Confessions of a reluctant runner, a DL 1/2 & PHM PTR. 7/5 race recaps and final thoughts

Go figure. I haven't updated since the 21st! I really thought I had done an update last week.

Senior moment!

I was really expecting to have a lot more free time over the holiday break but I guess the good news is that I was surprisingly productive at the office.
I probably shouldn't have bothered but that’s a story for another day.

Sigh.

Anywhoo here we go!

Training wise it has been an ok couple of weeks. While I can’t say the ankle is really better, or anywhere close to 100%, it’s not worse. Right now, I’ll take that. It’s different, which may be good, or not, but so far I still have a full green light with the caveat to not do anything stupid.

12/24, Christmas Eve, I did speedwork at the Gym. It went ok. 4x800 with my average pace ending at 8:18. That’s just under the top range for my plan which is that 2:03 finish but definitely over the sub 2 hour pace. I did notice the ankle though. Could be the treadmill, could just be going faster.

12/26. I decided to skip this run. I was supposed to do a 4 mile tempo run but given how the ankle felt on xmas eve, it seemed best to rest it.

12/28. 8 mile long run. Goal was a pace between 9:39-9;55. Happy to report this came in at a soggy 9:29 pace.

12/29. Saw PT/Chiro. General consensus was the mobility is actually a bit better and since running really doesn’t seem to make it worse, I can keep going.

12/30. Foam rolled the snot out of my left leg. Seriously. I must have spent 10 minutes on that calf!

12/31. Saw PT/Chiro who noticed improvement again. Ugh, that means foam rolling really works. Did speedwork at the gym. 3x1600. Goal was a pace between 8:24-8:40. Came in at 8:29.

1/2. 5 mile tempo run. Goal was a pace between 8:54-9:15. Came in at 9:01. I have to admit. This sucked worse than the speedwork. I decided it’s a mind game. The speedwork and tempo runs suck so much that you look forward to the long ones and they seem easy. I am being brainwashed!

1/4. 10 mile long run. Goal was a pace between 9:39-9:55. Happy to report this came in at a soggy 9:42 pace. Felt the ankle quite a bit after but 3 hours in compression socks and I have to admit, it feels a ton better! I tried a new fuel at the 5 mile mark and BLEH! It tasted ok but once again, major sugar rush which just makes me feel icky till it settles down. I would really love to find something that didn’t have the sugar but had electrolytes and caffeine and I don’t think it exists. I’ll stick to my margarita blocks I think. I did have one of my squeezable fruits after the run and OH was that lovely! I may have to pack some and put in my checked bag for the race. They do give you a box of food of course but this was SOOO nice!

I may have had an AHA compression sock moment. Jeff and I had a lovely date night last night. I am SO tired of flat shoes, I decided to hear a heeled boot. But, my ankle felt decidedly unstable so I wore compression socks instead of boot socks. Not only did it feel much better but this morning, my ankle felt better than it has in almost 2 months. VERY exciting.

I did do some trip planning over the past 2 weeks!

:cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

PHM trip planning

1. We booked some FP's! They are largely placeholders and certainly subject to change but I'm glad to have them on the books.

2. Ann and I spent, no joke, almost 50 minutes on the phone with member services getting our 3 reservations linked so that we would not have to move rooms. Apparently each ressie has to match exactly! To the . at the end of a middle initial, phone numbers all of it. But, it is done! And I can even "see" it worked as we now have only 1 magic band order instead of 3. YAY for that.

3. I spent yesterday figuring out how our costumes will go together and feel like we have a better plan that should be relatively easy to execute and be comfy!

4. I ordered some new shorts for the costume. I was REALLY warm at the 12K I ran in my black knickers. Granted, that could have been the race legs I had on but it was not warm out so it’s a bit concerning. We will see if they work.

5. I ordered a new tank for the costume as the color of the one I’d previously bought was not right at all. Sadly, it arrived and it wasn’t right either. Still working on this one!

6. I booked a massive spa appointment for the day after the PHM. 80 minutes of pure bliss in the form of a sports massage.

