DDA Chapter 3

I'm happy to see the boards running more quickly today :thumbsup2 yesterday was frustrating.

So Nick really made me angry yesterday. He had many assignments that had been given to him on Monday or earlier that he had put off. I didn't know about any of them until about 6:30 last night when he started stressing. Mind you I started telling him to do homework as soon as he walked through the door at 3 PM  He had a few smaller assignments that he finished first then he announced that he had to make a map for social studies. It needed to show the "topography" of Canada along with all the Provinces and capitals. So we start Googling Canadian topography maps. That was not what he needed. On to Geographic maps...nope that didn't look familiar either. After blowing my top from asking him for the umteenth time what he actually was looking for and only getting the response. I need the map that is in the World Atlas at school with the different colors. Obviously he didn't bring the map home and we don't own a World Atlas and the maps that I pulleed up from their site didn't look right. I had him call a friend from class who was just planning to name the mountains and plains, but really didn't know what the teacher wanted either. By now Chris had been dragged into the situation and he and I were both raging mad. How can you not know what your assignment was. Why was it not written down especially since he had had it since Monday. I finally called the teacher who was not at all happy that I was calling her at home and could not fathum why this was a problem at 7:30 the night before it was due as he had had all week to do it. I explained that he had drawn the country, added the provinces, capitals and had saved the regions (as it turns out) for last and that he could not bring the atlas home. After she settled down it turned out that he had a map in his folder that had the regions identified:headache: Sure enough he had a study guide for another assignment that showed exactly the information that he needed. Oh yeah, I had shown him at least 20 other maps with the same information  So he finally got the map done around 8 PM and started to read the book that should have been finished on Wednesday. Did we know about this...of course not. I had even been on him Wednesday night to get extra homework done as Thursdays tend to have more homework. He insisted that he didn't have anything that he could do. So when I asked him last night why he didn't work on it on Wednesday he said that the dentist told him to take it easy. (Insert smilie with my head hitting the ceiling) Apparantly reading isn't taking it easy. By this point I was far too angry to be in the same room as him let alone help him. So he started reading. He was on page 60 of a 196 page book. An hour later he was on page 80. Apparently he reads about 20 pages per hour as at 10 PM he was on page 100. At that pace he should get the book read by 3 AM. He was already asking if he could just go to sleep. Um no...he would pull an all nighter if he had to as he put himself in that predicament. So Chris and I discuss punishment as it would be huge. No friends for the rest of the month, no video games for the rest of the month and loss of tv for one day for each hour he is late going to bed. I was feeling better as I added on consequences :rolleyes1 A hot bath and I had calmed down. I ended up reading the book to him from 10:15 to 12:30 when it was done. So this weekend he will write the entire book report and type it or I will cause him physical harm. He will also read another book to be ahead for the next report. Afterall he will have nothing better to do with his time.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Good for you, Mom! Kristin was the same kind of student. I always felt as if I was pushing or pulling her along in school. I guess she finally "got it" because her GPA in college is 3.72. And I can tell you that I never ask her about assignments anymore. :rotfl:

Deb - I hope you are feeling less stressed this morning. Thanks for sharing your story with us, as it helps to remind me that I am not alone in the homework battle, and mine is only a 2nd grader. I see how it can progress as they get older. I did have to chuckle at the 'taking it easy' part though. ;)

While talking to "Chester" earlier this morning he told me an interesting fact about those pin codes: If you are traveling with someone who has a code and you are there on any one day of their stay, you are eligible to use their pin code. Is this new info to anyone else but me?

Has anyone ever exchanged HiltonHonors Points or Marriott Rewards Points for airline miles? If so, do you have any idea if it actually takes 6 weeks for the transaction to finalize?

Oh, don't I know the feeling. Those things tend to happen on the nights when I'm the only homework helper home. Though it did happen to mom last night. All night long, math had never been mentioned in the homework list. Lo and behold, Mom heads to bed herself at 8:30 and finds Rachel sitting on it, doing math. Hmm, the one subject that ALWAYS needs help of some sort. So, mom was up until almost 10 instead of the 8:30 she really wanted.

does anyone know an easy way to make word scrambles I am wanting to make a fun books for the plane ride

Good Morning DDA,

I thought I'd post a design, just for old times sake, it's one of my older ones, but also one of my favorites.
I'm proud to day that even though it is still too high, my glucose level has come down quite a bit. DH is being very supportive and has agreed to eat the same meals as I do which is making it much easier, only problem is he doesn't need to lose anymore weight.

