Debate: Vice President Hillary ?

You were lucky enough to be exposed to Hughes in high school?

I didn't get the chance until I elected to take an African-American Lit course in college.

Here's another great poem by Hughes:

I, Too (1925)

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

Langston Hughes

In AP English in my senior year, I did my term paper on Kurt Vonnegut, while a friend of mine did his on Hughes...He kept after me to read it (I'm not a big fan of poetry, normally), and when I finally did I was very impressed.

Did Mr. Hughes write this line or did he not?

Marx Communist Lenin Peasant Stalin Worker ME.

Did he ever disavow this position in any of his subsequent writings? If he did, I cannot find it anywhere.

I'm not saying that his beliefs may not have changed, but I have not found any evidence to support it.

You can deny, spin and "please!" all you want, but the fact remains of what he wrote with his own hands. He equated himself to Marx, Lenin, Stalin and communism. And Sen. Kerry wants to quote from this fellow.

The truth is out there for all to see. Welcome to the world of the extreme left!

And another concern would be the "swing vote."

Would Senator Clinton attract or repel Independents and voters of other parties?

She'd attract them enough to be a credible threat IMO. Strongly pro-choice, strong on terrorism, no big ties to the extreme right or left.

If she runs in 2008 maybe the Republicans will match her with Condoleezza.

Very scary...

Well, at this point the men have botched things up so badly we couldn't do any worse.

So what would we have to lose?:D

Excuse me....no one is denying or disavowing anything except the incredibly ludicrous statement you made
And Sen. Kerry has decided to adopt this as his campaign slogan. I do hope his campaign team does a little more research before committing more to this slogan. Or maybe they already have and this is the vision they have for America.
somehow trying to paint Kerry as a Communist Marxist Leninist because he quoted one line from a different poem

Because he did this in one poem, means it must be applied to all subsequent writings, whether related to the first one or not?

So basically, I am to be held to everything I ever say, and be denied the right to change my mind, or even the right to say something unrelated without having it connected to everything I have ever said in history amen?

Or better yet, because I like one poem someone wrote, I automatically have to adopt their principles?

btw: hi, Eeyore1954! We haven't disagreed since the demise of the DB. How ya doin'?

I think Steve (and others) consider it good strategery. :teeth:

I have not been able to find anything indicating Mr. Hughes disavowed these beliefs before he passed from this life. So I am left with the conclusion that this represents his life-long beliefs. I'm not saying he didn't change his mind; if he did, I can't find evidence of it, but I am willing to sit corrected.

I am not saying that Sen. Kerry adopted Mr. Hughes beliefs because of one line from one poem. I just find it interesting that he adopted a line from Mr. Hughes, who appears to have some interesting political beliefs. There are myriad poems available for the Kerry campaign to latch onto, some which are probably more stirring than Mr. Hughes' work. It's just intriguing that they chose something from this particular individual.

Maybe it just shows a poor vetting process.

Hiya, yourself, Mal! Long time, no disagrees!! Wow, I've missed the interaction and I really miss the DB.

I'm doing well, spunky and full of sarcasm and venom as before! :o  Glad to see you here again. While we may not have always agreed, I do enjoy reading what you write. You are challenging, thoughtful and witty!

Hey, how 'bout a date? (Just don't tell my DW!! :o )

I am blushing from the compliments!!

You don't tell my SO, I won't tell your DW!;) :p Sounds like a plan!

Far left or far right frightens me. I am pretty much a middle of the road type voter. Although I must admit I have leaned right ever since Bill Clinton.

That said, I believe Hilary may help John Kerry get elected.
I also think she is ruthless and power hungry and I would be very wary if I were John Kerry. I also believe she would prefer to sit this one out and see John Kerry lose this election. That would increase her option to run for President in 2008.

After all, the way I see it, she has already been the unofficial vice president - been there - done that. She wants more.

Hmmm... And you would pick a VP based only on their geographical location? Good strategy! ;)

It's no secret that presidential hopefuls tend to focus their resources where they will have the most impact. Does that mean Kerry will not campaign in the South? Judging by the last couple of months I don't think so. Keep up with current events much?

And, I'd rather have to "write-off" the South rather than CA and NY. :teeth:

Is Kerry still campainging? I haven't heard much out of him, recently. What with all the Bill Clinton book tours and what not.

I'm just going on what Kerry said in the debates. The Dems didn't need to win the South. Guess he's changed his mind on that, too if what you say is accurate.

As for picking a VP candidate based on their location...read history much? Worked for Kennedy. Worked for Clinton. My point was, you pick a candidate to help overcome your weaknesses, both in policy and in vote getting. You look to see where your weaknesses are. But, like I said, since Kerry thinks he doesn't need the South, he wouldn't likely be picking Edwards for that reason.

And since when is NY and CA in play? Wow! If the Dems are worried about NY and CA then Kerry is in worse shape than I could ever have imagined.

As a Democrat, I say PLEASE NO!

I hold her responsible for the Bush presidency. Follow me: Bill Clinton puts Hillary in charge of coming up with a health care plan, which was a fiasco. Give me a break - although she is very capable, she was the First Lady and was not elected or appointed to anything. This gives rise to the great Republican victories of 1994. In Texas we had a very well liked Democratic Governor, Ann Richards, running against a totally inexperienced baseball team owner named George W. Bush. Amazingly, Bush was swept into office in the backlash against Hillary and her health plan. So that gives Bush his "political experience" and an office from which to run for President, and the rest is history.

I'm not a fan of Hillary (in case you can't tell.)

I'm a huge fan of Hillary. I'm not for her running on the ticket
this year because there are lots of people who feel like you do.
And because of the swing vote. We need a VP on the ticket
who makes the ticket more palatable to the swing. My mother
is one republican who can not vote for George Bush but when
we took Kerry as our candidate, she saw Kerry as the exact opposite of Bush and just as bad. She hates Cheney, sees him
as a big pushy arrogant businessman(especially after his explosion on the Senate floor the other day) and if we can tone
our ticket down a bit, Mom just might close her eyes and push
the Kerry button. I suspect there are many of her out there-
I'd love to have their support and Hillary just doesn't bring it.

What about Al Gore, maybe he'd like to be VP again and he seems to be getting a lot of face time being angry at Bush

Yes. I'm quite sure that geography was the only factor considered! You too are full of great strategery! Ever think of applying for a postion with the w campaign? You're a shoo-in, I'm sure!

Well, they're only "in play" if you're a republican. :teeth:
