Credit Card With Chip

I always call my credit card company when traveling so there are no issues with charging out of my normal area. My credit card company says I no longer need to do that as they are more likely to approve charges with cards that have the chip. I explained that I would have no phone service on the ship and they took my travel information even though they said it was not necessary. (I made an online charge last week and received a text alert asking to confirm if I had indeed made the charge.) Has anyone lately had an issue with using their chipped card on their shipboard account if they had NOT contacted their credit card company? This would be one thing I could take off of my pre-cruise list of 'to-dos'.

Speaking as a banker, yes chip cards are more secure and less likely to have transaction information compromised, but I think it's still a good idea to notify credit card companies or banks, in the case of debit cards, that you are traveling. Computers monitor activity and I can see the algorithms still flagging cards used outside of their normal pattern. Chip cards can still be stolen and used fraudulently so I'd keep it on your pre cruise list. I know we do and will.

I live in Canada and we have had Pin and Chip technology for several years here. I always call my credit card company before going out of town and not once have they ever told me 'it's ok you don't have to call us." That's just odd in my mind that your bank would say that. We will continue to call.

Used my chip bank card to book the tours we are taking in Ireland. I didn't have a travel notice on the card yet since we won't go till June. I instantly received a phone call to check for fraud. I would put travel notices on all the cards you would use. :thumbsup2

You can also do this online for many cards and accounts. Giving specific information to what country you will be go to as well.

Many cards waive the fees for overseas purchases on the exchange rate to. Something you may want to look into before you head out.

I always keep my card info written down. That way for internet purchases or my rental car. If it becomes lost. I have it and can do many things online to survive a few days.

I always keep an ID separate from my credit cards. Make sure you get an RFID blocker.

Thoughts....
  • I think the PIN is safer than an unreadabile signature
  • I wish the PIN code and cash advance code could be different.
  • the RFID tap feature took me a long time to get used to. Can't believe credit card transactions can be done with no signature or PIN.

Anyone hear about electronic pick-pocketing? Not sure I want to be in a crowded places anymore.

We know about credit card skimmers..... have heard about the new "shimmers"?

Canadian as well, our cc stopped taking travel information about a year and a half/two years ago. You used to even be able to do it through online banking however that has stopped as well. Here is what is posted when you try and do it....

The BMO Travel Notification service has been discontinued. This is due to advancement in BMO's fraud detection system that protects your card around the clock. Your BMO Credit Card also comes with Zero Liability Protection for unauthorized transactions. With all of these protections in place, there is no need to let us know of your travel plans.

Questions? See frequently asked questions for more information. If you still have a question, please call us at 1-800-263-2263.

When you call in they tell you it is not necessary. If you insist you want it recorded they will say okay and take some information however, once recorded, I doubt it is ever looked at again. It is my understanding that all major cc's are now this way.

Capital One has a similar message to that above. No way to notify them.

Interesting. The card I use when I travel to the US is my Amazon Chase Visa. It has pin and chip technology and when I call to let them know I'll be away they happily take my information down.

My general bank is Chase (I'm in the US), and they will take info for travel to foreign countries - but not travel within the US.

But the last time we tried to use our credit cards in Orlando, they were all declined due to the area being known for fraud. At least that was in the US, but I'd be worried about it happening while on the ship.

@lds0191 and @jrabbit I have the Chase Disney Premier Visa as well and used to always call before travel, but I don't understand why they don't want us to anymore and I also don't understand the rationale of saying it's bc they approve more transactions with the chip? I do not use a pin with my chip. Also as some above posters, i recently had a purchase flagged and my account suspended while at home with an online purchase. They sent an automated email asking if it was indeed me attempting to make the on line purchase. I won't have access to my email or text when I'm in a foreign port or at sea!

Thank you all for responding. Capital One is the company I am dealing with and it does say on the website not to call and it also says to make sure they have contact information so they can contact you if there is a problem. When I tried to explain that I would not be able to be contacted the representative said surely there was someone on the ship that would have a phone. Ugh! She did take my travel information and was very polite but I could practically hear her rolling her eyes. However, I was doing the same thing, lol.

I do it online with my Chase Premier Disney Visa. Have never called and did not get anything about not needing to do it anymore when I submitted it this morning either.

Chip or not, I always notify the companies of the charge cards I plan on using, including my bank for the ATM. It can't hurt and protects your accounts.

I have an actual recent experience with this.

CALL YOUR COMPANIES AND NOTIFY THEM!

Last August we did 7 nights on the Fantasy, Western Caribbean. We have the chips, and we did not call ours, as we had gotten the impression in the past that it was no longer needed. By the first port, Cozemel, both of our Credit Cards, Discover, and ToysRus MasterCard (Syncrony Bank) had been flagged and turned off.

My wife called Discover Card, using the phone at Guest services and was able to get it turned back on, but when I called Mastercard to get the other one turned back on, they wanted to send me a text to my cell phone to verify my identity. I tried to explain that I was in the middle of the ocean and had no cell service, they were not interested. I suppose I could have turned off airplane mode, tried to shut off everything else on my phone, buy some data and receive their text, but I chose not to. That card stayed deactivated until we got back home.

From now on, we will be notifying the company, whether they want us to or not.
