DDA Chapter 3

Hey, Tom! Your Henderson's Wharf Inn in Baltimore was just named to Trip Advisor's Top 10 America's Hidden Gems!

ETA: Wilderness Lodge is #10 on their list of best resorts for a family.

The boards actually are running pretty well this morning! At least when compared with how they HAVE been running!
Well, I'm not exactly known for my patience! :rotfl: They do seem better now, though. Maybe it was my computer this morning.

Hi Beth!

You must have heard Elin yelling in your dreams, telling you where our new thread was.

:rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:
Maybe that was it! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Beth, it's so good to see you!!! We've missed having you around, but I know things get busy around there. Hope that the ball is nice! Sorry that I don't have any appetizer ideas for you.
Thanks to you and everyone else who welcomed me back!

I'm happy to see the boards running more quickly today :thumbsup2 yesterday was frustrating.
...
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
That sounds a little familiar to me. Laura is the one that does this to me. Matthew always does his homework on time without drama. Sometimes he leaves things until the last minute, but he can always pull off a good grade. More importantly, even when he procrastinates, I don't have to bear the brunt of it. He still goes off on his own and gets the work done. Laura on the other hand will complain, moan, and make my life miserable for several hours before even starting on the work. Often it can also be done very quickly and usually she pulls out a good grade, too, but the drama leading up to it is awful. She procrastinates a lot more often, too. As a matter of fact, today I mentioned to her that it was a good thing that she didn't have school all week (except for exams), because it would be almost impossible to get time for homework in this weekend. She said very matter of factly, "Oh, I have biology homework." She has been off all week except for two half days of exams, and SHE HAS NOT DONE THE BIO HOMEWORK! She knows what this weekend looks like for her. So, you aren't alone. Miles doesn't have much homework yet, but he is always very good about coming home and getting it done right away. I'll cross my fingers that he is more like Matthew than Laura when it comes to homework.

I read a little bit about strep and the rash that Colby had. Apparently he had scarlet fever. The doctor may have mentioned that, but there was a lot to absorb. We are over the worst of it as the raging rash that looked that the worst sunburn I have EVER seen has lightened up and doesn't seem to be so hot. I was apply aloe to his hiney about every hour to cool and sooth the area. Now unfortunately the area is completely peeling :sad2: He says that it itches and I bet it does. I really hope that he is completely over this my Monday.

I haven't worked in over a week with everything that has been going on. I was glad that I called them before the schedule was done and had them hold off on scheduling me until the end of the week. I will work tonight and it will be nice to get out of here :rolleyes1 I could use a little peace and quiet for a night. I don't work this weekend, but will go back to a normal schedule next week.
I hope that Colby feels all better soon! Enjoy your "peace and quiet".

Good for you, Mom! Kristin was the same kind of student. I always felt as if I was pushing or pulling her along in school. I guess she finally "got it" because her GPA in college is 3.72. And I can tell you that I never ask her about assignments anymore. :rotfl:
It's getting a little better with Laura, so I hope that she turns the corner like Kristin!

He's still young...these kids can change on a dime...I know quite a few tech school grads who are quite the success.

Christopher is the classic underachiever...his test scores are off the chart...but his laziness & always rushing to get done bites him in the butt. I am amazed that he still gets good grades :confused3 Now my girls on the other hand...I never have to even ask them about homework...they totally do it on their own. Men!! :)
See above...I have the opposite here. :rotfl:

so those going in Aug what are your schedules

I think that we are still going to head out West this summer, but we have been toying with a week at the beginning of August in WDW instead. I have to find out about the Fall sports schedule, but I think we need to be home by the middle of the month.

I need to run to the grocery store. I don't want to go there...

Beth

OMG! The hotel I stayed at when I went to Vegas is on fire!
I feel bad for the firemen!

Good Morning DDA,

I thought I'd post a design, just for old times sake, it's one of my older ones, but also one of my favorites.

I'm proud to day that even though it is still too high, my glucose level has come down quite a bit. DH is being very supportive and has agreed to eat the same meals as I do which is making it much easier, only problem is he doesn't need to lose anymore weight.
LOve that design Debbie! Glad your levels are already getting better!

Good morning DDA!

I have some good news this Friday morning--I got an email from disney with a pin code!! i never got one before, so i was pretty excited---not sure if ill be able to use it, but im definietly going to try!
I say August is looking good too!!!!

Today is our last day here. :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: I don't want it to be over.