I hope you got a little sleep Deb, it's been a long time but I remember helping with many school projects.

Congratulations on getting the number a bit closer to in-range! Good luck to you and your DH.... it will be MUCH easier doing this together, and he certainly doesn't have to lose weight following the ADA recommendations - there are portions he can take to maintain (or even gain), and just end up eating a really healhty, balanced diet without losing weight.

Cute design, too! I hadn't seen that one.

Good morning DDA!

I have some good news this Friday morning--I got an email from disney with a pin code!! i never got one before, so i was pretty excited---not sure if ill be able to use it, but im definietly going to try!

How exciting! I hope you get to use it!

Today is our last day here. :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: I don't want it to be over.

Yesteday was Epcot all day, we arrived at 9:30 and left after Illuminations. We did a few rides in FW and then strolled around the WS. The girls did all of the KidCot stops and Emma completed her passport. We had dinner in Norway and did not like it one bit. First we arrived at 5pm to check in and the cast member tells me that we are late, 20 minutes late. Our ADR was for 4:40pm. Every piece of paper I have I had it written as 5:30. So I don't know what happend there. But we did get in so that was good. The food was fine but we were rushed. I had to take Molly to the restroom and by the time we got back our dinner was on the table. 10 minutes from the time we sat down at the table. The princesses rushed through the room. Our server wasn't so great either. He did not clear the table and with a 6 month old who likes to grab for anything in her eyesight, it did not make for a fun experience. And he did not refill our drinks either. The girls enjoyed it so that's all that matters.

Today we are off to the MK. We need to get to Frontierland and Adventureland. But just plan to ride rides all day and soak up the atmosphere. It'll at least be 2 years before we make it back. :sad1:

We are leaving Saturday morning and driving back home. We haven't decided if we are making it one shot or stopping yet. I guess we'll see how it goes.

I'm sorry your trip is coming to an end! :( Have a safe trip back!

Leighanna is sick. I don't think she will be going to school today. This will be the first day she missed since our trip to the World.

She tossed and turned all night. I took her temp late, and she had a fever, so I gave her some children's tylenol, and she seemed to be doing better.

She has been coughing and yesterday her nose started to run, so I knew something was brewing!

Hopefully a long weekend will make her feel better.

BRRRRR! It is freezing out today. I just let the dog out, and she ran right back in.

Is it Spring yet?

I hope Leighanna (and all the DDA kiddos!) gets to feeling better soon! It's freezing here, too.... so far I think we're up to about 9 degrees. Ugh!

Once you post on a thread, I believe you have subscribed to it.

Just as an addendum, this is usually true (it's the default) but it depends on how you have your settings in the user CP. You can change it the same place you can opt out of email reminders. :goodvibes:

Good morning, DDA! I had several strong dreams about you last night. It didn't seem like anything was wrong, but you were all trying to tell me something that I just wasn't getting. I figured that my mind must be telling me that I have been away much too long.

...

It's great to see you! You do stay super busy... pop in when you can!

Bernadette on your recent visit did you stay at PC? Did you notice if the toiletries had been changed to the H20 products? I read on another thread they were switching to these. I loved using these products at the Poly & it saved me from having to pack shampoo & conditioner.

Ditto! :thumbsup2

I love the H20 products! I have actually purchased the shampoo and conditioner (2 different kinds), and use them every day. My hair stylist was just commenting to me on Tuesday that my hair looks really healthy. :thumbsup2

I was just going to pipe in and suggest the same thing! I fell in love with them a couple years ago when they put them in the DVC resorts, and immediately found their website to purchase some. They are surprisingly inexpensive! (Compared to salon-type products anyway).

I hope you all are doing well! It feels so strange to have missed out on a whole day's worth of posts yesterday... please let me know what happened! :)

We are VERY slow at work today, which means I am getting a lot of stuff accomplished - and might get to sneak out a bit early. This is a very welcome idea, after a long week!

