Considering a Christmas trip to WDW: anyone else?

Insurance stuff confuses me. I specifically went to CAA to purchase extra travel insurance to cover for covid beyond my work plan travel coverage. I felt like that should be okay but now I'm second guessing it.

It *should* be but look at your policy, I purchased CAA and it specifically states it covers 'avoid non-essential travel' recommended countries provided the reason is covid-19 and you have at least 1 dose (you get higher $ protection if you are fully vaccinated)

I would call both your work policy and CAA to ask and find out. At least for your peace of mind.

Federal government just announced to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada. This will stay in place for 4 weeks.

Well, that's a lot less than I thought they'd do. My trip for next week might be back on...will look at the implications for insurance.

Sounds exactly like my policy EXCEPT I just confirmed that #8 in general exclusions states the exact opposite of what you just said. ☹
Edit: after freaking out a little bit, I saw (not in the policy documents I was given but in the email!) That the online policy endorsement covers covid during level 3 "avoid non essential travel". That just took years off my life, I think.

We called manulife and they don’t seem to know anything at this point. Will try again tomorrow morning but thinking for $400 we were quoted the caa policy would be a good back up plan B.

I also have the Manulife insurance. If you get an answer can you please post and I will do the same?

Unless my travel insurance won’t cover me I’m going! We are ’retired’ ‘broken’ on permanent disability so a 2 week quarantine is no big deal for us! In my opinion all of us are triple vaxed and I’m probably safer down there in the sunshine and outside then I am here stuck inside! My mental health needs this! Life is short……. I’ve followed the rules all along but I don’t feel it’s any more dangerous in the us then it is here!

Looking at their numbers tells for sure that it is WAY more dangerous in the US than it is here. Many times more (even after accounting for the difference in population). Canada new cases yesterday (2,577). US new cases yesterday (116,892). US has approximately 8.5x our population. If they were on par with us for infection rates based on population, then there would be more like 22,000 new cases there yesterday.

We called too and it was a non-answer. They should have this down pat by now. This is 2 years into this for crying out loud. 65 mins I’ll never get back 🙄

What’s the CAA policy. I’ve started hunting insurance again. Sigh.

Hi there,

I just got off with manulife and the very nice man said that we are still covered as it’s a specific “Covid 19” policy. We read the policy line by line and this is the sections he explained in detail - section 8 number 25 -

“Anyactofterrorismoranymedicalconditionyousufferorcontract when an official travel advisory issued by the Government of Canada states, "Avoid all non-essential travel" regarding the country, region or city of your destination, before your effective date.
To view the travel advisories, visit the Government of Canada Travel site. For claims due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), this exclusion does not apply. Exception: Treatment for Coronavirus (COVID-19) and related complications that you suffer or contract while you are on a cruise or any destination included in your cruise itinerary is not covered if you have not received the vaccine.
This exception does not apply to children 11 years old or younger who are not eligible to receive the vaccine, when travelling with at least one parent or guardian on the same cruise booking who has received the vaccine.
For claims not due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), this exclusion does
not apply if your medical condition is unrelated to the travel advisory.”

He stated that based on this, we are covered for medical expenses.
We then reviewed another section for coverage of quarantine costs, and again he ensured we would be covered. I was tempted to record him 😂

Finally got through to OTIP and medical including Covid-related expenses are covered as normal so that covers everyone except DH who is not on my plan. No trip interruption, but we don’t have flights or anything to worry about, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

However: if I stay in Ontario, pretty much everything I do will be indoors. If I go to Orlando, most of what I do will be outdoors, which will help to reduce transmission.

Honestly, I don't know what the right answer is.

There is no right answer for everyone. Every family’s individual risks and circumstances will be different.
The government wants you to be cautious, they did not issue a level 4 travel warning.
Anyway. I agree with you.

I don't think you can look at it carte blanche like that. There will be areas in both countries that are more safe and less safe.

Do you know what level travel advisory it is for the States? I am trying to find that info on the Government of Canada travel advisory website but can't figure it out.

I am going over the Covid 19 frequently ask questions section on the Manulife website. It states under travel restrictions when travelling out of province, it says that if the Government of Canada issues a level 3 or 4 travel advisory (we are now at level 3) the travel restriction exclusion applies. By chance, did the agent you spoke to touch on this? My husband has been on hold for over an hour trying to get an answer to this.

Unfortunately no I did not reference the website. We only reviewed the policy itself. Darn I thought we were in the clear 😩