7. I put together a budget! I had to see if I could really afford that spa appointment after I booked it lol.

8. I started my pack list.

And........Some Spring Break Trip Planning!

It's official, we have plane tickets! We are headed to Hawaii for spring break. I feel a bit like a traitor, we are flying Hawaiian both ways, the price just couldn't be beat. While I won't get my 2 free bags each way, we will all get a full meal each way so that's kind of nice.

1 night in Waikiki and then 5 at Aulani.

Major happy dance!

In 49 days I get to run through a castle!

Just not this one

Yep, I finally got my DL half pictures. I wish you could see more castle and I was actually the focus of either picture but hey, at least I am smiling!

Last but not least, keep Ann in your thoughts. She tweaked her knee on Thursday and is scheduled to run the WDW 1/2 next Saturday.

I'm glad the ankle felt better after wearing the compression socks.

I'm glad you got some trip planning done over the last couple of weeks. I can't wait to see the outfits for costumes. Glad you finally got your ressies linked.

How exciting about Hawaii. :)

Keeping good thoughts going for Ann.

Just joining in! I'm a runner-hater who just recently started to enjoy running a little. When I was younger, I forced myself to run and even ran a couple of 5 Ks. The difference was I hated every minute of it. Now I actually enjoy the feeling, although I have never passed 5 miles or so...I always feel like that is still enough. :) :happytv:

Looking forward to catching up on the rest of your review. I just read the first several posts to get started. :)

We were there at DL for the run in late August 2014, but we were bystanders, not runners.

Glad the ankle is finally feeling better!

You've made a lot of trip planning and running progress!

Hawaii for spring break sounds awesome! I'll be super jealous!

It really did!

Oh my goodness the linking was crazy!

I am very excited for Hawaii, wish it was sooner, I am SO chilled today. It's a dreary drippy day here.

:welcome:

5 miles is enough! The bulk, if not all actually, of my "normal" runs are in the 4-5 mile range, it's a nice distance and time spent out without a huge commitment. I can't say I enjoy it most of the time but it doesn't always suck and I figure that's good enough. I mean going to the gym isn't something I really enjoy either, but it has to get done.

There are occasional zen moments for sure.

It was interesting to me to see how downplayed it was in the parks with folks wearing (or not) their medals and t's. It will be interesting to compare it to a WDW run experience.

Glad the ankle is finally feeling better!

I wouldn't go so far as to say truly better. It's just not worse if that makes sense.

You've made a lot of trip planning and running progress!

Yes, it was some good planning over break, helped distract me over some work crankiness.

Ok... well, then I'm glad your ankle isn't any worse! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Congratulations on getting spring break in Hawaii on the books. That looks like a nice little break.

I hope Ann recovers in time for her race.

Your times are awesome - for everything - the tempo, the long, and the speed work. Way to go. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I'm working tonight. I hope to run on the treadmill tomorrow when I leave. Then I hope that I can run outside on Weds. I know - crazy back to back, but both days are iffy. Then I won't run again until this weekend. I was thinking 8 miles. I'm totally off my calendar now and I don't give a &*$#. I'm just going day by day and I bought yet another pair of running shoes.

The pair I liked so much on Saturday - well - I decided they are too tight in the toe box. I don't know what I was thinking. Well, actually what happened was I tried them on with my current inserts. But when I put the NEW inserts in they are just too tight period.

So I was at Kohls yesterday (to use up my kohls cash) and found the one hidden pair of Asics gel Kayanos marked down to $110 and then I had $50 in Kohls cash. How could I go wrong for $60? Even if I don't use them for the race, I have them as back up. Now I just have to drive 60 minutes to the beach to return the other pair. :faint: Yeah - stupid. But I did buy a growler at a local brew pub down there and now that I made that investment in the glass bottle, I can at least get it filled up. :rolleyes1

Great to hear the news about your ankle, but sorry to hear about Ann.

Great news on the plans, and even better about Aulani! I just booked five nights in Hawaii tonight, but not for me. :lmao: Point rental went really fast! I signed the contract yesterday, and boom! rented today! :lmao:

It's nice when your plan comes together and getting a meal on the flight is a good thing. That's a long flight!

