Craft glue recommendation for my Scrabble project?

I am making a project for my niece's wedding gift. They love Scrabble, so I knew I wanted to do something with that. I found this memo board at Hobby Lobby half price:

And I have filled it like so:

I need to glue the pieces down. The center section that I am gluing to is stiff and a bit rough- burlap with paint. You can see it on the Hobby Lobby link. Should I use a hot glue gun, or some other type of craft glue? I don't want any stringy hot glue showing, and I worry about pieces coming loose. I think I used to use something like Aleen's Tacky Glue on projects. What do you think would work best?

I would take it to the craft store and let them give you a recommendation. They would know what is best. Looks awesome.

if the burlap is secure and won't pull with the tile weight I would probably use hot glue. It is my go to if I really want something to stay

The burlap is stuck down, so it shouldn't pull away. DH thinks I should coat it with a polyurethane and let it seep through the cracks but I'm not sure about that.

The tacky glue would probably work just fine, but when I'm working with anything that I never want to come loose I use No More Nails. Its a construction adhesive, and very strong. They have a latex based one that goes down white, but dries clear.

Tacky Glue... Aleenes Tacky Glue.

Worked great. I think it would work better for this kind of wood, porous, type surface than a glue gun or super glue.

You can put a little on each part you are gluing, let it dry for a few moments to become 'tacky', then secure in place...

I'd use Tacky/Gorillia glue to hold the tiles down and the use poly over the top.

I think I'd go with epoxy. You can get it at the hardware store.

E6000 is a glue that pretty much permanently glues EVERYTHING. All different surfaces to each other. Did I already mention it's permanent? It's the glue that professional crafters & jewelers use.

You may think the burlap is stuck down good right now. But what is the burlap stuck on with? And will that fail over time? You want something that is going to seep through the burlap and stick right through to the BASE material.

I'd use the glue gun and just pick off strings after they dry

This is so cute and so thoughtful, and I'm sure the couple will love and treasure it. However...it would drive me absolutely batty that there are no words formed downwards. I know the project would be much harder to do the proper Scrabble way, but I personally would prefer that.

I didn't want to be the one to say it since this is a thread asking about glue, but since you brought it up, yes. I think that if the OP is making this for Scrabble fanatics, it should spell words going downward and not just across.
