Congratulations on the new job!![]()
Thank you so much!!
CONGRATULATIONS!! That is so very cool! It is my dream to be a certified nurse midwife or mother/baby nurse! I had trouble deciding what to do when I went to college, and I ended up with a teaching degree. After teaching a few years, I knew I made the wrong choice but I was going to stay home with my kids anyway, so it didn't matter. Once I'm done having kids (and, like you, it seems to happen to me a lot!), I plan on fast-tracking my nursing degree since I already have a bachelors. I would love for you to tell me all the ins and outs sometime!
I have a bachelors in fine arts that I got the traditional way. Almost right after graduation I started taking some nursing pre-reqs while working. Then after Abby was born I finished that second bachelors going semi full-time. I felt very called to it. I have always wanted to get my masters as a CNM but Alabama does not allow home births or birth center births and the doctors block them out of hospitals. I had to go really far away to have a birth at the only hospital in the area with a midwife and the hospital was so bad that I didn't do it for the other two births. When I was younger I was ready to fight the good fight and I went to the capital and tried march and went to midwife meeting but now, meh. It is still really important and I know we can change this state one day but younger and more dedicated women will have to pick up the slack. Right now, I am just too busy.
I want to focus on breastfeeding education and would love to become a lactation consultant. That is something this state desperately needs too and it is a more marketable skill.
But you should totally go for it! Georgia is a great state for all kinds of CNMs and you will love it. If I thought we would move somewhere where CNMs are accepted I would really consider it again.
