Let me tell you a bit about me. I'm a 33 yo mother of 3. I am about 5'3" & 180 lbs. After having my last child, 4 years ago, I was quite shocked when the weight didn't fall off. I mean really shocked. So, I thought I'd give it some time. A year later, it was still there. By this point, I'd already bought all new clothes & figured "Oh well, guess I'm fat." I never really did anything about it, just wondered why it was still there.

So, this past June some friends & I became fed up & decided to form a little support group. No real plan, just trying to move some & eat less. I tried watching FIT TV, but it did nothing for me. I considered trying some of the exercises they were doing, but that soft, couch was calling my name again. I've only lost 5 lbs since then.

We decided to kick it up a notch, since no one was really losing much weight. We now set a monthly goal & must pay $1.00 for every lb. we did not lose to meet our goal. For some silly reason, I set my goal at 5 lbs. Why I thought I could lose 5lbs in a month when it took me 3 lbs to lose the last 5lbs is beyond me.

Next, I joined the YMCA. I had my first orientation yesterday. What an exhausting expereince! You should have seen me! I was pulling, tugging, sweating. I jumped up & down, stretched as far as I could! I pulled & tugged & squeezed & cried. Then I jumped, I squirmed, I wiggled & rolled. I huffed, I puffed & sweated some more. Then finally, finally I was dressed & ready to head to the gym! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. :) The trainer demonstrated the weight equipment & then I demonstrated that I could use it. When I woke up this morning I could barely get my Tshirt on because my arms hurt so bad! Can you tell I'm not used to mych physical activity??

As far as diet, well, I'm going to try a few things first. When my children come home from school & I get out their after school snacks, I'm going to skip mine, cause I don't even go to school anyways! Also, when we are down to the last snack, I'm not going to eat it myself just to stop the "he aate the last one!' arguement. Yep, it's a sacrifice I must make. I bought some lean cuisine meals for my lunches, so that even saves the "what am I going to have for lunch?" mid-day stress. I'm also going to lay off of the Pop-Tarts for breakfast. I mean I had one this morning, but from this point on I'm going to lay off of them. I'm not going to try a real structured diet just yet. Too lazy to plan meals & I really, really love carbs!! So, we'll see how this goes.

Today I bought a Total Circuit Training DVD at Walmart. I'm going to try to put it in one day soon (not committing to a day yet) & see how it goes. I bought a ton of really cute gym clothes to help motivate me to move more.

Wish me luck! I'm going to have to take this weight off myself since it's obviously not going to just fall off!

Hi, MagicalMom! And welcome to the journey! So glad to have you along! I LOVE your writing style. :teeth:

I think your plan is a great one and very manageable! You may want to get the kids involved in planning some dinners with some guidance from you -- then you can all enjoy healthier meals together. And who says you can't share their afternoon snacks, as long as they are not oreos or something like that! :teeth: You may be surprised when they ask you for a cut up apple with some peanut butter for dipping! Or some celery with cream cheese & raisins or something like that.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice & encouragement Keenercam! It's so nice to see another from Delaware. :goodvibes I went ahead & tried the DVD for 20 minutes. It wasn't so bad. much easier to keep up with then the work-outs I've seen on FIT TV. I think I'll be able to do this a few times a week. I heading back to the YMCA tomorrow. My DS, 4 goes there for preschool 3 days a week, so I really have no excuse for not going now huh? I'm getting really excited!

Welcome MagicalMom! :wave2: You are headed in the right direction, sounds like you have a good plan in place!

Since I am hosting this month's Exercise Challenge, I guess it is my moral duty to try to recruit you... :goodvibes What you do it post on the thread how many minutes you want to exercise this week, and occasionally update the totals for all to see. Check it out! It is really a motivator to keep you working out.

Remember not to try to change too many things at once! It's SO much easier when you take baby steps! You can do it!!! :cheer2:

HI there and welcome! Sounds like you are off to a good start. I agree that too many changes at once can be overwhelming!!

Good luck!

Well, I did something pretty amazing today! :flower: When passing out the daily after school snacks, I accidently grabbed a nutty buddy for myself! Then I stopped & looked it over real good. I thought "MagicalMom, now after eating this how will you feel?" I looked at it closer. At one point I even began to put it in my pocket for "just in case I want it in a bit" but luckily it quickly occured to me that it would melt. I took one mmore look at that darn nutty Buddy & decided that it would probably void out all of the hard work I had done with that work out DVD today. Then I put it back in the box & admitted to myself that I actually wasn't even hungry. Amazing huh? :teeth:

As I said earlier, I did have a chocolate pop tart for breakfast. Just one, not two like I would usually do. (Never understood why kellogs packages them that way anyways! Unless they want you to eat both!)

For lunch I had chicken noodle soup with way to many crunched up saltines.
For dinner I had a healthy choice seasame chicken meal.
My snacks were pretzels & an english muffin w/ crunchy peanut butter.
I'm going to have to get used to the idea of drinking more water, never cared much for it really.

Now if I can just get the pain in my arms to stop from yesterdays workout, I'll be good to go! :cheer2:

You did so GREAT yesterday, MM! :cheer2: I am so happy that you beat back that nutty buddy temptation. Good for you!

So, what is the plan today? I know your arms are probably hurting from yesterday -- you might want to take a walk or do something else so you are working other parts of your body today instead of your sore arms. :)

I think your food from yesterday looks not bad at all. On WW, I bet it was less than 24 points and that is great!

