Hi everyone. I asked this over at the cruise line forums but thought some of you could help. My brother is coming with dh and I on a 5 night cruise on the Dream next year. One of the stops is Nassau. IS this a tendered port? DB is in a power chair so the tender will not be an option (too difficult).

If it is not a tendered port does anyone know of any excursions that are power chair friendly (most say collapsible chair, must transfer etc) Transferring is possible but not fun when it is an unknown environment and he needs a lot of help. Is the town accessible can we walk around shop etc? Thank so much any info is greatly appreciated:goodvibes

Nassua is not a tendered port. He will be fine with his powerchair as long as you all don't want to go somewhere that you need a taxi. There is from my understanding only one taxi on the island that is wheelchair friendly. The taxis on the island are mini vans that they try to stuff right full with people and any extra room is made up into seats too.

There is shopping right off from the port. Many of the best jewelry shopping is right close to port.

What ever you do, do not try and take a water ferry. They are sinkings waiting to happening.

With a powerchair, if you want to go to Atlantis, you will need a manual wheelchair to go there. I don't know of too many accessible tours on the island.

I'll chime in...Nassau is much more w/c friendly than it used to be. As such, many of the shops in the downtown area are now ramped and the hospitality building that you pass through to/from the ship is air conditioned, all one level, and even has an accessible restroom. If you want to do an excursion, the ones offered in advance do require that someone be able to take a few steps, use a collapsible chair, etc. You can visit the Port Adventures desk upon arrival and ask if an accessible vehicle can be arranged-do you know yet what you'd like to do in Nassau? If it's just a bit of shopping, as peemag mentioned, you would not need to drive to access the Straw Market/downtown shopping area. Be prepared though to cross busy streets. I've been out in traffic in my power chair and it's a bit daunting, but certainly doable.---Kathy
