Could I be happy with a switch to FF?

All this talk of full frame has me looking at a Pentax 645Z medium format. :)

That`s some serious camera. I wouldn`t want to lug that thing around the parks all day.

LOL! Me either, I have a micro 4:3 system for that! Medium format would be for landscapes and such, and it wouldn't be carried far from the car.

Absolutely jawdropping -- razor sharp. And you couldn't have had the aperture wide open with that depth of field -- the tree is as sharp as the reindeers. Is this why you don't like primes, because the depth of field is so limited at 1.8 (or whatever it might be)? I love primes for their crispness, but you wouldn't get a shot like this with my beloved pancake. Nicely done! Looks amazing.

I just got back from my first trip to Disney with the 6D. I was so happy with the upgrade! You really would not go wrong with the 6D/70D combo.

I bought my 6D with the 24-105 kit lens. I still wasn't sold on how happy I would be with the f/4 (especially at night in the parks) so I added a used copy of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. I probably like the 2.8 a bit more, but it's heavier and has less range. So I'll probably use the 24-105 f/4 lens most of the time. Still, I'm very happy to have the 2.8 lens in my kit. I used it for this shot and was very happy with the results. I need to study more of my thoughts for an overall assessment, but so far I feel like the 2.8 lens is just a bit sharper.

So Flickr says that the aperture was 2.8. I'm going to have to figure out what I'm doing wrong, because when I shoot at 2.8, my depth of field seems to be about six inches or less!

No, the tree is out of focus, the middle reindeer is what was focused on. The smaller the f/ number, the shallower the depth of field.

Thanks Scrapyap. :)

When you click on the photo, it takes you to Flickr, where you can choose to view the photo in its original size. When you blow it up to full size, you can see that the focus was indeed on the center reindeer as SkaGoat indicates.

The farther you are away from your subject, the larger the plane of focus.

Some lenses (both prime and zoom) are not really sharp wide open. One of the things I look for in a zoom is one that is reasonably sharp even when used wide open. My nifty fifty is pretty awful wide open at 1.8. So I rarely use it.

In general primes are sharper than zooms. However, I was very happy with the performance of this zoom (Tamron 24-70 f/2.8). I generally prefer zooms just for the flexibility they offer in terms of composition without needing to zoom with my feet. This is of particular importance at Disney where it's hard to get around the crowd.

Can I ask you what software you're using to get the actuation numbers from your camera(s)? I'm afraid of malware!

Another DIS poster made a couple recommendations for me back in the fall when I was evaluating camera options. I ended up going with eoscount.com. It was around $5 for a one time count I believe. I haven't noticed any malware issues since using it.

Thanks! I already have a few "red dot" lenses, so am planning to replace my T4i with a 6D. This thread has helped a lot -- thank you! My 85mm lens seems very sharp even when wide open. So does the lowly pancake.

Is the 85mm lens a 1.8? I was considering that one at one time. I think my next step will probably be a wide angle though. I like my Tokina but am not really thrilled that I'm limited to using it at 16mm.

If you're considering an upgrade to the 6D, then you should subscribe to canonpricewatch.com. I get emails every couple days with various Canon related deals. There were some great deals on the 6D over the holidays.

Kudos to poster WilsonFlyer who gave me the link to the site to check actuations, as well as the link to Canonpricewatch.com.

The 85mm is a 1.8. I have a Tokina, too, but I like photographing people (family members!) more than anything else, so it's of limited value there. I love my 85 for portraits of all kinds, though I think 50 mm is supposed to produce the best "match" with the way the human eye sees a person. Anything wider produces some distortion of the human figure and face (though I use the 40 anyway -- so light to carry on a hot day in the parks and not bad in low light - 2.8).

Thanks for the canonpricewatch link. Canon has the $300 rebate going again this month, so I think I'm going to flip the switch. (Pull the trigger sounds too violent. :) )

I love the Tokina for landscapes and on ride photography. :)

I was never a fan of the 50mm length on my crop sensor, but was ready to dig it out and love with the FF....... until I realized how soft it was wide open. I'd love to hear what others have to say about theirs. Mine is so bad maybe I just have a bad copy. It does get better stopped down, but if I lose the 1.8, I might as well go with that Tamron 24-70 that is pretty sharp wide open at 2.8.

Be sure to post here when you get the new camera. You will have a ball with it.

I am just seeing that you purchased the 6D. Great choice and I am glad you are having a great time with it. I love mine and couldnt be happier with the decision.

So for your 50 question. I have the Canon 50 1.4, alot of people say its soft but i have having no issues with it. I took all of my dark ride photos with it.

Very nice!

That looks nice and sharp, especially for being wide open. The one I had issue with was the "nifty fifty", the 1.8 version. I hadn't pulled it out to use in a long time (since I'm not a fan of that focal length on a crop sensor). My daughter started playing volleyball last fall, so I decided I'd give it a try again. I really needed it as wide open as possible for the indoor action shots (and didn't want to go over ISO 3200 on my T2i). But I had to stop it down just to get it somewhat sharp. I'll be anxious to try my hand at volleyball again this year with higher ISO's and a new camera.

I would think Volleyball would be really hard to shoot with a narrow depth of field. I also have the 50 1.8 and it focuses very slow. the 1.4 has a USM motor in it which makes it focus alot faster.

You should be able to shoot with the 24-70 2.8 since the camera has such good high ISO images. The 6D center point if very good in AI SERVO mode also.

It is, but am OK with it as long as my daughter is in focus. The one issue I have had is her and the ball ending up on different planes of focus. But I'll take that over everything having motion blur.

I got the 6D right at the end of the VB season and only had the 24-105 f/4 lens for that one game I got to shoot. I'm looking forward to trying it with the 2.8 lens plus high ISO. I didn't want to go higher than 3200 on the T2i and that wasn't cutting it, even with the 2.8 lens.

Beyond 70mm, I'm still limited to f/4 though since I opted for that version of Canon's zoom.

Really glad to hear you're loving your 6D. I decided last summer after doing lots of research that the 6D is what I wanted to upgrade to and will be purchasing it in a few weeks (there's a $300 rebate this month), so I'm super excited. I'm also planing on getting the Tamron 24-75mm (I have the Tamron 17-50mm on my crop sensor and love it), so seeing that awesome shot you got of the parade makes me even more excited. I looks like that's the perfect combo for me for DL! How heavy is the 6D with that lens? Is it reasonable for carrying around the parks all day?

It's not a light combo. But it's worth it. Honestly though, if you use a Black Rapid style strap, it won't be a problem.

I've seen some great prices on the 6D with that rebate. Subscribe to canonpricewatch and you'll see all of them. I think I saw one for $1299 after rebate in the last couple weeks.