BTW -- water gets easier to take once it becomes part of your routine. I love it with a lot of ice and a straw. You may also want to use crystal light non-caffeinated varieties for a glass or 2 a day to help you get the water in without calories or caffeine. WW says this is okay. Here at work, I keep bottled water in the freezer and take it out in the morning to sip on as it defrosts during the day (besides the insulated 20 oz mug I keep on my desk to drink). I promise myself that I will drink the 20 oz mug and 2 16 oz defrosting bottles before I leave work for the day. That gets me to 52 oz. Another glass or 2 at dinner and one the rest of the evening puts me way over the top for my daily water goal. It really isn't as much as it seems. I know our local grocery stores also sell non carbonated, calorie free waters that are flavored with natural fruit flavors and nothing else. Those are great to have on hand, even just to mix with regular water for some flavor.

Have another great day today! :sunny:

Welcome - I've been a bit busy to get journals but wanted to wish you welcome and hope that you keep coming back and updating your journal. I will read them as I can and commit as I can.

I think you have a good plan laid out. I wasn't much of a water drinker but now I can't stand it if I haven't had at least 56 ounces of water a day. When I'm home I use a larger glass so that I don't feel like I have so much to drink. At work I take a 40 ounce container and a 32 ounce container. I do pour them into a glass to drink and the 40 ounce takes me 2 1/2 glass to drink and the 32 takes me 2. That doesn't seem as bad as drinking from smaller glasses. For me it's definitely a mental picture thing.

Keep on
Chris

Well, on weekends I work 12 hours shifts & drive about an hour each way. I really don't have time to eat or exercise on weekends. I pretty much just drive home, fall asleep & get back up in the monring & do it all again. This morning I woke up feeling really exhausted from such a stressful weekend. Hoping DH & I can make it to the gym today. Maybe go out for a nice lunch since we are both off today.

Wecome to Wish! Looks like you're off to a great start. I started off at 180 too. I'm 160 now but hoping to lose another 10 before the Wine Festival! Thanks for sharing your tips. You've got a great group of motivated friends!

Welcome Magical Mom! :goodvibes
I started my wish journal in April of this year and I can say with the help of the girls on this board, I was able to lose 35 pounds! Some things I do are:
-Work out w/ cardio or weights 5 times a week-usually in the mornings
- lots of water or diet pepsi
-I'm really trying to just have one day off my diet..haven't really acheived that yet.
- parking very far away from store/restaurant entrances..makes me walk more so that's a good thing
- 100 calorie snack packs..they are a god send!
-ipod..really keeps me going!

Good luck! :cheer2:  :cheer2:

Hi,
Sounds like you are off to a great start. That nutty bar incident was a close call, but you did it. Keep up the good work.

~~Lynn :flower: ~~

Well, I'm still trying to get used to this water. I think I'm going to go out tomorrow & purchase a nice water bottle. Something cute, just to make water more enjoyable! :teeth: I think it might be easier to drink if it's in a bottle & not a cup.

Friday DH is off so he's heading to the gym with me. That should be fun. As long as we don't end up at Friendly's afterwards!

I'm dying top know if I've even lost a lb. but I no longer have a scale. I'm going to weigh myself at work on Friday. If I don't meet my 5 lb goal by the first Sunday in October I have to pay $5.00!

Stephanie, what is a 100 cal. snack pack?

I'll just keep trucking! :cheer2: :cheer2:

You will get used to the water, don't worry!

I hate to barge in on your question, but the 100 calorie snack packs are awesome! You can get them at your grocery store in the cookie aisle. Nabisco makes them (and I think Keebler does too) and they come in all kinds of flavors - Cinnamon Graham Cracker, Oreo, Wheat Thins, Chips Ahoy, etc. They are packed in single serving bags that are 100 calories each. They get rid of whatever craving you are having (salty or sweet) without totally ruining your eating plan for the day. I :lovestruc them, whoever invented them should win a Nobel Prize of some sort...

Sounds like you are doing great. Keep eating healthy and working out, you can do it!

AmyT

Welcome to WISH!

It sounds like you have a lot of support, which is such a great thing. Keep up the good work! You're making real progress!!!

Thanks Amy! I hoping to have to find some of those. Well, I feel like I've tried so,so hard only to discover that I lost 1 lb. Yep & You can hardly tell! LOL DH didn't even mention it! How rude. I'll just keep trying, not going to give up yet! :)

Whatever you do, don't give up!!! It took me 2.5 months to lose 2 lbs... I was eating all the right foods and exercising like a fiend, but my portion sizes were way too big. When I started measuring my food and putting everything on FitDay (I try to stay between 1200-1300 calories per day), those 2 lbs came off the first week!

YOU CAN DO IT! You just have to be patient - a 1-2lb loss per week is the healthy way to do it. Remember, it is a lifestyle change, not a diet! Keep it up! :cheer2:

Hi and welcome! Keep going!!

I like to add a slice of lemon to my water - adds a bit of flavor without anything artificial.

Well, I don't feel so bad about my 1lb weight loss after watching "The Biggest Loser" last night. If those poor girls can work so hard & only lose a lb. or 2, then I really can't complain huh? DH & I are heading to the gym as soon as he gets home. I'm glad we don't have a scale since he will probably lose faster than I will, the last thing I need is for him to tell me his numbers! :rotfl:

Well, I weigh in this Sunday. I really hope I lost a couple of pounds. If not I'll just be even more frustrated! I'm still heading to the gym & attempting to drink more water. Occasionally cheating, I try so hard not to but sometimes it seems like it doesn't matter if I starve myself or pig out, either weigh my weight seems to stay the same. Hopefully after I weigh in I'll start to feel more positive. :)