The boards were so slow yesterday that making a single post could take several minutes. Not too much was posted until the debate about what to do today which ended in this lovely new thread :goodvibes

I'm glad that we post stories about our kids here. It is so nice to know that we are not alone in these situations. I was venting to my mother last night and she just kept saying how lazy he is. I agree. She also pointed out that he would not be an A student if I wasn't pushing him every step of the way. I want him to do well and be successful. Right now he doesn't want to go to college, but I anticipate at some point he will want to and what he does now is the foundation for that. I guess I'll just keep pushing him. What ever happened to just wanting to make Mom happy :rotfl:

Hey... I just noticed that there is a "Science Fair Central" link from this site too! (It's on the left hand side...but just in case...)
http://school.discoveryeducation.com/sciencefaircentral/?pID=fair

thanks I noticed this too and was going to point it out as well. that site will make making the criss cross easier for Jeff. I am going to try to make some for Olivia using clipart pictures of disney characters

Ahhh...the homework battle. Jonathan used to make me crazy. Always waited until the last minute...and then pandemonium broke loose. I swear I used to wake up at night and wonder if this kid could would make it in this world....and then one day it all clicked...now he will graduate college in 3 years and then head off to graduate school. So from a completely disorganized mess...to a kid who's becoming a nuclear physicist.

I keep reminding myself of this...as Christopher is the next one engaging me in homework wars.

At this point I'll be happy if Nick graduates from High School and attends a Tech School. Hunter is usually my responsible one, but he has tested me a couple of times this year too. I know that he has a report and project due next Friday and I informed him last night that at least the project will be done by Sunday night or else. I am also pointing out to Colby that a time will come when he too will have homework and he had better NEVER act like his big brother :rotfl: Gotta start young

He's still young...these kids can change on a dime...I know quite a few tech school grads who are quite the success.

Christopher is the classic underachiever...his test scores are off the chart...but his laziness & always rushing to get done bites him in the butt. I am amazed that he still gets good grades :confused3 Now my girls on the other hand...I never have to even ask them about homework...they totally do it on their own. Men!! :)

sorry Kristine this made me laugh its so true

I'm not sure if I've shared this part of our trip yet, so if I have -- sorry! Can you tell it's slower at work today? Thank goodness, as it's been a heck of a four day week. (I so agree with you Lindsay!)

Johnson trip Day 2

We started off day 2 without big plans. Originally, Randy wasn't going to be able to fly with us so I had left this day open to relax at the resort, resort hop and/or downtown Disney. Since he was with us, the boys requested to go to the MK. We left early and went over for a few hours.

It was very crowded, but I do have TGM memorized, so we made it though all the big rides we wanted to do and then went back to the GF before heading over to then-MGM for lunch at the Brown Derby. While on our way out of the MK, we were stopped to be in the Family Fun parade. We did have a little time, so we stopped to do that. It was a lot of fun and brought back a lot of memories from marching band/feature twirler days.

We love the BD, and hadn't been able to get it for lunch or dinner on the day we were touring the park when I made my initial ADRs, but we were able to get an ADR for lunch (even booking it the night before) once we arrived. It didn't disappoint. Randy and I had Cobb salad, and then split a piece of the Grapefruit cake. (Even though I don't really like grapefruit, the cake is great!) We made it to MGM about 11:20, and the FPs fpr TOT and RNR were already for 8 p.m. We ended up leaving right after lunch to go back to the GF. The boys swam for a while, then we got ready to go to DTD. We went early because we knew it would be super crowded, and it was. We did a lot of shopping and had dinner at Puck Express. We all really enjoyed our food. As we were leaving, there was almost a fistfight for our parking place. One woman told us she had been driving around for over 45 minutes to find a place. When we left, a woman was standing in the spot we left with a baby stroller refusing to move until her husband pulled in to the space. We left there and headed to Goodings to get some supplies. We ended up back at the hotel just in time to see Wishes. :goodvibes

Hi!!

Glad to see everyone in our new "home".

Daniel is still home sick. I went to get his school work from his school & he is working on that now. So far he has held down what he has eaten.

I am so ready for Disney World....I would love to do another DDA trip in the fall like last year but I don't think I'd be able to swing it.

Jen,
My dates are 8/18-8/29.

Marci,
Great pictures! We are trying BD in april for lunch. I LOVE cobb salad so I am looking forward to that. Does the grapefruit cake tastes like grapefruit? It looks nice but I don't like grapefruit.