Yesteday was Epcot all day, we arrived at 9:30 and left after Illuminations. We did a few rides in FW and then strolled around the WS. The girls did all of the KidCot stops and Emma completed her passport. We had dinner in Norway and did not like it one bit. First we arrived at 5pm to check in and the cast member tells me that we are late, 20 minutes late. Our ADR was for 4:40pm. Every piece of paper I have I had it written as 5:30. So I don't know what happend there. But we did get in so that was good. The food was fine but we were rushed. I had to take Molly to the restroom and by the time we got back our dinner was on the table. 10 minutes from the time we sat down at the table. The princesses rushed through the room. Our server wasn't so great either. He did not clear the table and with a 6 month old who likes to grab for anything in her eyesight, it did not make for a fun experience. And he did not refill our drinks either. The girls enjoyed it so that's all that matters.

Today we are off to the MK. We need to get to Frontierland and Adventureland. But just plan to ride rides all day and soak up the atmosphere. It'll at least be 2 years before we make it back. :sad1:

We are leaving Saturday morning and driving back home. We haven't decided if we are making it one shot or stopping yet. I guess we'll see how it goes.
Sorry Norway was a dissappointment to you. I had a few meals in Jan when I was suprised by the lack luster service.

Hope you have fun today! We usually end with MK too. In August we are taking an early flight home so that will be wierd not to go to a park.

I thought you & the girls were flying home???

Leighanna is sick. I don't think she will be going to school today. This will be the first day she missed since our trip to the World.

She tossed and turned all night. I took her temp late, and she had a fever, so I gave her some children's tylenol, and she seemed to be doing better.

She has been coughing and yesterday her nose started to run, so I knew something was brewing!

Hopefully a long weekend will make her feel better.

BRRRRR! It is freezing out today. I just let the dog out, and she ran right back in.

Is it Spring yet?
:wizard: Hope she's feeling better soon! Sorry she missed Library Day!

Good morning, DDA!
Hi! Sounds like you're as busy as ever!

I cannot stand the thought of not having a trip planned. Is anyone planning a trip between September 26-November 9, 2008? Those are the dates of the F&W Festival.

I would love to figure out how to get another trip in this spring, even for a long weekend, but I haven't found time to do that yet. Kristin's graduation is May 17, I have a 35th college reunion the weekend of May 30, and a Virginia Federation of Music Clubs state convention June 4-6. Somehow I need to find time in there to teach and hold recitals! ;)
Not yet.:rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Well, I'm doing better this morning. The congestion just seemed to come back hard last night. Of course, I'm doing better again and it seems Terra's finally progressed to the yuckiness of it all. I thought that she was going to get away with just a little coughing. She's been crabby since waking up this morning and when I asked how her troat felt she said, "kind of freaky." Uh, oh. She seems a little fevery too. Guess we're taking it easy today.
:wizard: Hope you're both feeling better!

So it seems my kiddo isn't the only one home from school sick....:wizard: that all kiddos feel better quick!!
:wizard: Hope Abi recovers quickly too!

I forgot to tell you all about my "wake-up" call.
The phone rang at 5:25 AM. Of course when DH is working if the phone rings I answer it because I am always worried that he has been in an accident. It was a RECORDING from the stupid school district informing me that schools are open today! Really? School is OPEN? You don't say!
Our call to cancel school last week was about 5:10am. They can do the auto calls by school (rather than the whole district). I would think they could calls the families who's child doesn't start til 8:35 later than 5:10.

Bernadette on your recent visit did you stay at PC? Did you notice if the toiletries had been changed to the H20 products? I read on another thread they were switching to these. I loved using these products at the Poly & it saved me from having to pack shampoo & conditioner.
Like others have said the H2O products at the values aren't the same as you get in the deluxe resorts.

I know that my throat hurt really bad the day I was at the worst. Plus, Terra usually just says "it's fine" when asked how things feel. It's all in reading the type of "fine" through other clues. For her to say something other than fine or okay was a big sign.
That sounds like Emma. I'll hear her tell Lizzy she isn't feeling well but if I ask her she'll say "I'm not telling you." She doesn't want me to try and give her any medicine.

