Controversial topics board....did I do something wrong?

A "sport version stick shift" refers to a manual transmission (stick shift) available in a sporty car model, allowing the driver more control and engagement with the driving experience, often preferred by enthusiasts for its ability to precisely manage gear changes and maximize performance in spirited driving situations.

I don't know how to drive it in sport. My husband seems to love it.
Does your car have a 3rd pedal (clutch)? If not, it's not a true "manual" shift.

No it does not, but I know the car he did when we got married did. . I just see my husband shifting and think I can't do that. I'm also stupid when it comes to cars. I do know comparing manual cars to pure shift cars and equating it to the percentage of who is voting for which candidate is really quite ridiculous. I think the poster admitted it was hyperbole like sunsets to hurricanes. Cute none the less.

They aren't controversial especially because there isn't any discussion. It's a majority of people in an echo chamber bashing other people who have a different viewpoint. If you want to get real controversial head on over to one of the holiday menu threads. Traditional menus are hotly contested. :rotfl2:
Agreed. I joined that board in the hope of in-depth discussion of topics not allowed on the CB. What I found was an echo chamber for a small group of posters. There have been a few posts that provided in-depth information but those have been few and far between. It's honestly kinda boring as you read the same rants, name calling and platitudes over and over. I look at it as a failed experiment.

Just to show you, I see it now, where the post in the Controversial Topics board shows as the most recent.

This little area is as close as I have came to the controversial boards and I actually have learned much just from peoples titles, while as enticing as it is this is as close as I want to get to that board. Id like to just keep my pre conceived notions of people that I interact with on these boards.

I’m amazed how few can drive a stick, hell I’m even more amazed, or I should say dumbfounded how few kids can read an analog clock!! lol
The majority of cars in Europe have gear sticks and the majority of young people learn to drive manual cars.
Controversial board isn’t only for Americans; all are welcome.

Oh let me continue to take this thread in a new direction. lol... this is changing though more and more are driving automatic... I live in Germany..Had to learn to drive stick at the young age of 30 when I moved here. I figured it out, but to be honest there are times where I dont even notice I am driving stick and then there are times I feel it is a PIA.. It's a PIA when I am trying to do other things while driving which is honestly not good. Driving stick requires more concentration on actually driving... I honestly feel for young kids its great as it forces you to drive and ensures you are putting your self in control of the car which requires thinking... drivein automatic doesnt require such concentration and ofteny our brain is also on automatic..

but if stuck in traffic and on a hill in traffic or parking parallel on a hill, you need to focus and to be honest most of us want an easy way out where we dont have to think so much or where we can text and drink cofffee while driving. I have notice hardly any European makes a buffet for them in the car with drinks and snacks... a challenge if you need to use both hands while driving.. Try eating drive thru while driving stick. doesnt work... maybe this why europeans are thinner lol

But automatic is also now becoming less in europe.. Mainly as most EVs dont have gears and no shift. And the main reason for stick was that is was more fuel effecient as manual idles a lot. but most cars now have start stop so that argument is out the window... VW in fact starting in 2025 to fade out the stick option for some of their car brands.

Do you have an option of whether to take a driving test for a manual or an automatic? Here, if you take your test in an automatic, you can’t drive a manual, without taking another test. But if you take your test in a manual, then you are allowed to drive both.

And of course, you've done your part in trying to have this "in-depth discussion"? What topics have you started that you want to have discussions about?

I will say, the bolded is pretty funny considering <edited out to protect sensitive eyes that aren't mature enough to not report things they don't like>

I would say a manual shift has the driver's ability to short-shift to keep the RPM shift point lower thereby saving fuel. The lower the RPM, the more fuel saved.

The start-stop feature doesn't really save much fuel; it's primarily designed as an emission compliance feature for the OEMs.

I'm not sure WebMasterCorey agrees...
Since creating this board to allow for political and religious discussions, I’ve reduced related infractions by nearly 99%. I’d much rather provide members a place to discuss these topics with restrictions. In the past, we had a similar setup called the Debate Board, which was open to everyone and quickly became chaotic. I didn’t want to use that name again or make it visible to everyone. While this board isn’t for everyone, I feel it has helped keep these topics more contained, both for the community as a whole and to reduce reports, infractions, and bannings as much as possible.

I think when you do the whole drivers ed thing you can choose?? my kids just did it, dont recall them making a choice. they learned stick.. but I was so that in the past if you did your driving test in manuel you could not drive stick.. still might be that way I was an exception or fell through the cracks as my state license was ILLinois and that state has a reciprical agreement so Igot afull license. some states ( for ex Texas) you need to pay and take classes. and thenconvert... my husband taught me on a field road how to drive stick lol.... and then weeks later I was alone on an autobahn, in a snow storm, stuck on a hill with a stick... ...

I think that new area is working fine and doing exactly what was intended. Controversial topics are confined to one area and if you don't want to participate no one is forcing you. It likely makes the job of moderators MUCH easier and prevents the rest of the site from turning into a free-for-all. I think some don't like that new area since they get challenged on statements they make that have no factual basis. Seems like a good thing to me when others can also state their views on whatever the issue happens to be. Anyone is welcome to engage in a conversation there, but should expect random rants with no factual basis will likely get challenged by those with a different point of view.

I agree with everything you posted, but want to point out, even if controversial topics were allowed on the main CB, if one didn't want to participate, no one was forced to.

it's more than start -stop.. most who drive auto, dont put the car in neutral when at a light.. they put the foot on the gas while engine is running not just idle.I am probably using the wrong terms here.

The start-stop feature the other poster's talking about (I think) is a newer feature on some cars where the engine basically turns off at stop lights and then kicks back on when the driver takes their foot off the brakes.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority or not but I've actually appreciated to be able to see the titles on the controversial board. I haven't joined that sub-forum, I may or may not in the future (maybe next year?? not sure) but being able to see that sometimes has made it like "eh...not now"

I understand the sentiment behind hiding that away like a poster has mentioned, I do, but I for one have used that as a way almost to keep an internal interest level gauge for me and you're only seeing the most recent thread added to if you are on the page a PP screen shot, you have to actively click more to see more (which I didn't do until just now). I don't personally need it to be hidden away despite not having joined it yet, is I guess what I'm saying.

You must be. I personally put my foot on the brake while stopped. Not sure why someone would have their foot on the gas. :confused3

I've driven cars where the idle was so bad I had to put it in neutral to keep it from stalling out. 🤣 On my really old beater (back in the day), I might have to push the gas a bit too. I know, that's a bad example, but I've been there.

My new car does do the auto-stop at red lights, well, sometimes anyway. I swear sometimes it decides to and sometimes it doesn't. I hate it when it does it, but the arrow is already on, so I am going to go imminently. It shows me how much gas I've saved, and over a about 16 months, it's still something like .02 gallons. 🤣
