Our church offers a free in-house Christmas card delivery service between Thanksgiving and Christmas. They tweens and youth groups sponsor it, and this year they have been inundated with cards to deliver. I peeked in the sorting room yesterday and there were hundreds and hundreds of cards yet to be delivered!

One cool side story on that: It has come to my attention that many people are using this delivery service as a way to send cash anonymously to other families in the church who are out of work or otherwise under financial stress. There is a whole lot of joy going on here right now.

That is so wonderful! What an "extra" to come out of that delivery service that was already a great idea!

Did y'all ever notice that the same folks (IRL of course, I would never talk about anyone on the DIS ;) ) who have a problem with religion have no problem whatsoever believing in Global Warming? :upsidedow

Just saying....:rolleyes1

What I thought was funny was seeing someone say recently that their high temps were due to global warming. umm can you say WEATHER? Yep, it changes!

Actually, I have been in this thread for several years, have been a conservative for forty years and been an atheist for even longer.
You assume that because I am not a Christian I cannot be a conservative. What does that say about you?

ford family

me too what ford family said.

We're keeping both of you!

I am Christian, but I Have that whole auto bailout thing going against me, and no one has kicked me to the curb here! *I'm still 100 percent against the giant insurance bailout, though*

It is beautiful. I love snow. It is particularly beautiful since I don't have to go out in it. We made it to the grocery store yesterday when there was only an inch on the ground and the roads were just wet. I picked up bread for sandwiches, and frozen stuff that can go in the toaster oven if the weight of the snow takes out trees or branches, which in turn take out the power. The gen can run the toaster oven, but can't run the range. :thumbsup2 Well it CAN, but only if that is the only thing it is running, and we kinda like being able to have the well pump and lights on.

The only sad part is that we were supposed to be doing the Great Baking Extravaganza today and tomorrow, and that isn't gonna happen. My best friend absolutely does NOT drive in snow, and my mother isn't crazy enough to cross the Narrows (and the Purdy bridge and sandspit, not to mention twisty curvy crazy Hwy 302) to get to my house. Can't imagine why not. Haha...

Snow when you can stay home is always the prettiest! I love the pictures you've taken from your "front? back?" door. Your trees are sooo tall! I thought Michigan had tall pine trees. Yours are much taller!

ON the same subject... anyone miss me? WOO HOOO I was at work! Doing... WORK THINGS! Met a bunch of the staff, cleaned out my room. I'll haul stuff in tomorrow, but the way it is looking we'll be having a SNOW DAY tomorrow! LOL One day of work and I'll probably have tomorrow off, then Christmas break. It was SOO Nice to be working today! We have maybe two paychecks of mine going back into "catch up", then we can throw the rest into savings and paying off a few very minor credit cards. Oh I want my savings account back!

happyhappyjoyjoy!

In the pictures, Max is standing on the front deck, then the first picture of the snow on the trees if from the front deck looking down my driveway. The third picture, of the big toy, is from my back deck.

And I'm so happy we're missing you because you are WORKING!!! :cool1:

There's way too much cheer on this thread. Aren't y'all supposed to be miserable and bitter, at least for the next four years?? :teeth:

Darn it all, I keep forgetting the bitter part? Makes you wonder if being bitter has NOTHING to do with your political preference and everything to do with you as a person, eh?
:thumbsup2

I have got major post-The Christmas Sweater depression. I wish we were having an encore somewhere in MS because I'd be there again tonight!

There is an encore at our theater. I am feeling a heck of a lot better, too. I am so tempted to go..

What would I know? I'm just a hateful bigot (well, according to someone on another thread. :rolleyes1 )

Good news update::: My friend has decided to forego the Orlando conference in January. Looks like it'll be just me, which is the next best thing to having DW go with me.

On a related topic, what is the shortest lead time anyone here has had for a trip to WDW. The reason I ask is that the stars have aligned (kids staying with grandparents for a few days, enough money in the bank, job responsibilities not critical this weekend, shopping is done) so the DW and I could -repeat COULD -take off and go to WDW tomorrow for a few days and come back Christmas Eve.
I know that sounds crazy, but every once in a great while we'll take a notion and do something romantically spur of the moment like that. I must admit it would be a doozy even for us. Eh, it probably won't happen but it's fun to think about.

We didn't try to stay at the resorts, but one time DH & I decided to surprise DD with a stop on the trip back from Miami. We had been on a 7 day live a board sail boat cruise scuba diving. It was the last thing she expected, but it was a blast.

