on Sept 11, what can be expected pain wise? She had her fitting this week and we know what it will look like and such. But will it hurt her? I forgot to ask the orthodontist this. The space maintainter is because she had 2 molars pulled and they need to put the bar in to hold the space open for when her permanent teeth come in.

My DD14 says that her spacer hurt for one day, but tylenol helped. She said it wasn't any worse than any other adjustment to her braces, and that the pain intensified in the evening, was hard to sleep for one night, and was better in the morning.

DS just actually had his removed. He's 11, and he had it for almost 2 years, as he had to have a molar pulled, because he kept grinding the filling out of it. :) His did not hurt him at all, bugged him a little for the first few days until he got used to it. He actually said it hurt more getting it off.

He also could not chew on that side of his mouth for a day or two.

Not a biggie for us.

my DD10 has had a space maintainer on her lower teeth for about 3 years. it bothered her the first 2-3 days, but that was as bad as it got. what irritates me about it is that it won't stay put! they cement it in but every time i take her for her 6 month cleaning, it's loose and has to be recemented! DD has had SEVERAL teeth pulled because her lower teeth were too crowded and the space maintainer is keeping the back teeth out of the way so the front ones can all grow in straight. it's working, b/c the dentist told me last month that DD only has 2 more teeth to grow in before he can remove it! YAY! best of luck to your DD!

My DD(9) got a spacer as well. THere was some discomfort on the first couple of days but now she hardly knows its there.

Oh geez...I thought you sadi Space Mountainer, and I was interested to find out what that was!!

I had one when I was a kid! It hurt like crazy the first few days, but I was used to it quickly. I also had a mild speech impediment while I got used to it, but again, that was gone quickly.

My son had a space maintainer for two years. It was just removed 6 months ago. He had no problem with it at all. He was nervous when it was being put in but, he never complained once it was in.
He said it felt funny when it was taken out, he was used to it being there.
Good luck!:goodvibes

Quick ?? are you talking about a space maintainer, or a space regainer? seems like people on here are talking about 2 different things... a space MAINTAINER shouldn't hurt at all.... it is put in after a baby tooth has been pulled but the adult tooth isn't nearly ready to come in, so that is placed in to hold the space open so the teeth don't come together. A space REGAINER is usually used by an orthodontist to open up a space between teeth that has closed up and needs to open again... the Regainer is usually slightly painful (it's just like braces.. moving teeth always hurt a little) while a space maintainer shouldn't hurt, just takes a little adjusting to get used to that new piece of metal in their mouth..... should be 2 appointments for the maintainer-- 1 for the impression and 1 to cement it to the teeth.. neither appointment should take very long and there is no numbing involved... HTH :)

Well the space maintainer hurt like the dickens when my DGD had hers put in. It was not a short appointment either. She is 6 and has had a lot of work done and damage due to severe acid reflux. This was the worst appointment she had.
