To me, though, judging whether or not someone should live or die is the ultimate and something I am not prepared to decide.

I wouldn't want to have to do it either. Nor would I want to be an officer in the military that had to send men into battle to kill and/or be killed.

But I am glad that our society has people who are willing to take on these difficult tasks and make hard decisions.

Also, I think that some of the "blood thirsty" statements on here are a reflection of the horror that people feel for this type of crime and a way to vent their anguish for the little girl's family. Given the chance to actually inflict the type of pain and suffering they are advocating for this guy, I doubt that most people could actually do it.

I usually try to ignore your posts since...I really don't understand why you "grace" us with your intelligence...we on a Disney site who love fluff so much but that is beside the point....
but you are a VERY SAD man I feel VERY SORRY for you....

This little girl didn't deserve to die and be tortured by this barbarian....I'm so mad right now I can't even finish...

I can understand that. I feel that if I expect to be shown mercy then I must show mercy myself. It's certainly not easy at times. But I must try.

I respect that. The problem is knowing when or if the need to show mercy and compassion get overuled by the need for the safety of society. When does showing mercy for the crimanal cause us to be cruel to the victem's family because they must worry about him someday getting out? Its a very difficult line to find. I agree on one thing though, this should not be about vengence, it should be about doing the best thing when there are no good options.

If we kill him, another human life is lost (and yes, even this person is still human). If we leave him alive and incarcerate him, he will suffer in prison and present a slight risk of being released, thereby allowing some of the threat to continue. Both solutions stink.

I'm not interested in his suffering, I leave that issue to God. I am interested in finding the best solution for all concerned. The death penalty seems like the best choice in this case, but its never an easy call.

Yes, as a matter of fact I am pleased.

"I'm sure that the BLOODLUST AND VENGEANCE crowd will be pleased"

I'd be pleased if they ran his nether regions through a shredder first before killing him slowly and painfully.

The death that they have planned for him, while justified, does not please me NEARLY enough.

As a Christian, I hope this man truly repents and finds God's forgiveness before he faces the consequences of his actions. It does not change however, the fact that he should be held accountable for his actions. We all should be.

The compassion I have is that it should be done humanely, and I hope he truly seeks God's forgiveness before it is too late. That is between him and God.

Now... having said how I feel about this specific issue ... I am also going to say how statements that I am "blood thirsty" and "morally just as awful as this man for approving of the death penalty" anger me.

Those kinds of statements are outright attacks on my person. I don't care if they are said "generally". It is a generalized attack on my person because I fall into the group that is being pidgeon holed and labeled.

You may certainly state how you feel on the issue - but please do not presume to know what motivates my position on ANY issue. You cannot speak for me. Only I may do that.

Well said, DD. I agree with you 100%, and I couldn't have said it nearly as well as you did.

Do you not think that I am also outraged by this???? I, too, have children. I cannot even imagine the living hell that her parents must be going through. I won't even pretend to know AT ALL even a fraction of their pain. I just know that more killing will not bring her back.

You don't know what real pain is until you lose a child and losing one to a horrible crime such as this makes it even worse. He deserves to be tortured the way he tortured that girl, so that he knows how much she suffered before she died. To be honest JTB you have no way of knowing how you would feel if you were in that position of it having been your child that he molested and killed. You too would want justice done, and I highly doubt if christianity would be high on your list. You can't say you wouldn't want that man dead too, right now you can say no you wouldn't, but put in that position where it was your child, more than likely your thoughts would change.

I'm not discounting that. At this time, however, I feel the way that I have explained.

Eros, any reason you haven't posted this on the Debate forum? Maybe there are less people there to inflame:rolleyes:

Let's keep the comments on other's opinions out of this please, but feel free to express your own opinions without getting personal. It can be done. :)

Once again, DixieDreamer has said so eloquently what I wish I could. :D

I don't know.

Capital punishment is such a touchy subject that I don't really know how to say what I feel. Pedophiles cannot be cured. Not with rehab or shock treatments or 50 years in prison. This particular man did what he did to that child and then arranged her body in some horrific manner to flaunt what he did. Does he deserve cable television and three meals a day?

I don't know. I know that it sickens me that there are people out there who have these sicknesses and are free to lurk in our lives because we cannot see the world the way they see it.

Eros stays away from the debate board for some reason.

Definition:

com·pas·sion Pronunciation Key (km-pshn)
n.

Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the
wish to relieve it. See Synonyms at pity.

I believe we all have a deep awareness of the suffering of the family of this little girl and our wish to relieve it is by putting him to death.

Sorry, but I have no compassion for the one who committed the crime. He is not the one who suffered or is suffering.

Definition:

com·pas·sion·ate Pronunciation Key (km-psh-nt)
adj.

1.Feeling or showing compassion; sympathetic. See Synonyms at
humane.
2.Granted to an individual because of an emergency or other
unusual circumstances: compassionate military leave.

tr.v. com·pas·sion·at·ed, com·pas·sion·at·ing,
com·pas·sion·ates (-nt)

To pity.

See above definition of compassion. Sorry but I cannot pity someone who chose to do something so horrible.

------------------------

This country is too soft and too politically correct. If this had happened in other countries around the world, he would have been immediately executed in public for all to see.

I don't know about your God, but the one I studied growing up wouldn't have compassion for this man either. He sure didn't have it on Sodom and Gomorrah, nor many other instances in the Bible where people committed horrible wrongdoings. He killed whole armies of men, countries even, with plagues and floods and ordered other armies of men to go and kill thousands in His name and for His purposes. I honestly can't see Him holding people at fault for trying this man for what he is and holding him accountable for his actions, even if it means death.

Three cheers for the DA. Cases like this are why I am a proud member of the Hang Em High Club. HEH forever!!!!

I actually think this is a good point Bet, I would love to know how the christians feel about the military. Is it wrong to kill another in that situation? If you are staring down the barrel of a gun and it's you or him is it ok to take that person's life. If a rapist broke into your house and started to hurt one of your children would you do everything in you power including killing that man to save your child? My instinct would be to shoot first and ask questions second. Would you wait for the police to come fix it for you or would you in this case save your child?

To me it's the same thing. Get this man as far away from society as humanly possible, and to me that means the death penalty.

EROS applauds JTB and others who are willing to stand up and be counted against the STATE SPONSORED MURDER which we euphemistically call capital punishment:( :( :(.

The CB always seems to pride itself on the "compassion" of its members. Such a loving crowd. Always willing to go the extra mile to help a fellow man:rolleyes:   . It's clear that many here just don't want to understand/recognize their OWN capacity for BLOODLUST AND VENGEANCE . That's OK.............keep up the DENIAL if it helps you truly believe that you're really a kind and decent person:rolleyes:   .

KILLING IS KILLING IS KILLING . I just think that the majority of you are more comfortable with executions because the STATE embraces them. After all, the STATE is never wrong. Right????

A lot of us are comfortable with the idea of killing killers because, quite simply, they asked for it. That's the price of taking someone else's life: forfeiting one's own.

A question for the real compassionate ones here: what should be the difference in jail time between a child kidnapper/rapist, and a child kidnapper/rapist who kills his victim?