Michelle, no, we got almost two feet of snow here and we're expecting more so I'm not missing it. :rotfl:

Michelle, no, we got almost two feet of snow here and we're expecting more so I'm not missing it. :rotfl:

There's two feet of snow in Southern California???? :faint: That's where you are, isn't it? Or am I losing it?

OMG I'll have to call my friend Laura and tell her. She's from Laguna Beach, and when our weather gets crappy she always whines that she wants to go home.

I just got a phone call (recorded) from the district superintendent, telling me school is canceled for tomorrow too. Nawww.....ya think?

OK so I totally cried last night at Glenn's show...it is playing at theatres again tonight so if you missed it....I highly recommend going to see it tonight. Yes, I cried...alot. The whole audience did. Especially at the very end, all you could hear through out the theatre were sniffles. Man, that has to be one emotionally exhausting show to put on. I just wanted to give him a huge hug at the end of the show.

I came into work at 5am this morning, gotta leave early. DH goes before the board today for an AGR slot on base. I've been praying relentlessly for weeks in the hopes that he gets it. We need it SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. He's applied for so many civilian jobs, and hasn't gotten a single interview in 3 months, even for the jobs where they specifically wanted someone with military background, and law enforcement....he's a police officer in the military-how much more perfect of a fit do they want?? This would be the BEST Christmas present we could receive this year.

I'll have to share it when I get home, but DH decided to play with Jacob and the camera yesterday and took the cutest picture of him...He's still so tiny he fits inside our stockings, so that is where he put him. Jacob seemed to actually like it. Guess he was digging the soft furry feeling of it. He cried when he took him out. haha!
Oh, please share the picture when you can! I'm so glad that you and Soarin loved The Christmas Sweater so much. I really want to see it and I'm glad to read that it may come to video.

Well, let me preface my post by saying that, I am a singer. I have been trained and have been performing since I was 5, so I'm probably far more critical than the average viewer.

I thought she looked beautiful, and had fantastic stage presence. She complimented Glenn wonderfully, and she has a brilliant voice. The only thing that I didn't care alot for was some of the long drawn out vocal runs that she did from time to time. I prefer keeping things (traditional songs at least) very close to original melody and not "fixing something that isn't broken". I have the same issues with people messing with the Star Spangled Banner. I think keeping it a little more on the simple side would have been better, especially for "until we meet again" and "oh child why do you run", two of the most poignant moments in the show.
I don't like that either. Just sing the song as it was written.

Zip - this is so cool. You must be a great Pastor. Your church is lucky.

Zipp: That is a great idea that your church is doing that. What a neat idea. I also noticed that our Angel Tree was pretty much devoid of angels the first service it was up. It made me feel good that in these hard times, people still want to give, still want to help.

I just read the Rick Warren thread, your comment made so much sense. My dear stepdad (minister who is liberal to a fault God Bless him) says "mega church" like its a dirty word. I mean what is the problem with large churches with some people? Seems to be the Reverend Wright was preaching to a very large crowd. I don't see any of those people on the os screaming about that mega church.

You can say what you want about Rick Warren, but the guy isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and isn't afraid to go out on a limb.

I think Obama made a wise choice. And a very deliberate one.

My goodness some of those people on the os really do hate Christians with such a passion. Oh well, they don't know what they are missing.

Okay, I am really going to get something done today!
I have not read the Rick Warren thread - the only thing I know is that he'll be at the Inaugeration (sp?). I like Rick Warren and I think Obama is wise to have him there. What is getting people's panties in a wad over Rick Warren? (maybe I don't want to know?)

We drove 90 miles to Jackson to see it, since Mississippi was only showing it in two theaters (Jackson and Biloxi, I think). I certainly hope I can get it on DVD so my mom can see it. I went with my dad and I could tell he had a really good time. :goodvibes I don't think I stopped crying the whole time. Glenn had just grabbed hold of my emotions and wouldn't let them go! I wasn't the only one crying, I heard sniffles across the entire theater! Being the emotional individual I am, I started crying the moment Glenn walked out on stage- silly to say, but I was so glad to see him!:lovestruc I absolutely loved how he acted the story out- he is definitely a gifted actor! I think my favorite part has to be when he got to the part about Eddie passing through the storm- I cried the whole time because I thought about myself and how many times I too have passed through the storm. The lady who sang was also amazing- her voice was stellar!! She was a perfect accompaniment to Glenn and the story. When the show ended everyone in the theater clapped and cheered (even though we were in a movie theater). The girl who gave us our tickets commented she'd never heard of The Christmas Sweater so I told her about it. I wish Jackson was showing an encore tonight- I'd so go back!!!!:goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes Plus going to see Glenn was good for my dad as well- we never spend time together so the show gave us a chance to talk and spend some time just the two of us ( we ended up going out to eat afterwards and discussed The Christmas Sweater- my dad adamantly swore he really enjoyed it).:) I am just so thankful I got to see Glenn perform his beautiful story- I would not have missed it for anything in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This sounds so wonderful. I really want to read the book.

