My DD is flying to Cairo-via Turkey-tonight. We bought a converter/adapter on Saturday for her to charge her laptop in the airport in IST, but it claims that we should not use it on electronics. She has an adapter as well.

So my question is....how DOES one charge laptops/netbooks/PSPs etc in Europe/Africa?

My laptop and power source has a built-in converter - I just use a plug converter.

Most laptops have power cords that automatically convert the current, so all she'll need is an adapter. Turkey uses the European plug - 2 round prongs. (In general the same type of plug used in Egypt, though apparently they also use a grounded version that has clips, though regular 2 pin plugs will work.)

Remember...
Converter - changes the electrical current only
Adapter - changes the shape of the plug only

Check the "brick" or the rectangular box that should be part of her laptop power cord - it will list the voltages it conforms to. It probably says something like 110-240 volts.

Thanks so much! Since she has both, we can put the converter in her checked luggage, and just the adapter in her carry on.