So Nick really made me angry yesterday. He had many assignments that had been given to him on Monday or earlier that he had put off. I didn't know about any of them until about 6:30 last night when he started stressing. Mind you I started telling him to do homework as soon as he walked through the door at 3 PM  He had a few smaller assignments that he finished first then he announced that he had to make a map for social studies. It needed to show the "topography" of Canada along with all the Provinces and capitals. So we start Googling Canadian topography maps. That was not what he needed. On to Geographic maps...nope that didn't look familiar either. After blowing my top from asking him for the umteenth time what he actually was looking for and only getting the response. I need the map that is in the World Atlas at school with the different colors. Obviously he didn't bring the map home and we don't own a World Atlas and the maps that I pulleed up from their site didn't look right. I had him call a friend from class who was just planning to name the mountains and plains, but really didn't know what the teacher wanted either. By now Chris had been dragged into the situation and he and I were both raging mad. How can you not know what your assignment was. Why was it not written down especially since he had had it since Monday. I finally called the teacher who was not at all happy that I was calling her at home and could not fathum why this was a problem at 7:30 the night before it was due as he had had all week to do it. I explained that he had drawn the country, added the provinces, capitals and had saved the regions (as it turns out) for last and that he could not bring the atlas home. After she settled down it turned out that he had a map in his folder that had the regions identified:headache: Sure enough he had a study guide for another assignment that showed exactly the information that he needed. Oh yeah, I had shown him at least 20 other maps with the same information  So he finally got the map done around 8 PM and started to read the book that should have been finished on Wednesday. Did we know about this...of course not. I had even been on him Wednesday night to get extra homework done as Thursdays tend to have more homework. He insisted that he didn't have anything that he could do. So when I asked him last night why he didn't work on it on Wednesday he said that the dentist told him to take it easy. (Insert smilie with my head hitting the ceiling) Apparantly reading isn't taking it easy. By this point I was far too angry to be in the same room as him let alone help him. So he started reading. He was on page 60 of a 196 page book. An hour later he was on page 80. Apparently he reads about 20 pages per hour as at 10 PM he was on page 100. At that pace he should get the book read by 3 AM. He was already asking if he could just go to sleep. Um no...he would pull an all nighter if he had to as he put himself in that predicament. So Chris and I discuss punishment as it would be huge. No friends for the rest of the month, no video games for the rest of the month and loss of tv for one day for each hour he is late going to bed. I was feeling better as I added on consequences :rolleyes1 A hot bath and I had calmed down. I ended up reading the book to him from 10:15 to 12:30 when it was done. So this weekend he will write the entire book report and type it or I will cause him physical harm. He will also read another book to be ahead for the next report. Afterall he will have nothing better to do with his time.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
I think I'm in for it will a few nights like that. Both Lizzy and Joe are very slow about doing their homework.

I am so glad it's Friday (not that I have a particularly fun weekend planned, but this has felt like the longest 4-day work week ever)!
 It has been a long short week here too. Glad it is almost over!

I will work tonight and it will be nice to get out of here :rolleyes1 I could use a little peace and quiet for a night. I don't work this weekend, but will go back to a normal schedule next week.
Poor Colby! Have you tried an oatmeal bath? Aveeno makes some packages that you can put in the bath for kids.

While talking to "Chester" earlier this morning he told me an interesting fact about those pin codes: If you are traveling with someone who has a code and you are there on any one day of their stay, you are eligible to use their pin code. Is this new info to anyone else but me?
Really????? OH JEN or JENNIFER....I think August would be a really good idea for you guys. Maybe you could get the code applied to my reservation, and Elizabeth's, and Janet's and Anne Marie's.:thumbsup2

does anyone know an easy way to make word scrambles I am wanting to make a fun books for the plane ride
Have you found the links on www.themouseforless.com? They don't have word searches but they do have lots of other cute kid pages. You can also do a search for Disney coloring pages (or check over on the family board here on the dis for links). There are lots of downloadable pages out there.

Another think I did was make my own sudoku-I used a book as a guide for the puzzle but substituted the numbers for Disney stickers. Some of the kids sudoku puzzles are 4x4 so they are pretty easy.

Men!! :)
Sounds a bit like Lizzy-does really well on untimed standardized tests but is SOOOOOOO slow.

so those going in Aug what are your schedules
Do you mean day by day schedule? I haven't done that yet. Just have dinner on the 14th with Elizabeth & Janet and breakfast on the 15 or 16th with Elizabeth. No Color Coded Matrix of Fun even started yet. I think I'll have to go to 2 pages this year.

photopass lets you have 300 pics on your CD or can you do more?
They can fit about 300 pics on one CD but you can have unlimited number of pics-they just send you more than one CD. I had 5 CD's last August for the same price as if I had 1.

I'm not sure if I've shared this part of our trip yet, so if I have -- sorry!
I hadn't seen them before. Great pictures! DTD sounds scary.

