Could I be happy with a switch to FF?

It arrived late this afternoon. Honestly though, it might be a few days before I can do much with it.

What kind of line is that? We all know that once that battery is flashing green in the charger its go time!!! :lmao:

Well, we all knew I wouldn't last out a few days.

Here's my first ISO 12,800 shot. The cat's not all black.... and he's not in a dark closet. but I'm loving what I see so far. This is a jpeg straight out of the camera. Very impressive.

I still have a lot to learn though.

Looks very sharp to my eye. Gorgeous colors and detail. I think you have a winner.

Btw what's your favorite Disney Dark Ride at Disneyland?

Thanks Mike. I'm anxious to get out and find some other things to shoot. I think the cat is weary of me now. ;)

As for DL dark rides, that's easy. Alice. We're big Alice fans from way back and find it so charming. :)

Well?

And? :)

I'm pretty sure the answer to that is in the amazing lack of noise in those photos. Whether I'll be happy with less reach remains to be seen. I have a hunch I'll forget about that just as quickly as I forgot about the extra weight and size.

I'm really anxious to try this out on volleyball, but of course won't have a game until next Wednesday. I know it's not a camera recommended for sports, but if focus and burst are at least as decent as the T2i, that will be fine. I was struggling mostly with wanting to go over ISO 3200 but knowing I wouldn't be happy with the images if I did.

More than anything, I can't wait to be sitting on Main Street at DL shooting the night time Christmas parade. That is going to be a real treat. :)

Using the 6D in the gym is more a matter of picking the correct white balance, depending on the lighting. I sometimes use the color temperature (lower works for me fairly well).

congrats on your 6D. You'll like it and I've enjoyed better pictures this year compared to last year (with the 60D).

Congrats on the new camera.

Oh sweetie... You have NO idea. You are going to wonder why you didn't do this a long time ago. Actually, your timing was perfect. The 6D is the first one that affordable for the rest of us and still gets the benefits the pros get.

Enjoy!

I'm really very excited to start using it.:thumbsup2

And I usually shoot in RAW, so leave the camera set to automatic white balance.

Now if I can only figure out how to actually change it to RAW.......:lmao: Don't laugh. It took me a while this morning just to figure out how to select the center focus point!

I'll get there.....

This camera really got my attention from the day I first heard about it. In the end, it wasn't a terribly difficult choice because I just had an irrational need to try this camera and see what I could do with higher usable ISO. When I moved from the Xsi to the T2i, the ability to go up to 3200 made a big difference for me. I'm sure this will make an exponentially larger difference.

This big change is really quite uncharacteristic of me. But I'm already sure I won't regret it! :cool1:

I think a lot of how happy you'll be with the 6D when it comes to sports depends on A. what you were using before and B. your personal expectations. No, it's not great at tracking and it's not a camera I'd recommend for someone who shoots sports professionally. But that doesn't mean it's horrible and won't do just fine for many people. People dog on the 6D hard because of it's AF system, comparing it to the 5DmkIII. And no, it's not in the same league AF wise as the 5DmkIII. However, it's got a much better AF system (and everything else) than the 5DmkII and people always seem to overlook that.

I use mine for dance. I rarely have missed focus and I shoot some pretty fast moving jazz and hip hop sometimes. I was using a 50D before and I feel like the 6D has a higher keeper rate for me in terms of focus.

I'm sure it will be fine. I didn't buy the camera to shoot sports. We're on the down side with kids sports. This VB season was sort of a bonus for us. We thought our sports years were behind us.

I also think it won't be as challenging as other sports since the kids each stay in a fairly small area on the court.

When my son was running XC I was so frustrated with the burst rate on my XSi. That's not even an issue with VB. I'll probably never fill my buffer. I have been struggling with focus a bit on the T2i but I have a hunch that's because I have been shooting with such a shallow depth of field and wide open. (I assume this to be the case because I was struggling with focus even when she was standing still).

And honestly, I didn't want to buy a camera based on how it did with sports. She might play for the next 4 years. Or she might be done in 2 weeks. ;)

I just went back and reread this whole thread and I think it should be a "Stickie", It`s full of great information for people who are contemplating a jump from crop to full frame. It also offers a lot of other info on other options as well. I`m getting ready to ad the 6D to my kit to be a companion for my 70D. I like the idea of having both. I was looking for some thoughts on the 24-105mm because that`s the lens that comes with camera.

I just got back from my first trip to Disney with the 6D. I was so happy with the upgrade! You really would not go wrong with the 6D/70D combo.

I bought my 6D with the 24-105 kit lens. I still wasn't sold on how happy I would be with the f/4 (especially at night in the parks) so I added a used copy of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. I probably like the 2.8 a bit more, but it's heavier and has less range. So I'll probably use the 24-105 f/4 lens most of the time. Still, I'm very happy to have the 2.8 lens in my kit. I used it for this shot and was very happy with the results. I need to study more of my thoughts for an overall assessment, but so far I feel like the 2.8 lens is just a bit sharper.

It reviews alright: http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/420-canon_24105_4_5d

What's the price difference of the Kit vs. the body only?

At B@H the kit is $2,099 after $300 rebate. The body only is $1,499 after $300 rebate. The 24-105 is $1,149 by it self. The Tamron 24-70 2.8 is $1,199 after $100 rebate.

What other lenses do you already have?

Depends on how many EF/FF lenses you may already have, or at least it did to me. I didn't HAVE many that weren't EF-S when I started. I bought the kit to HAVE something decent walk-around FF to start. Don't forget that f4 on this camera is like 2.8 on a crop (or BETTER) as far as light gathering.

In hindsight, I'm still not sure why the kit lens gets a bad rap sometimes except the ones surrounding it in the lineup are so good. It's a L lenses and it's solid as a rock. I still haven't replaced that space in my bag. Would I love to have a 2.8 in that space? Sure, but I couldn't do it for anything resembling what I covered that space with in the kit. Will I eventually? Probably, but it's not my priority right now.

I`m pretty much set up for crop with the Tamron 17-50 2.8, Tokina 11-16 2.8, Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 . I realize that FF will be like starting all over but I want to keep the 70D for wildlife and sports and use the 6D for landscape and low light. I really prefer not to use a flash so I really like fast lenses.

I'd probably go for the kit with the lens, from what I've been reading it's an L in build quality only, but it's a good walk around lens, if you find you need a faster lens, or aren't happy with the IQ, sell it, and you'll have at least half the price of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC.

That's about the spot I was in when I made the switch. Just as an FYI, the Tokina will work on the 6D if you don't zoom past 16.

I do see a useful spot in my kit for both the 24-105 and the 24-70.