Ahhh, m'dear, you catch on fast.:thumbsup2 How right you are.

Of course I'm sure you guys know about what basically is a "pleasure tax" I'll call it- Obama taxing any item that people take pleasure in or use for fun. Movies, candy, music (ITUNES CARDS- this one really P.O.'s me since I have prolly spent $500 in iTunes money over the past two years), anything we use for fun, all to provide more money for welfare. :sad2: I told my mom that's what you get when a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT gets in office. I just hope he's GONE in 2012- maybe Glenn Beck can run the country.;)
I read about that pleasure tax too and what's this about taxing all sodas except DIET sodas? I heard it was for our own good health because much of America is obese.

Hey, steady with the sweeping generalisation, some of us don't believe in either religion or global warming..... but still believe in strong conservative values.

ford family
Totally!!!

Good news update::: My friend has decided to forego the Orlando conference in January. Looks like it'll be just me, which is the next best thing to having DW go with me.
I'm so glad Zip. What a relief.

Definitely do it! A few weeks ago, I surprised my wife with a very last minute trip to Manhattan after she saw one of our favorite restaurants on TV and mentioned how much she missed our old life there during this time of the year. That was on Friday morning and by Friday afternoon, I booked 3 nights and got reservations at the very restaurant she was talking about. When we got home from work that day, I told her we were leaving in the morning and she flipped! Since then, I've been promoted to "superstar" status around the house, even higher, for once, then the kids and our 2 dogs! The only thing better than the anticipation of a trip is no anticipation at all.
You're man of the year LOG!!! Good for you!

I'm not because in five weeks I'll be back down there working at WDW so I can go to the parks whenever I want!

Having the whole family together, jostling through the throng in World Showcase on New Year's Eve.
Priceless!

Oh I am so jealous of all of you who will be at WDW or DL for the holidays. Awesome!!!!!
http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/19448/

I CANNOT believe that this is what schools are calling a holiday concert.... :sad2:
I am SO GLAD my kids go to a Catholic school. What part of the country did this happen in?

Alas, that dream is going to have to be on hold. DW and I can't just quite seem to drop everything at the last minute right now. :upsidedow
Oh bummer - I'm so bummed for you. When doors close, windows open. Let's hope that's the case.
Hey Tink, you're missing out on lotsa snow. I know you're heartbroken.

Honugirl, how much do you have now? It's 25* over here and it has been snowing hard off and on all day. We have something life six inches on the ground out there now. It looks really strange inside my house today, because my skylights are buried under six inches of snow. Here's a few pics. Sorry, I would have taken more interesting pictures with my kids playing in it, but they refuse to go back out there. :lmao: They went out, got cold, came back in for cocoa, and are DONE with it for today. You do get to see Max, though. Max loves snow.

YAY!!! I am so happy for you!!!!:yay:

There's way too much cheer on this thread. Aren't y'all supposed to be miserable and bitter, at least for the next four years?? :teeth:
I'm bitter that my kids ate all my pierogies. Darn them kids.

Hello Cons!!! Hope all is well.

Okay I'll confirm to my liberal lurking friends that maybe I am a little dense, (hi lurkers!!!) but today I was at the dealership haggling about a car and I had to wait a bit. Obama was on the TV and I was listening to him talk about the economy. After he talked for about 15 minutes, I mumbled, "what the heck is he saying?" because, honestly, I truly didn't understand him. He talked in circles, was incredibly vague and really didn't answer any questions he was asked.

Anyway, I mumbled "what the heck is he saying" and I didn't realize there was someone behind me when I said it. "Beats the Hell out of me" was his reply. He's an Obama supporter who voted for him - he didn't want another 4 years of Bush. I just smiled and nodded.