UGH! The Epcot background music (concourse music, fountain music, etc) does it to me every time. It's on sorcerer radio, and I'm so freaking "home"sick! :rotfl:

Hi!!

Glad to see everyone in our new "home".

Daniel is still home sick. I went to get his school work from his school & he is working on that now. So far he has held down what he has eaten.

I am so ready for Disney World....I would love to do another DDA trip in the fall like last year but I don't think I'd be able to swing it.

Jen,
My dates are 8/18-8/29.

Marci,
Great pictures! We are trying BD in april for lunch. I LOVE cobb salad so I am looking forward to that. Does the grapefruit cake tastes like grapefruit? It looks nice but I don't like grapefruit.
Hope Daniel is on the mend now!

The grapefruit cake is a nice light yellow cake with multi layers. It has a citrus cream cheese filling between the layers. Not a real grapefruit taste to it. When I went in January with Joe mine was a bit dry.:sad1: Not as good as a few years ago but maybe it was just an off night. The service here was the best of the trip!

Hey, Tom! Your Henderson's Wharf Inn in Baltimore was just named to Trip Advisor's Top 10 America's Hidden Gems!

ETA: Wilderness Lodge is #10 on their list of best resorts for a family.
It was a really nice place to stay! Leighanna and I felt really welcomed there on our visit.

Looks like they have it under control. No one hurt or trapped so that is good news. Too bad...I like that hotel.

Elizabeth I never heard of schools calling with a recording about whether school is open or not. Glad we don't get those here!

We've never gotten one before! I don't know if it is because he is in middle school (they leave a message EVERY time he misses a class, which we always know about because WE pick him up!) or because of what happened last time. Dallas was the ONLY district in the entire city - the entire region - that didn't close. Now, the roads weren't bad, but ALL of the other districts closed. I kept DS home and they would have been in for a truckload of ugly if they hadn't excused the absence. There were district officials on TV arguing that the roads were fine and there was no need to close and students would be given unexcused absences. The backlash was incredible. The problem is there is a staggering % of kids on free breakfast & lunch. Those kids get picked up by the bus at dark o'clock so they can get to school for their free breakfast. If Dallas is canceling classes they have to do it before the first buses roll out, so for some families I guess 5:25 AM is reasonable. I am NOT one of those families! My alarm goes off at 6:15 and I HATE to be woken up by anything prior to that.

Wow, Deb, I am so sorry for the night you had. I'm afraid I would have been hopping mad, too.

Hopefully, Nick has learned a very valuable lesson from this (and will have plenty of time to ponder it over the next month)! I'm afraid I, too, would have loved just racking up the consequences for him. ;)

Lots of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: that today is much better for all of you!

Sounds familiar. I hope he learned his lesson, although I have to say DS keeps coming up with variations on how to make the top of my head blow off.:rolleyes1

Good for you, Mom! Kristin was the same kind of student. I always felt as if I was pushing or pulling her along in school. I guess she finally "got it" because her GPA in college is 3.72. And I can tell you that I never ask her about assignments anymore. :rotfl:

I hated middle and high school and never did a lick of homework. (Except Science Fair. ;) ) My college GPA is 4.0 because I didn't start until I was 23. And I paid for it myself.

Men!! :)

DS can ace any standardized test they plop in front of him, which has actually been a problem since it has landed him in classes that are hard enough to require more effort than he is willing to put in.

Deb - DH went to technical school for airplane mechanics. Now he has been in grocery retail/distribution for 20 years!:rotfl2: He never worked one day as an airplane mechanic.

so those going in Aug what are your schedules

You want my WHOLE schedule? Or just my schedule starting from Aug. 12? My matrix of fun is at home, so I'll have to post it later.
The bummer about those codes is that they don't start until August 10, and that is the day my 30% off Bounce Back starts. I wouldn't argue with 40% instead of 30%, but I need some sort of discount for those concierge dates (Aug. 1-4) and something better than 15% for Aug. 6-10. If AP rates are only going to be $50 off rack rate then it BARELY trumps the AAA rate. I think if I can get an AP discount from Aug. 1-10 we'll save $240 total.

photopass lets you have 300 pics on your CD or can you do more?

More. The 300 limit doesn't apply anymore.

UGH! The Epcot background music (concourse music, fountain music, etc) does it to me every time. It's on sorcerer radio, and I'm so freaking "home"sick! :rotfl:

Joe was just talking about that music last night. I swear he is going to be my fanatic!

Elin-have you seen the groundhog at Build a Bear? He's very cute! Couldn't help but think of you when I got the email!

I'm happy to see the boards running more quickly today :thumbsup2 yesterday was frustrating.

Elin-have you seen the groundhog at Build a Bear? He's very cute! Couldn't help but think of you when I got the email!

I got the e-mail, and I also saw the groundhog at BAB today at the mall. He's pretty cute! Don't need a groundhog, but he looks nice and cuddly.;)

Eddie Bauer has 30% off the clearance price. They had some nice sweatshirts.

I bought a pair of Merrell sandals at Macy's but I think they are going to be too tight. I had socks on when I slipped them on, but I don't think my socks are that thick. I am pretty sure they are going back. I found one of my FAVORITE bras (Wacoal) marked down to $21 so I snatched it up. Dillard's has a bunch of Wacoal bras on sale but they are weird styles & colors.

DS came out of his room this morning and his shirt looked rather small. It is a size 10 Talbots, so obviously the 2 size 10's that I bought Wednesday will need to go back. They didn't have any size 12's so that's the end of that!

I found some cute things for Princess at Gymboree, all of it on sale. We have decided that Gap clothes just don't fit her very well. When DS was little Gap clothes were cut HUGE. Maybe the boys' things are still that way. But the girl things are cut very skinny and tight, and Princess doesn't like that.

I'm not sure if I've shared this part of our trip yet, so if I have -- sorry! Can you tell it's slower at work today? Thank goodness, as it's been a heck of a four day week. (I so agree with you Lindsay!)

Love the pics, Marci! (Like your shirts, too ;) )

I must admit, your description of the crowds has me :scared: . At least you had a great resort to escape to!

Marci,
Great pictures! We are trying BD in april for lunch. I LOVE cobb salad so I am looking forward to that. Does the grapefruit cake tastes like grapefruit? It looks nice but I don't like grapefruit.

Poor Daniel. I hope he's able to get rid of the sickies soon - and keep the food down! :wizard: :wizard:

The grapefruit cake is yummy - and I hate grapefruit! :confused3

UGH! The Epcot background music (concourse music, fountain music, etc) does it to me every time. It's on sorcerer radio, and I'm so freaking "home"sick! :rotfl:

I need to see if I can go back to streaming park audio. My "old' firm had a ban on internet radio (as well as personal e-mail sites like g-mail, Hotmail, etc.), but since I can now access my Hotmail from here, I'm going to have to try Live365!

The kids came home with Report Cards. Both boys have all A's as letter grades, but each have an "S" in extras like health. I have no idea if that will keep them from high honors or not :confused3 I'm very happy with what they did. Nick only dropped in Health and maintained or did a bit better in all other classes. Hunter improved or maintained. I'm very proud of them :thumbsup2

Bernadette we have tried the oatmeal baths, but the don't seem to help with the peeling itch. I may need to exfoliate his hiney to get that skin off

It is nice to see that we have all adjusted well to our new home and no one is complaining.

Marci - I like your pics! I despise DTD crowds. I have pretty much decided I will NEVER go in World Of Disney again as long as I live. NOTHING in that store could possibly be worth fighting through those crowds.:scared:

Beth - WHOA! Did you say you are thinking about WDW in early August?! I missed that part earlier! I was just thinking how I am the only one arriving that early in the month! You should definitely plan to go to WDW. "Out west" isn't that important. You can do that another year. ;)

DH has some sort of thing going at work where he earns "tickets" to go into a prize drawing. So far he has 11 chances. He said one of the prizes is a big TV, but he doesn't know what else they are giving away or how many prizes they have all together. Maybe he will win something. I think they are going to draw the winners after the Super Bowl. I wish there were gift cards or money, but there aren't. There are no cash or "cash equivalent" prizes because there was some issue about income tax not being paid on gift cards. Silly.

Love the pics, Marci! (Like your shirts, too ;) )

I must admit, your description of the crowds has me :scared: . At least you had a great resort to escape to!

Poor Daniel. I hope he's able to get rid of the sickies soon - and keep the food down! :wizard: :wizard:

The grapefruit cake is yummy - and I hate grapefruit! :confused3

I need to see if I can go back to streaming park audio. My "old' firm had a ban on internet radio (as well as personal e-mail sites like g-mail, Hotmail, etc.), but since I can now access my Hotmail from here, I'm going to have to try Live365!

We have the opposite problem. I still can't get to personal email sites, but I can live without that! :rotfl:
