Debt Dumpers - 2015

I'm so excited!!! I paid off my car!!!!!! That's $300 a month that can go towards debt/savings. I'm going to pay more bills tonight and tomorrow so I'll kill a couple of small credit cards.

In other good news my salary increase wasn't the greatest BUT my quarterly bonus was doubled! This is huge...it's all based upon sales so if we reach our goals each month (which is VERY possible) I'll be able to be non-student-loan-debt free by July! This is like 4 months earlier than I thought!

I just love all the encouragement and ideas on this thread. Great job everyone! Keep it up!!!

Congratulations! That is quite and accomplishment!

After reading your post, I'm going follow along too. I know I'm late to the party with this thread starting in Dec 2014, but hopefully I can learn and contribute.

This is why we are trying to sell the home as is. But we were countered offer to look into the furnace which we did because it wasn't working, but now they want us to update the electrical, which is going to cost us $8,000.

We lowered the price of our home $15,000, now minus another $10,000. I want to break our contract with the buyers, we know these repairs need to be done, but it is at our expense and the buyers are getting a huge bargain house now.

That sounds like a tough spot you are in OhMari with your house. What do you think you are going to do? Wow! the amount of that electrical bill must be overwhelming! I know it would be for me.

Soon I will have another 2k to apply to my cc debt. This is just happiness come full circle. I gave DD 2k from savings in October towards her Student Loan interest so it wouldn't capitalize into her monthly payment before the first one was due. I wasn't expecting the money back. Two weeks ago she told me to pull the money from her account, but when I went to the bank she didn't have enough so I planned to wait. (Hope she has enough to make her car payment) Friday night she came home for a visit and I mentioned the account balance. She immediately apologized saying she took my earlier advice and opened a savings account for direct deposit so it isn't tied to her debit card in case of theft. Her other account has 7k saved up. She wants me to help her open the Roth IRA account I suggested to her in December.

I'm so Happy! Not just for getting the 2k back, but knowing that she actually listens and takes my advice. She also started paying extra each month towards her car and student loans. (She currently lives rent free with my sister about 50 miles away while working as an RN, so this arrangement helps her financially. Sister refuses to accept rent from DD or allow me to pay her for letting DD live there. She is debt free herself and wants my DD to focus on paying off her loans too. Very fortunate and blessed to have such a wonderful sibling looking after my girl.)

Well I just filed our taxes. We'll be getting a good refund from state & federal. Some will be set aside for ds18's upcoming college expenses before financial aid/student loans kick in, deposits, dorm supplies etc.
Also we discovered last summer we have termites. Luckily no damage to our home but we could see them when they swarm and just happened to be calling the exterminator for ants. So as much as I'd like to put that $1200 toward bills, we can't just let our house fall apart. Along that line, our attic stairs pull down into the hallway and the springs are bent so bad it's hard to get it to swing back up. It's even hard to climb the stairs because the metal arms that holds the springs are bent in toward each other so there's hardly space to fit between them without the metal catching on our clothes. It's getting to the point it looks dangerous. Luckily they're only around $300 at Home Depot or Amazon and dh is handy enough to install them himself.

So when all is done we'll still have $1186 to put toward debt. Normally that's around the amount we'd spend on ds14"s overnight camp but his grades haven't been too hot lately and we told him up front he has to pull them up a lot to be able to attend camp. Maybe I'll hold it aside til April or May and if his grades aren't significantly improved I'll put it on whatever bill I'm paying down at the time.

Hi ladies and gents! I need some help.

I need to make some decisions but I just can't. I'm torn.

I have paid off my car, 3 credit cards and will have my furniture paid off by the end of the month. That's $400 in monthly payments. As of March I've got 4 other cards to pay off plus my student loans and monthly bills. I can do one of two things. I can be debt free (except student loans) by July 31 or I can take a trip to Disney or Universal for my birthday with a friend from work. We'd split the room and it would just be me and DS12 that I have to pay for so the trip would cost under $3k no matter what, closer to $2500. It would be a 5 day trip over the weekend of my birthday.

I know the responsible thing to do is decline the offer and pay off my bills and live frugally. I've been through a lot the last year. I Have already paid for a room at kalahari for DS spring break to try to get him to have an episode so we can get some answers on his health so this could throw a wrench into plans if he has one and if we take the trip.

Thoughts?

Personally, I would take the trip. Yes, paying the debt off is the prudent thing but just like trying to lose weight, if you "fast" it's harder to stay with it for the long haul than if you give yourself a treat now & then. We're not robots nor the Energizer bunny. I guess it depends on how badly you feel like you need a break and how many weeks does this trip set you back on becoming debt free. If it will take another year then I'd say no don't do it. If it's a matter of 8 or 10 weeks, I'd go for it. You can always pack a lot of food and snacks to go low budget and avoid expensive table service meals. Maybe pack a box of cereal and some instant oatmeal for a cheap breakfast in the room. Do you plan to drive or fly? If you're flying is it possible to shorten the trip a little? We have done 3 night getaways to Universal that was plenty of time to do both parks and have a day to chill out by the pool.
I haven't bought Uni tickets in a long while but last time we went, a 2 day ticket to both parks was far cheaper than 2 days at WDW.

Of course you do realize this is like asking the group at AA if you should have a drink. :drinking:
Half will say, Don't do it. The other half will say, Heck yeah!

I would calculate how much extra you would be out in interest between now and when you'd pay it off if you went on the trip and see if that, added to the cost of your trip, is still worth it in your mind. :) If there is a question that your son may have an episode and a wrench could be thrown into the plans in addition to putting off getting out of debt when you are soooo close, I personally would get out of debt first. But thats just me, and would certainly make up for a crummy year IMO! :)

Yay! I just set up a $600 payment on our Discover that has a $1680 balance, so we will owe a little bit over $1000, and am on track to pay it off in April! :) So happy for this. We have other cards to pay on as I've said in an earlier post, but I'm looking at this debt one bill at a time, to make it seem more manageable and have small successes. We will be a little off track because we had a trip planned for our 24th in April, and we have to pay taxes this year, and our daughter is getting married in July, and I'm off for a month with no pay during that month. But nonetheless, I am looking forward to a great spring & summer, and continued debt pay off! If all goes well, our next cc will be paid off by December, but I would be happy even if it happens in early 2016. Baby Steps!! Keep on Swimming!! :disrocks:
