Debt Dumpers - 2015

Does anyone here use Mint? Is there a way to hide a sub-account so it doesn't count it in your available funds? I use Capital One 360 for checking and savings and have a savings account there for each of my kids. Because they are set up as sub accounts under my main account, Mint includes them as part of my available cash, but I don't want them included. I've played around with it but can't find a way to hide them.

I've tried mint before, never could make it work for me. Have had much better luck using Quicken.

Do you have an apple computer? We love using iBank and it's free. :)

I downloaded and set up YNAB last night and really like it so far. I think I'll stick with that and ditch Mint. The only thing with YNAB is going to be getting in the habit of entering in all of my spending, and getting DW to do the same. The app is really easy/fast to do so though so hopefully it will be an easy habit to form.

On the Debt Dumping train too!
We just set up YNAB last night. My husband was so psyched with the program and was really happy that I found it.

So THANKS Disers! You made me look good last night! :rotfl:

Ynab is on sale today!!!
It's worth every penny at the regular $60, but if you can get it for 15 why not!

Steam is currently selling YNAB at a 75% discount ($14.99) for the next twenty four hours. http://store.steampowered.com/app/227320/ FAQ about Steam & YNAB through Steam: Q: What is Steam? A: Steam is the world's largest digital website/seller of video games. They also sell additional applications which is why YNAB is on there. Q: How does it work? A: You create an account and download the Steam program. You then use the program to buy games/applications. You can also purchase games/applications as gifts for others. Q: Do I need to keep the Steam program on my computer to use YNAB? A: While you do need the Steam program to download YNAB, you do not need it to continue to use YNAB, so you can simply uninstall Steam after you install YNAB with no adverse effects. Q: What about my activation key? A: If you purchase YNAB through Steam you can find your regular YNAB application key in the YNAB program. Once YNAB is loaded, go to the Help menu, and then click on "About YNAB 4". A window will pop up with a button that says "Copy Application Key to Clipboard." If you like, you can then download the YNAB app off of the YNAB website and use this key to activate YNAB (though as I stated YNAB will work fine without Steam).

Will this work if I already downloaded it and am using the free trial? I'd love to get it for $15 but don't want to lose all the work I already put into my budget.

Yes, you can use the steam activation key to activate the trial you are already using and not skip a beat

ARGH!

I just bought it off Steam 2 days ago 'on sale' for $44.99.
I hate when things like this happen :furious:

Is this process fairly simple and safe? I'm a little hesitant I think because I haven't heard of steam before and because my computer is a little slow. I'm afraid to download more than I need and then end up killing it.

you can remove Steam as soon as you get your activation key. It is safe, I've been using Steam for almost a decade. It's very well-known among computer video game players. It is a little bit of a hassle, but I consider the hassle well worth the $45.

Hi everyone! Jumping on board for 2015. While we have been very fortunate to make all our monthly payments above the minimums, I'm tired of just swimming along. We are on target to pay off our mortgage by 2018 thanks to the double payments we've been making for the last 5 yrs. But now I want to get serious on knocking out other debt (CC, student loans for DD, and medical bills from DH heart surgery) by July 2017. Debt free before DH retires is the goal!

For some reason (head in sand), CC debt has always been the least of my concerns. :sad2: Thankfully, we have continued to put money away in savings and have it to cover vacations and emergencies...so no new debt. But 2015 is here and it's time to alter our approach to spending and paying down debt!

I've read through this thread and the 2014 thread and really like the ideas everyone has posted. Thanks for the inspiration!!

DH and I have decided to focus only on car payments and CC debt this year. The student loan debt is a tough mountain, but it's unfortunately only growing as DH is starting work on his AA degree in January and I was just accepted into an Ed.D. program in July. :scared1:

I'm scared to think of what loan debt will look like by graduation, but.... if we tackle the other loans and that's all we have... that's progress.

I really need to dump some debt in 2015. 2014 was off to a good start but we took several big hits that we weren't expecting and it really derailed a lot of our plans.

Not included in our 2014 budget was:
- having to spend almost $3,000 on surgery, travel, and vet bills for our cat to fix an ulcer on his eye that our regular vet screwed up and misdiagnosed. 6 months after that, we spent another $1,000 on the cat to find out he had cancer in his pancreas and had to put him to sleep. So, $4K on a cat that we don't even have anymore :(

- my husband ended up needing his wisdom teeth pulled after all these years plus he needed an MRI on his chest. Those cost us several thousand dollars we weren't expecting this year.

- i got pregnant, which I wasn't expecting and so we've spent right much money getting ready for baby, setting up nursery, etc.

- my car transmission went out and I had to get that replaced.

- we added a teenage driver to our insurance. (We knew this was coming, but it ended up costing a little more than I expected it to). Now, he has already had an accident so we are paying for unexpected car repairs.

It just seemed like it was hit after hit after hit in 2014. Hard to save money and pay off debt when each month it seemed liked something big happened.

Of course we will have extra baby expenses in 2015, but I'm hoping that we don't take so many hits in 2015 and can actually work towards paying down debt and replenishing our savings. We need a good year and I need to figure out where to start!

Wow, this is a lot to get dumped on a family. I can give you one little tip that might help. We also added a teen driver and even though he doesn't have a car for himself, just having a young driver in the house added a lot to the insurance. We had AAA at the time so we shopped around and switched to GEICO. They offer a defensive driving course that offers a small discount on the premium for the next 3 years. I was going to get it for ds17 but the Geico agent said it would also help if dh & I take it since we're the main drivers on the policy. The DD course was only $20 through Geico but AAA had it for around $30. If you're not affiliated with either just google accredited courses in your state. The google search results seem geared toward drivers who have had suspended licenses or DUI but really anyone can take it.
I took it online and it really wasn't bad and knocks about $40/year off. I figured if all 3 of us do it, it still saves more than it costs and since the discount applies for 3 years.
Dh's work has offered it a few times to their drivers with a CDL to save $ too but his certificate has expired and they haven't offered it lately.

Congrats on the new baby!

I am going to try to follow this thread this year. I have seen the debt dumpers thread here for years, but I'm not one to do all those "perk" programs. But I need support to pay down those debts, and even more importantly not incur new ones. We just traded hubby's car for a new one this week and although the insurance and car payments will be the same, we've essentially reset the payoff clock to five years again. And we're trying to pay off the last of our credit cards (sending double the minimum), a home improvement loan (should be gone by May), another home improvement credit card loan (fixed seven year payoff) and our mortgage. All gotta be done in 7 years for DH's retirement.

So stop me from adding to my debt. But how do you dump debt AND go to Disney?!

Thanks!

And yes, it was a lot in one year and there is really more that I could add to the list, but I think that it got the point across that 2014 was a little rough for us financially! Thanks for the idea on the defensive driving. Any little bit of savings helps, plus it never hurts for us adults to brush up on our skills a little bit!

But how do you dump debt AND go to Disney?!

I just don't dump debt as quickly as I could. I focus on cutting expenses, monitoring my discretionary, and setting a portion of my savings earmarked for Disney so I don't incur additional debt when I vacation, cause I can pay cash.

Not always successful in my plans, mostly due to my SO not being with the program.
