DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

Good Morning, running late, but didnt want to get too behind on the thread! :rotfl:

Kate, your post reminded me of when my dad "challenged" me - it was a HUGE motivator!! You can do it!!

DWLZ - its a great site, loads of information FREE!!

egg white omlettes - more and more breakfast (well all places!) are offering healthier alternatives, ask about grapefruit too!!

Discovery Challenge - I thought about adding this, also after the free Bally membership, you can purchase a lifetime off of ebay - there are some specifics to look for, but its a great deal!!

Sorry I dont recognize anyone by name (but JuliaNicksmom) Just trying...

since I overslept I went back to my usual breakfast - 1tBl of peanut butter on toast!! its the evenings I've found that are my HUGE downfall!! :faint:

Here's the training schedule for the next 4 weeks:

Day 1
walk 40 minutes
Day 2
rset
Day 3
walk 30 minutes
Day 4
rest
Day 5
walk 30 mins
Day 6
rest
Day 7
walk 30
Day 8
rest
Day 9
walk 45 minutes
Day 10
rest
Day 11
walk 15 mins
Day 12
rest
Day 13
30 mins
Day 14
rest

Starting now - we start walking by miles. It may seem like your going backwards, because chances are you will be walking for less time now, but see what you can do about timing your miles- how long does it take the first time you walk a mile? Is there a decrease in time as you continue to walk miles instead of minutes?? Thta's good! You're getting faster! Please everyone- I want you to remember this is a REAL beginners, somebody that out of shape plan! Don't get frustrated with the speed of the plan. If you are getting frustrated because it seems too slow- go get John Bingham's book about marathon training. HE has a great plan in their if you feel the need to be a little faster! We'll probably be using that plan starting in September anyway as we will be coming closer and need a little more intense training the last 3 months. Here are the next 2 weeks:

Day 15
Walk 1 mile
Day 16
rest
Day 16
walk 2 miles
Day 17
rest
Day 18
walk 1 mile
Day 19
rest
Day 20
walk 2 miles
Day 21
rest
Day 22
walk 1 mile
Day 23
rest
*Day 24- WALK 3 MILES!!! Shift your walking schedule so that this day becomes either a Sat. or Sunday. This is the beginning of our long walk on a weekend day. Then follow so the next day falls on a Monday- Once you've made the shift you won't have to do it again (I think!)
Day 25
rest
Day 26
walk 2 miles
Day 27
rest
Day 28
walk 2 miles
Day 29
rest
*Day 30
walk 3 miles

Keep track of your times- Put them up on a chart so you can see your improvement! Also- as we go on there will be some pretty long walks, the * days are your long walk days. They should fall on a Saturday or Sunday, If for some reason you can't walk on a particular day- no problems , just make it up during the week! Just try to avoid doing it the day after your long walk. Your body needs the rest.

Hey all

well I got myself into a big old mess today :rotfl:

I was telling my dad who HATES WDW that I was planning on doing the 1/2 marathon walking

he sees no reason why I can't do it running and threw out the challenge - we will train togehter (he already runs) and if I keep with him running a 10 minute mile pace for the first four miles - he will pay for my ticket to the marathon but if I don't - I have to pay for his

so he is going to WDW and my kids and nieces and nephew now know that I hold the key to their greatest wish - Papa at WDW

so I guess the stakes are upped a bit now!!! :rotfl2:

I believe in you, Kate! I know you can do it! A free ticket to WDW is a powerful motivator! I'm rooting for you!

I think it is a pretty good motivator too!!!!!!

I am very proud of myself - I lost 4.5 pounds this week!!! I have been watching what I eat - but not so good on the water and exercise - so once we are all feeling 100% around here and I can reasonably leave my kids to go workout - I will be very excited - I have been trying to do my 10 minutes of exercise - which was a little hard on the days that Nick never got out of my lap

Alrighty now, I'm caught up so here's my update...

I have found the #1 problem area for me...Saturdays! I am really going to have to plan ahead for Saturdays it looks like. On Saturdays, Terra and I usually leave the house around 9 or 10. On a good day, we are home by 6, but often it is closer to 8 or 9. Saturdays are our big "go do something fun day" since I work during the week and we have to go do laundry and grocery shop on Sundays.

Yesterday we went to the mall and Chuck E Cheese. Despite a pretty good week of healthy eating, yesterday I ate a Mrs. Fields cookie w/ icing, 4 pieces of CEC pizza, 2 Target cookies and had a large Dr Pepper. Somehow, I don't think the walking around the mall, from the mall to CEC and back again combated that. On top of that I left without my water bottle and never thought to stop and buy some.

Now while I'm trying not to beat myself up too much over yesteday, I do realize that this is going to be an ongoing occurance if I don't plan ahead. Most Saturdays are spent eating out somewhere and not usually somewhere with many healthier options. I can't decide if I should be planning what to take with us or plan to eat places that offer healthier fare.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for healthier breakfast options when eating out. On Sunday's Terra and I always go get breakfast while we're doing laundry. In order to keep her from losing it on me, we go to breakfast while the clothes are in the dryer...this helps keep her sane enough to hang out at the laundry mat for the rest of the process. I had been eating Eggs Benedict every morning, but know that's not good for me.

Eggs are good as long as you watch what you put on them. Since my surgery, when we go out to breakfast, I usually order scrambled eggs with salsa on the side, or over medium eggs with sausage or bacon. Also, don't be afraid to leave food on your plate. That's been the hardest thing for me when we go out to eat. Because I can't eat a lot, I feel guilty about leaving food on my plate. Not to mention that all my growing up years I was told to clean my plate (by the way, my dr. says that's the worst thing we can say to our children). Now, I order a to go box right at the beginning of the meal. I cut away what I know I can eat, and box up the rest. Then I have breakfast (or lunch or dinner) for several more days. Or if I'm feeling nice, DH has a nice meal later on.

