A lot of the kids at the HS have these jackets that cost $165. My son wants one but he already has a winter coat that is brand new. I'm inclined to pay half but my DH thinks that is stupid. He says that he already has a nice winter coat that a lot of the kids have.

As a girl it was always important to have the right brand of clothes and we didn't have a lot of money so I never had the RIGHT clothes.

My DH doesn't ever care what he wears and clothes are very unimportant to him.

So is it important to have the RIGHT kind of clothes in HS or not?

It depends on the child. 17 yr. old DD loves clothes and has tons of them. 14 yr. old DS has tons too, but prefers to just wear blue jeans and t-shirts. He leaves the Tommy Hilfilger shirts hanging in the closet and wears his Boy Scout t-shirts instead. That's usually a big no-no - kids don't admit to being a Scout. But DS is so proud of his accomplishments that he just doesn't care what everyone else thinks or says. And he doesn't know or care what is "fashionable."

If he has a brand new jacket, I would be inclined to not buy another one. Who knows what will be in style next year.

I wouldn't buy one either.

My son is getting fussy on clothes as well, even though he is younger.

We don't buy it, but he can earn it.

Now, did you find a lower cost alternative... where are these coats?

You could find a lower cost but very similiar alternative, and then go from there.. Christmas is coming!

Is it important? To a child, yes it is. Adults who go to work have to wear the "right" clothes to fit in there if you think about it.

That being said if you go to a school where most kids can afford a 165 coat w/o blinking an eye then I suppose wearing the "right" kind of clothing would be a high priority to a kid in school.