Glad the ankle is okay and the plans sound like they are beginning to shape up!! Yay for Hawaii!!!

Ok... well, then I'm glad your ankle isn't any worse! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Hey, at my age, you take what you can get! Sometimes not worse is a really good thing!

Congratulations on getting spring break in Hawaii on the books. That looks like a nice little break.

I am excited. I REALLY hope the kids aren't bored, that's the million dollar question.

Me too!!!!

Your times are awesome - for everything - the tempo, the long, and the speed work. Way to go. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Well, the speed work might not be so great as it is treadmill based :rotfl: but I am doing everything at a .5% incline and going to up it to 1%.

I am scared to go much faster as I may truly fall off.

8 is fine! You've already gone high enough, everything else honestly is gravy and keeping a consistent routine is really all you need I think. Back to back is ok as long as it isn't too many miles, I think. I've done it, just don't want to if one is a long run! My plan actually calls for back to back speedwork then tempo. Which kind of makes sense as the speedwork is short miles wise. Though, if I really did the 20 min warm up or 10 min cool down that they suggest. If I do end up doing treadmill for both for the next 6 weeks it will probably be back to back.

Though the idea of 6-8 miles on the treadmill makes my skin crawl. In theory I'd end up with the following left to do on the treadmill. So really, just 4 totally nightmarish ones. I do think I will bail out of work early or go in late for at least a couple of them.

This week
6x400
6 mile tempo
6 long run (outside)

Next
3x1600
4 mile tempo
10 long run (outside)

Week 6
4x800
8 mile tempo
8 long run (outside)

Week 7
6x400
6 mile tempo
10 long run (outside)

Week 8

4x1600
8 mile tempo
12 long run (outside)

Week 9
3x800
3 mile tempo
6 long run (outside)

Week 10

4x400
2 mile tempo
PHM!

Week 8 SUCKS. It is also my Vegas trip week. UGH!

The pair I liked so much on Saturday - well - I decided they are too tight in the toe box. I don't know what I was thinking. Well, actually what happened was I tried them on with my current inserts. But when I put the NEW inserts in they are just too tight period.

That's what happened to me with the NB 890's. I may try on the mens version at the expo but they were just too narrow and too shallow.

That's what Jeff run in and loves them. YAY for a growler refil.

:rotfl:

Great to hear the news about your ankle, but sorry to hear about Ann.

Me too, I really hope it gets better for her!

Great news on the plans, and even better about Aulani! I just booked five nights in Hawaii tonight, but not for me. :lmao: Point rental went really fast! I signed the contract yesterday, and boom! rented today! :lmao:

WOW! Who did you rent through? I really considered trying to rent or transfer some extra points so we could do a 2 bedroom but we will be fine.

You guys need to get out there, it's magical!

It's nice when your plan comes together and getting a meal on the flight is a good thing. That's a long flight!

It is, not any worse than FL though. I usually buy a meal unless it's a really late flight. Then again if it's a late flight I get upgraded so the meal is free.

:rotfl:

Glad the ankle is okay and the plans sound like they are beginning to shape up!! Yay for Hawaii!!!

Thanks Rosie! And yes, YAY for Hawaii!

Hawaii for spring break?? 5 nights at Aulani! That's fantastic! I love it when a plan comes together.

Glad you're feeling better.
Hope Ann is feeling better.

Spring break in Hawaii? I'm totally envious!

Your week 8 looks INSANE! OMG! Not a chance I could do that.

It is so freaking cold here today. I am off, but I think between the snow still on the road/sidewalks and the cold temps and predicted winds I am going to have to run on my treadmill again today. UGH! Too many treadmills runs. I have GOT to get outside on Saturday.

Unfortunately she had to work like a crazy person before leaving and that didn't really help matters. Hoping she can rest it up before Saturday.

Spring break in Hawaii? I'm totally envious!

I want to go NOW! Lol.

Your week 8 looks INSANE! OMG! Not a chance I could do that.

I have been dreading it since I picked the plan. I don't mind the 12 so much, it's the 8 mile tempo run!

My week is so wacky I'm not really sure what to do. I was going to do my speedwork last night at the gym but Jeff has been fighting something off and didn't want to go and he didn't have to twist my arm very hard.

Tonight Eric has scouts and Evan maybe has pep band. Scheduling around those pick up and drop offs is always a little challenging. I really should have just gone on my own. Lame!

Friday's tempo is either going to have to be at the gym after I take Eric to the ferry or I'll have to miss a little work. Sunday's will have to be later than I'd like as I have to go pick up Eric from camp and won't be back until 1 or later. I really prefer the long run before I eat

Six weeks from now, I will have run through a castle. Again!

Actually six weeks from now I may well be waking up and not wanting to move and wondering what the heck did I do to my body? Again.

LOL!

It really is starting to get real.

It's been a pretty good week here training wise. My ankle has continued to improve. It isn’t 100% but it is markedly better. This of course means that PT has decided to morph from Physical Therapy into more Personal Trainer or really Personal Torture. Like, seriously. Squats and Lunges. All under the guise of strengthening my ankle and….well, my toes. It’s a rather fascinating thing, arguably only to me but apparently toes are really supposed to move in a way that mine do not. Poor Jeff is still sidelined with his knee and is a bit down about it. Which I can relate to completely.

I had fun tracking lots of friends this weekend who were doing the WDW 5K, 10k, half or full marathon. Some crazy people did them all. I am even happier to say Ann's knee held out and she had a GREAT race, with a PR (personal record) and is now officially faster than me! They had perfect weather for running (in my opinion), I can only hope for that for Princess. It’s a funny time of year as most of you know, I'll be bringing lots of options as a result. We could be freezing at the start line, or melting. Basically, we need to pack for 30-80. Ah, Florida in Feb.

I am SO ready for vacation. Work ended on a bit of a sucky note for 2014 and while I am mostly over it, there is a slight disgruntledness that lingers. I am not generally a disgruntled person so I need to knock that out of my system sooner rather than later. Of course, this doesn't mean it has translated into a transference of energy at home. My tree still isn't down! It is mostly de-decorated but I have a relighting project that likely needs to commence and well, between kids and running/training, there really wasn't a whole lot of free time this weekend.

I officially completed week 4 of my training plan. Not quite halfway there.

Here is how it shook out.

Wednesday: Did speedwork intervals on the treadmill, 6x400. I had double checked my target pace and thought I was on track. However, in my classic dyslexic way I transposed a couple of numbers. Goal was 7:44-8:08. I came in at 7:50. Not quite at that low end of the range but inching closer.

Thursday and Friday were PT days. Due to kids scheduling and the fact that it is dark before and after work, I was not able to do my tempo run on Friday. This meant for an interesting weekend for me.

Saturday: Went to the gym to be a good girl and do all my PT stuff. Then did a 6 mile tempo run. Goal of 8:54-9:15. Came in at 9:03. I was actually quite happy with this. Though it wasn't quite the lower number it was probably the fastest run of that distance I've ever done, that wasn't an actual race. I have done that pace in a race of that distance or longer, but only twice and both were quite some time ago.

Sunday: Got up early and ran another 6 miles. I have never done back to back runs like this before and wasn't happy about the idea at all but there really wasn't an alternative to get the runs in and stick to my plan. I really wasn't sure how it would go. Saturday had been soggy, today was foggy.

I had to get up early as the bulk of my day would be spent driving over to the peninsula to pick up Eric (and his cousins) from a mid winter church camp. Goal today was 9:39-9:55 so an easier run than the day before. I managed to come in at 9:28. Pretty happy about that.

None of this of course really means all that much come race day. The race conditions will be a huge factor in how fast or slow I am but if nothing else it does make me feel like this plan is helping me if even a little bit. Even if it isn't especially very fun and I am counting the days until I can be done with it. :lmao:

Specifically that means

6 more each speedwork, tempo and long runs. 6. I can do 6 more of anything right?

I have a decision to make this week. I am actually considering a local race in 2 weeks. I had sort of been planning to do it, or at least wanting to, and then the ankle happened. And then January happened. Which means really payment$$ for mid winter church camps, summer mission trips, a spring band trip and buying Aulani flights. The kitty is a bit low to be sure and a not super cheap race registration doesn't fit terribly well into that scenario. I had made peace with it. But then, Thursday and Friday, PT gave me hope. More than hope actually. That maybe it wasn't a horrible idea and a recipe for re-injury. Friday at the office I started to get some peer pressure from a coworker. Who, like me, had ruled it out but was now reconsidering. I'll find out today if he and his wife registered for it. If they did well, that might be the tipping point that pushes me over. IF I do, I am not exactly sure what the best option would be for training for the next 2 weeks.

My week is supposed to be 3x1600, a 4 mile tempo and then a 10 mile long run. I am not sure if 10 miles the weekend before a race is the best idea but at the same time, don’t want to deviate too much from the plan. I may cut it down to 6 or 8 on the long. IF I decide to do the race that is.

I want to

I don't want to

I want to

I don’t want to

It's sort of crazy

But maybe not

The craziest part of it is that a year ago I could never have imagined that less than 2 weeks before a half I could even contemplate signing up for one, not having trained for that specific one. That is crazy right there. Crazy to consider 2 half's that are a month apart. Especially when really, the farthest I've run since last Sept is 10 miles and that was only once. Yet, oddly enough I am considering it and somehow in denial about it being crazy.

Next week would be 4x800 and then an 8 mile tempo and an 8 mile long run. I can easily adjust this week to fit in the race and be ok. I'd likely to do a 3 mile easy run and then consider the race the tempo run and I'd be at the same total miles for the week.

While I didn't get a whole lot done this weekend other than taking all non tree decorations down, running kids around and running, I did get a short update up on the marching band TR. The update made me think of these pictures from the DL half, which make me smile.

Running through Carsland in the dark was AMAZING! So cool.

The funny thing is that I do NOT recall the bike being there. Bikes are pacers I think but not in a good way, they are at the back and sweep people who can’t keep up the time requirements. I am not sure if these guys were pacing us, going ahead to get into place or what? So weird. I am SO unobservant when I am running it is a bit concerning at times!

Registration for the DL half is coming up fairly soon. I would LOVE to do this race again. What I'd really love is to sign Eric up for the 10K and the then do Dumbo myself, so run the 10K with him and do the half the next day. I took a look at what that registration would cost and went

:scared1:

Nope. Not happening. Not this year!

I'm glad training has been good this week, despite the rain and the fog.

I somehow either never subscribed or lost my subscription to the DL TR, so I have now gone over there and subscribed and will read the whole thing tonight.

I like the foggy picture, it's pretty:thumbsup2
We've got lots of snow...I like it when it's falling, not so much once it's on the ground!
Funny you didn't notice the bike! You're in the zone!!

YAY for getting in some great training in the foggy soggy conditions. It looks lovely!

Six weeks to go. :thumbsup2

Way to go on your training! Glad to hear your ankle is doing ok. It is always a good sign with the PT moves from therapy to personal training mode. I joke around I have a love hate relationship with my PT. He loves to torture me, and I hate him. I have been struggling with outdoor miles. It has been so cold out here I cannot breathe. I had to do my 9.5 miles on the treadmill on Saturday. Will probably have to do my 10 indoors again this Saturday. We are expecting a high of 30. I need it to be at least 35 to be able to breathe.

Glad to hear your costume is coming along nicely! I don't think I will be wearing one this year. I hear you though on not knowing what to pack! The weather swings so much! Last year I think it was 60 degrees but felt like 87 with the humidity. Took me 3:35 to finish.........although I DID stop for every single character I saw after the 5 mile point.

I am starting to have my marathon anxiety. I had a dream last night I forgot my marathon bag on the plane. Yah know the one with my shoes, clothes etc. then got lost during the half! None of the CMs knew which way to get to the finish line!

Best of luck on the remainder of your training! It is getting so close!

I find this report very eye opening. There are so many concerns that I have never even known about. I'm glad youre able to get back into things and hopefully the PHM goes off without a hitch!
