliness isn't there.

Seriously opposite experiences I've gotten the thousand mile stare as I try to talk to a CM as a rule. The TMs at uni have the time and energy to listen as I talk. They are chatty and kind.

@bumbershoot I'm sure we have had totally different experiences. :) I've been there three times, once when I was a kid, once in 2014, and then in September of 2016. In 2014, we only went for one day. The people we tried to talk to basically blew us off. Which is fine, they're all doing a job. In 2016, the lady that checked us into the hotel was very nice! But beyond her, no one really engaged with us again.

Does that mean I'll stop going to Universal? Heck no. I LOVE Universal. Does it mean I want to end with it? Not really. I've stopped so many different times and connected with so many different CMs at Disney. We take all of their names down and turn them in to guest relations so they get recognized.

But just because that's my experience, doesn't mean it has to be anyone else's. I still love the hotel we stayed in. (Not more than AKL, though.) And our proximity to the park was awesome. This time, both parks are closing at 6pm on two of the nights I'm there. If I was ending my vacation like that, I'd be really bummed. Because Disney has four parks, if they shut one early, at least one of the other three will be open much later to compensate.

And unfortunately, unless I plan on buying an annual pass (which would break me if I did and then couldn't get back and watched it expire...), I will not be able to go back to Disney if I already have moved from one place to the other.

we did US at the end of our last 6 day trip to WDW.
It worked for us because it was a spur of the moment 8th grade graduation present to my niece from my dad (the US tickets and hotel). He even splurged for park to park so she could ride the Hogwarts Express. Plus we couldn't leave earlier so putting it at the end was all we could do.

we were just there for one day but the reason I liked putting it at the end is because I wanted to see if we were Wow'ed enough since we had been at WDW. We were.

When I am in Disney mode that is all I want. So for us going to US (if we go back) at the end is more enjoyable. I loved US especially HP but I do not ever see us staying more than a day or 2 at US in the future.

OP, as you can see it all depends on style and preference. I always said I would end my WDW trip with Wishes and now that will be gone, but I still want to take a spin around the MK before driving home.

I think for us this trip is different than any other so far. We are going to have our own car, we are going during a holiday week, going for the longest stretch ever, etc. I am not sure I would begin with US under another circumstance. It just depends on too many variables.

We have done 5 or 6 split days in the last few years and we prefer to end at Universal. Some trips require the opposite and that is OK too. For the 1st time trip I would actually suggest Universal first because you will have a lot of energy and get a lot done. Once you realize how relaxing it is and pan a subsequent trip, it's super sweet to end the Disney trip with still more relaxing days and not leave Disney all super depressed.

We are doing Universal first on our upcoming trip and staying on-property for two nights. Last trip we did a day at US mid-week while staying at Disney. I'm interested to see how staying on-site with the express pass impacts the trip. I have to say that last time I found Universal to be a lot less magical overall. While I loved, loved, loved WWOHP, the rest of the park doesn't hold a ton of interest for me. It was so hot. There's little shade. I kept having to duck in gift shops to cool off. The lines were so long. Outside of HP the only ride we did was ET which was a big disappointment. Part of this is probably that I'm just tons more familiar with Disney and have a better strategy, to be sure. We'll see how much FOTL access changes my opinion!

When I started doing universal after going to wdw back in 1974, it was an adjustment

After trips to UO starting in 1992, I started to enjoy it more as a one day visit only

After UO grew, went there every time I did my wdw vacations
And would stay on site when hotels first went up onsite

Once I felt familiar and at "home" there, became very attached and could
not be in Orlando without doing both parks and resorts

UO grew on me and feel like it is home

It is not just the parks that keep me going there during the year
I'm there for the total package of city walk, entertainment, hotels, etc

I know not everyone feels the same as I do