For your Saturdays out, choose a place that has a salad bar, or offers healthier options. Even McDonald's has salads that are not too bad. Right now, I think we're all so new to trying to eat healthier, that we have to keep reminding ourselves.

Good luck and remember: baby steps. Just start over right where you are. We can all do this!

Kate -- that is fabulous -- WAY TO GO! You deserve a pat on the back! I did well until the weekend, then Jake's birthday cake derailed me! I didn't get a piece at the party, but kept thinking about it and gave in. That as well as a bad choice at dinner last night have me starting off on the wrong foot this week. But, today is a new day and I'm right back to counting my points and brought my gym back to work and will be going straight there after work. (It is a fitness facility at one of the large hospitals in Dallas, and they have retired nurses watch the kids. You pay $3 an hour, per child, I think, and my kids love to go because there are fun toys there, as well as being able to watch videos.)

Glynis -- I have the same issue! My parents always told us to eat everything on our plate. That is one thing I've never told my kids, and never plan to tell them. WW also says to ask for a to go box when you first get your food and to put everything over a serving size in the box to take home. Great advice to pass along! Thanks for reminding us!

4.5 pounds! That's great! My weight loss seems to be slowing down. I mentioned it to my dr. and he is not concerned. He said to up my water consumption, and to really pay attention to how my clothes are fitting. He said that since I'm really kicking up my exercising, I'm building up muscle mass, but still losing inches. So, that's what I'm paying attention to. I feel so much better now than I did even 2 weeks ago. It helps so much to have support from my "family". You know, I think I might have to stop putting that in quotes. You guys are becoming as important to me as my "real" family.

By the way, I got an email from my Dad yesterday that had me in tears! He actually told me how proud he is of me for being proactive in taking care of my health. He is proud of me for attempting the half marathon, and will support me any way he can! This is huge! He has never mentioned anything about how he feels about my surgery, etc., so to have this from him means the world to me! I printed it out and taped a copy to my mirror, above my scale, and on my treadmill. It's amazing what his affirmation has done for my self-esteem!

Kate, Way to go for the first week! I know it must be really hard to find the time to exercise when you have little kids, because even without them I still seem to have plenty of excuses. But this week I have been following Karebear's training plan, and it hasn't been too hard at all. I seem to do better with a specific goal in mind and a plan to follow. I am actually down 5 pounds this week too, by counting my weight watchers points and exercising. Doesn't it feel great already?

Keep up the good work. :cheer2: Yeah for all the hard work and for committing to do the 1/2 marathon!

Thanks-

I wanted to tell you and my sister Nancy - that you are the one who sent me the AAA parking pass - my whole family used it during our trip - we were there for a two week period - she had posted in the other thread how nice it was and since we are all working toward the marathon together - I wanted her to know how sweet you were to send it!!!

the biggest excuse I have is the cold weather - if it weren't cold - I could pop outside and walk when my DH is home but I am a wimp! Maybe I should practice in the cold since it seems likely we will be walking/running in the cold next year!!!

Both of my kids will be in preschool next year - so I will have two hours a day to train - that will be huge for me!!!! As I get into what I believe will be the heavy training time - I will have ample time to train!!

Just wanted to check in before I'm off to work.
Kate How the heck did you swing that with your dad?!?!? YIPPPPEEEE! Sounds like you have some great support from the fam! I'm very excited for you. And I KNWO you cna do this- we'll make sure. And CONGRTAS on the 4.5 weight loss- that's PHENOMONAL!!! WTG!!!

ANyone else out there have a dad that would do that for me???? ;)

It seems to be the week of dads doesn't it. How nice for you Glynis that your dad sent you that email. Make sure you print that up and save it. Read it when yopu get down- it will be a good motivator for you!

It's times like this when I miss my dad the most. But, I can't talk about that now.... or I'll cry.

Anyway- did anyone check out the Marathon training thread on the WISH board?

I am a horrible wimp about the cold too. Also, if it is snowy or icy it is just too difficult to walk outside. But actually we have had an unusual # of days of weather above freezing and there is currently no snow on the ground, so for a little while I don't have that excuse. I can walk on the treadmill for a mile or 2, but after that it is just way too boring, so I am hoping that when I get up to walking more than that it will be nice outside.

You're welcome for the parking pass.

Ellen

You are all doing so well :cool1:

I'm thinking about it. I have TONS of horrible before pics, but haven't taken any pictures lately. I need to get DH to take some of me and then figure out how to post them. I may actually have to figure out how to use the photobucket account I signed up for but have never used.

Well, after DH and I discussed it for a little while, I checked on the room situation. There are no on-site rooms left, and the website suggested the Sheraton and Marriott for BIG $$$ a night. I'm hoping we can snag a cancellation.

We're still keeping our fingers crossed that DFIL (retiring this summer) will be able to watch our kids at our house when we go to DL.

Between the scarcity of rooms and the HUGE favor we're asking DFIL for, I don't know that we can plan this for this year. :sad1: But I'll be sure to keep you posted if things change.

Kate, good luck with meeting your 10-minute mile goal! That would be fabulous!

If it comes down to hotels, don't limit yourself to the "recommended" choices. There are so many good hotels within blocks of the parks at DL. If you find things in your price range, let me know what they are and I can tell you if it might be a good place. We used to live 10 minutes away and my best friend lives 5 blocks from the parks.
