DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

You will lose your money if you register and don't compete. However, I believe they will also hold your money for registration for the marathon the next year if you register this year and decide not to go.
You can probably wait until the end of February, beginning of MArch to register- but to tell you the truth Kate, now that they've split the hlaf marathon from the full ( 2 different days) things seem to have changed. You may w ant to register asap??? I think I'll take my chances though and register at the end of February.

Can you register online? If so, what is the website to do it?

I'm with Kate, putting money down, is a pretty sure way to get me to complete a goal. I hate losing money!

Yes you can register online! Here's the website that has the info and on Monday they should have everything set up to register for the half. This site also has info from this years marathon- so if you'd like, you can read what they have planned for this year and assume it will probably be the same or pretty close to it next year.

Great job!!! I wish my exercising was up to par. I am doing pretty well with eating. Last night I made pizza with whole wheat crust and only ate 2 medium size pieces instead of nearly half of it like last time. Tonight, we're having chicken so I think I'll make it into a salad with poached chicken and balsamic vinegrette. Water drinking is going well too. Yesterday, I had 4 - 24oz bottles and so far I'm on number 4 for today.

An exercise question...

So, everyday I walk from home to the train station (18 min) and then from the train station to work (10 minutes). On the way home, I do it again. Now, depending on the weather, sometimes I take the bus or subway for one or more of those legs. In other words, my daily commute entails either 18, 28, 36, 46, or 56 minutes of walking. Would you count this towards your daily exercising? I try to walk at a decent pace assuming there isn't ice to worry about. I haven't been counting it as I have to do it anyway, but maybe I should be.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Sure this counts as exercise, however to lose you have to do more than you are currently doing.

What do you wear when you walk? Are you in work clothes or workout clothes? Are you in the right kids of shoes for a steady pace? I think all this factors in. Maybe instead of wlaking again, you could put the right shoes on on the train and pick up the pace on the way home. (You probably donot want to sweat on the way to work.)

So last night I asked Dh to walk with me. We settled the kids down (12, 10 & 6) then headed out. He was happy to be out alone with me even if just for 30 minutes.

I told him for my birthday (March) I wanted his time. I told him about the half-marathon program and the marathon in Disney. and HE AGREED!

If in August we are still committed and on pace, we will make ressies.

It sounds like I might need to commit sooner, but I will cross that bridge then.

Thanks all!

Thanks Nancy. I wear work clothes (pants and buttone down shirt) and sneakers so I could definitely pick up the pace on the way home. Plus I carry a 10lb+ laptop backpack which should help too.

Nancy-
that's very exciting- it's so fun when husbands do this as well! Make I make a suggestion though? I would suggest you make your ressie for a WDW resort long before August if you want a room to stay. DVC people especially should reserve ASAP. For a regualr room, you can just put one nights deposit down and if you decide you can't do it when August rolls around, you can cancel and get your money back.

For anyone not staying on property, I would also suggest you reconsider that decision! Traffic on marathon morning is unbelievable! It will be very difficult for anyone to get into WDW and to the starting line without having to jump through hoops and leaving EXTRA early to get there on time. AS it is-when we did the half in 2005 we stayed at BCV's we were up and catching the bus by 3:30am!! And that, my friends, is not an unreasonable time to be catching a bus for the half! Now- some of this may have changed now that the half and full are on 2 different days. Maybe we should wait til this weekend is over and see how that aspect of things went from the WISHWalkers that went down to WDW and did the race. Even still.... it's a good thing to think about.

Great artical about Star Jones I think I might try to find her book. I need all the inspiration I can get. I have been pushing myself to exercise everynight I also got my husband to join in to. He wants to lose about 50lbs. It helps having him watching what he eats and exercising with me I dont get as tempted to cheat. I am so excited I did 30 min on my elliptical and 30 min on my treadmill today It really helps having this board it helps me stay focused and on track. Good job to the rest of you guys who have been staying on track.

Well, I had my follow up with my surgeon today and he is pleased with my progress. I told him that I want to do a half marathon next year and he got SO excited. He told me there should be no problems at all. So, I'm good to go! My DSIL was with me, and she wants to come as well. So, if DH backs out, I'll still have someone to fly with, etc. We will be training together, too.

I'm so excited. I think that both of us will be registering early (as in next week) so our DH's have some time to get used to the idea. So, now I need to really get with the training program. I figure the best thing right now is to build my stamina and get used to so much walking. If I can do that until March, then I can start working on the pacing. Karebear1, what do you think?

I'm so excited. Now I just have to figure out a budget, talk DH into saving our tax return for this trip, figure out where to stay, how long after the run to stay, where to eat after the marathon, etc. DH said it would be nice to celebrate my 40th birthday while we're there. So, hooray! I may have converted him! Now, if I can just get him there without too much stress. If I do all the work, figure out all the numbers and just present it to him, he'll be happy. We'll see. Any and all suggestions would be helpful!

Glynis, That is so awesome! Congratulations on the weight loss so far and on the green light from your doctor to train for the 1/2. My DH and I are going to try to train for the 1/2 marathon as well. I hope we can do it! I am so excited that there is something so great to motivate me.

That's exactly what I said. I need it to motivate me. Not to mention if I put out the money for registration I definitely WILL do it, because I can't stand to be out the money. I love the fact that so many of us are going to be doing this together. How cool it would be if we could get all the DDA's to do it. I know that's not possible, but a girl can wish, can't she? At least I know that those of you that can't make it will be cheering us on anyway!

Glynis! I just knew he would ok this for you! YEAH!!!!!

Stamina building is good! One thing my trainer always said to me was that your spped will naturally pick up on your own- so I wouldn't worry too much about speed. I was thinking today that people like John Bingham who do this for a living and sell books about training for marathons can train you in 12 weeks. That's just amazing to me! So- I think what I'm gonna do is train with my old trainers schedule until Sept. and then either pick up John's book and use what he says OR Join up with the Luekemia Society for training. They will train you for free if you walk under their name and raise funds. LISALOVESPOOH does her training this way. There are always TONS of this group at the marathon- and they really cheer each other on! Their training is supposed to be excellent as well!

If you're just starting with training and have never done this beofre, You should go to the WISH board and post under the thread for the 2007 marathon. I'm there as well. You always get toons of advice and experience from others as well. The more you know the better. Go to Borders and pick up Runners Magazine and start reading. When it comes right down to it- knowing the right shoes to wear NOW and the right clothes to wear, the good foods to eat.... all that stuff is essential to good preparation for a successful marathon. Besides.... if you're a scrapper... there should be ads for the 2007 Marathon/Half Marathon in there anytime now! ;)

I hope I'm not giving too much info for you guys. I don;t want you to think I think I know everything. I don't! I just know that I wanted to know everything anyone knew when I first started. If I'm saying too much.... just tell me! I know when to be quite! :)

That's great news, Glynis! I'm glad that your check up went so well. Happy training!!

Sorry I haven't been around the last couple of days. I kept getting the Server Down message, or the boards were down or my browser just wouldn't open it. I think that it is great that you are all training for the 1/2 marathon. I will not be joining you as it is not a good time to pull the kids from school. No vacations going on here for January so I'll have to pass. I will certainly be happy to give you all moral support.

Glynis, glad your appointment went well.

Deb