Hi all, happy Thursday. I had a weird dream this morning. I dreamt I was at the Studios in WDW and went to get a FastPass for Toy Story Mania. They were out, so we got in a 40 minute line. My dad somehow got separated from us, so my mom and I were stuck waiting in an empty plaza and would be the next group to enter the building. :confused3 Then they send us to the building, and in front of us is a rock climbing wall with ropes, and we're told we have to scale the wall to make it to the last part of the line. I started saying I had a bad back and couldn't scale the wall, so they wouldn't let us ride. My dad reappears later and says we didn't have to scale the wall, the rope was going to pull us up on its own once we held on. Then we realized we'd forgotten to make ADRs for the Brown Derby and we ran over there in a panic. And then I woke up.

Anyone wanna psychoanalyze that for me? :rotfl2:

Hey...guess what I did today? I got my hair done at a salon. I got highlights done. I've never had anything other than a cut or a perm done, and the lady there was so excited to do something fun with my hair. She did a great job, and gave me a great deal. I was there for 2-1/2 hours! My DD thinks it looks good, so if it gets her approval, that's a good thing! It was fun.
Woo-hoo! Glad you got to have a good treat for yourself, Deb.

OK so I totally cried last night at Glenn's show...it is playing at theatres again tonight so if you missed it....I highly recommend going to see it tonight. Yes, I cried...alot. I haven't seen the show, so I have no idea what she sounds like, but I agree with what you're saying. I don't like it when people try to "personalize" classic songs, such as the National Anthem. I'm one of those gals who goes to a lot of sporting events, so I've suffered through some real hack jobs over the years. Sing it as it was written. Period.

This is a beef I have with the church I attend. They very rarely sign hymns, and usually when they do, they feel the need to "reinterpret" them to make them more modern. My eye starts to twitch within five minutes flat usually. The Christmas choir concert they had recently was no exception. They changed some songs so much I couldn't even recognize them. Blah. :sad2:

Soarin, that is so cool you got to see Christmas Sweater. I love Glenn Beck! Blest, I have gotten very few Christmas cards this year, I think a lot of people aren't sending them anymore. It gets so time consuming and expensive. Heck, at .42 per card to just mail it, that's some serious money right there. I went ahead and sent them, but only to people that really matter. And I got very lovely, very religious, Christmas cards. I am sure my one friend delivered a great big eye roll my way since she finds religious cards at Christmas annoying. I may never know, she hasn't spoken to me since before the election when she walked by my house and saw my McCain sign. :rolleyes1
Now that's mature. Some friend. :sad2:

What a great idea! And how heartening as well.

I just read the Rick Warren thread, your comment made so much sense. My dear stepdad (minister who is liberal to a fault God Bless him) says "mega church" like its a dirty word. I think Obama made a wise choice. And a very deliberate one.
I haven't read the thread, but I'm probably guilty of saying mega church like it's a dirty word myself. I have nothing against them, and I think it's great so many people find the same church apealing. I just personally wouldn't want to attend one. I like a big church, but not a mega-church. But all of my thoughts on the matter are due to what's happening now at the church I've gone to since I was a baby. They are really pushing towards becoming a mega-church. They're not even building our sanctuary as promised; they're building practically a danged stadium, complete with tiered seating and theater-style seats. I'm not happy about it at all. But anyway. :headache:

Did y'all ever notice that the same folks (IRL of course, I would never talk about anyone on the DIS ;) ) who have a problem with religion have no problem whatsoever believing in Global Warming? :upsidedow

Just saying....:rolleyes1
Some folks are like this, yes. I have a friend like this, actually. She thinks people are stupid to follow religion, but if anyone asks even a question about global warming "proof" she goes off like you're calling her mother a name. :rotfl: [Needless to say, we don't talk about politics if we can help it! :rotfl: ]

If you haven't read Coulter's book Godless, there's a good section on global warming and how we are expected to believe it without question as if it were a religion, while some of those same people think we're stupid for believing in God.

What would I know? I'm just a hateful bigot (well, according to someone on another thread. :rolleyes1 )

I honestly want to strangle that girl 99.9% of the time (and she's almost 17!).
Ah, another reason why I am glad I'm an only child. :rolleyes1

I dunno what sounds worse to me: Fighting the crowds in WS on NYE, or having the whole family together. :rotfl:

me too, but i always add information like, "get fast pass for safari" or "last nemo show at ...." and in november, i definitely avoid the super soap weekend at dhs. gad zooks that's a frightening thing! :scared:
