Crazy to Just Bring Carry On to Disney?

item to confirm....I think someone said that the resorts sell sunscreen, right?
Yes they do. I have bought sunscreen at the Wilderness Lodge gift shop in the past. Obviously it's marked up price wise but they do sell it.

Great. Thanks for confirming. Figured it wouldn't be a bargin, and marked up as you say, but good to hear it's available.

We ALWAYS travel carry-on only. I've even been know to travel personal item only on flights that don't include carry-ons. Compression packing cubes are a life saver. During a longer trip, I plan on having to do laundry once or twice, but for a week, I can easily pack in a carry-on. For Disney, because we're generally in athletic shorts and t-shirts only, I can pack in one carry on for two of us if I really needed to.

We have a baby now and had to give in and check a bag last trip. I literally looked at the suitcase at first and thought "how on Earth am I going to fill that?"

An alternative to make up wipes is the microfiber make up removing cloths - they work great with just soap+water. I use them at home, but I have some small ones from Walgreens that are great for traveling, especially if you're planning on doing laundry.

On my last trip, I packed a compressible duffle bag in my carry-on.. At the end of the trip, my souvenirs went in the carry-on and my cloth in the duffle bag and were checked.. At the time it was cheaper to have the one checked bag coming back home than to ship my items back home. My sister's family will sometimes just buy a new suitcase to pack extra stuff in.. Granted they travel a lot and go through suitcases like crazy. They have also packed suitcases inside suitcases.

It’s probably already been mentioned but you can buy refillable bottles that are the correct size for carry on luggage. I’ve seen them at Dollar Stores, Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart and Amazon. You can fill with your cosmetics and liquid laundry stuff from home. The only thing you might want a ton of is sunscreen so you could have that sent to the resort with a grocery order.

I’ll be doing carry on only for my trip to Ireland and the Isle of Man this weekend. I’m just trying to cut down on potential lines and luggage loss if at all possible. I’m also not keen to pay $50 or more each way for a bag that’s likely to get lost or cause me long waits.

I have a small duffel as a personal item. My purse and quite a few other things fit in there. It’s malleable and squished under the seat easily. Check your airline for size requirements. Then I’ll have a carry on and I’ll wear my bulkier shoes/ sweater since I’m always cold on the plane anyway. This should be plenty for 9 days and I’m actually kind of excited about the minimal aspect of it all. I’m tired of lugging too much stuff on vacation.

My only issue with the sunscreen is my kiddo can only use the mineral kinds, anything else and he reacts, almost like a chemical burn. So I always pack small bottle, usually a few of them. But I have seen the regular stuff in POP's giftshop. I know for my next cruise, Carnival also sells sunscreen, you can buy it and have it waiting in the cabin (reef safe mineral type). So that will let us do carryon for that trip too.

What are you all using for your clear 1 litre pouch for the liquids in your carryon? Normally we check in all our liquids except for medication. I can’t seem to find a resealable ziplock type bag that meets the exact dimensions allowable without being too small.

I usually use a medium sized ziplock freezer bag. It's pretty much exactly a litre. https://ziploc.ca/en/Products/Bags/Freezer/Freezer-Bags-Quart-Medium
Though I have thought about investing in more reusable tsa approved clear zipper bags.

They all seem to be the same size and the ones I have say something like 'TSA approved'. I've definitely used them many times to fly.
I also use bar shampoo (from lush) and sometimes bar conditioner when I travel which saves room in my liquids bag.

The only thing is, depending on the airline and flight and where your seat is, and how full the flight is, you may have to gate check carry on bags. I saw this multiple times over the last two weeks , on my West Coast trip. Some times the gate staff ask for volunteers to gate check carryon, sometimes they just announce halfway through boarding that the flight crew have said there is no more room and all remaining bags have to be gate checked.
This happens constantly on Delta flights. Then you board and there are at least a dozen empty bins. I swear they do it to push people into purchasing more expensive seats which board earlier 😡

I actually have a bunch of the 1L bags from the airport. Every trip I swipe a bunch and just leave them in my luggage. This way security can't tell me my plastic bag is too big, not clear, etc. It's from the airport! lol

What we do....

Only ever take a back pack with the bare minimum inside - no hardsided rolling carry-ons which might be gate checked. When we get to where we are going we buy whatever didn't fit in the backpack and another bag to put it in that can be checked for the flight home. Extra bag will also hold souevenirs .

When we get to Orlando, we take a cab or rideshare to walmart to buy whatever we need (including bottled water and snacks) and then another cab/rideshare to the hotel. Yes, we spend a bit more on the transport and extra bag and it takes a couple of hours out of our vacation but we never have to wait for our luggage or risk not having it arrive. Items purchased...enough socks and underwear to last the week, toiletries, sunscreen, razors, moleskins, bandaids, medications like antihistamines, tylenol, decongestant. Personally, i only ever pack a couple of sundresses, 1 swimsuit, 1 pair of shorts, 3 tshirts, something to sleep in, 1 pair sandals, wallet, phone (with charging equip), deodorant, lip balm, sunglasses and a poncho. I wear a shirt, a hoodie and a pair of sweat pants or leggings and runners/sneakers on the plane.

Gather the items you think you absolutely need and try fitting it all into a backpack. If it doesn't fit, be ruthless and start eliminating. I promise you don't need half the clothes you think you do. No one there knows you or cares what you look like.

So we found some zipper seal medium sized bags at Dollarama that are the exact measurements for the liquids pouch, and they are soooo tiny! I’m going to need to figure out the best way to pack all our liquid stuff into four of these bags. Then my son says to me, but how are you going to fit all those tiny soap and lotion bottles from the resort into that little bag to bring home 😩 oh my gosh, I forgot all about those! Might have to toss everything out for those H20+ souvenirs , LOL.

I don't think they have the travel sized items in the resort rooms anymore. They have those wall-mounted things.
