Last time I rang and booked a cruise, the DCL CM gave me her phone number, and it's also on my reservation. She was great to deal with, so happy to call her directly for my next lot of queries. But, I just wanted to make sure...

The number she gave me starts 1855-xxx-xxxx. Just checking, that 1855 is like the 1800 right? Not in terms of free call, but in terms of country / area code?

Thanks.

1-855 is just like calling 1-800...they are using multiple iterations of the 1-8XX numbers now. All toll free :)

The "1" is needed for long-distance calls within the US. I believe it also acts as the US country code when dialing from international as well.
The "855" acts as the area code. Here in the US 855 is another toll-free code like 800, but I'm not sure if it is toll-free for international calls, some are only toll-free within the states.
Calling from Australia, you may need to dial a country exit code first before the 1-855-xxx-xxxx. I believe it's 0011 for Australia but I'll admit I'm horrible with international calls, at work I use tie-lines to call other offices because I mess it up all the time.

Just to clarify -- most area codes starting with "8xx" are NOT toll-free, only 6 are currently toll-free codes: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844.

Enjoy your cruise!

I've always seen the toll-free numbers given with the "In the US" and sometimes including Canada with a regular "Outside the US dial..." number given.

Thanks all.

That's the bit I was confused about - 1 is the US country code, and we would never dial our country code (61) before any number. Whereas you guys do for 1-800 numbers. So I was really just wanting to make sure I didn't need to dial 0011-1-1855, just 0011-1855, like I do 0011-1800 for the US. All confusing.

It's also definitely not toll free from here either.

And, yes, at work I use tie lines too :)

Fwiw Verizon Fios customers do not need to dial "1" for any #'s within the US.

In fact they ask you not to dial 1, unless necessary, which I will assume, being in the USA, is never needed.

If you get Skype as an App on your cell phone you can actually call free phone numbers in a lot of countries. I use it all the times and it works really great! As long as your phone is using wifi for data it is totally free!

I totally feel silly now...my area code is 850 and that is definitely not toll free! That's what I get for typing before my brain is completely engaged/caffeinated! :o
