What do you all think about this and what it means in the big picture? I would be very wary of Comcast.

Fill me in on this, takeover of what? I am a Comcast cable and internet subscriber and love their service....

*confused*

Comcast has solicited a hostile takeover bid of Disney this morning. The deal would be a $54 Billion deal for Comcast and assuming Disney's debt would raise the price to $66 Billion.

:(

That just feels "wrong". Disney is an entity unto itself in my mind, I guess..... *sigh*

I have found that since Comcast has taken over cable service in our town, we're on the cutting edge of everything, and the service is amazing, but I don't want them to "fade" Disney out by buying them!

Well, it appears that the Pandora's Box may have been opened. The other major entertainment companies are looking at this as well. It seems like Disney is going to be gobbled up by someone.

This is just like 1984...

Doesn't all the infighting to get Eisner out make Disney ripe for the takeover in other's eyes. It is scary to think that Disney could be anything but Disney.

I just heard about this at work! I had to get on the DIS to see if anyone else had heard anything. I knew if there was any info it would be here!!!!

I don't know much and I don't have enough info to form an opinion, but.....it just doesn't feel right to me somehow. Instincts.
I am a DVC member, DCL cruise junkie, and would rather be at WDW or Disneyland than just about anywhere. Anything that effects such a huge part of my leisure life is a little scary.

Keep me informed. I have to get back to work!

If it were just the broadcast units (TV and Radio stations) that would be one thing - the parks, cruise line and studios/pictures is something else ...

As much as I dislike Eisner, I do believe that he has had the right idea of keeping the Disney Company, name, and brand clear and free of mergers with other companies. (Not speaking of Disney aquisitions, like ABC.)

I just don't see a possible merger with Comcast as a good thing for Disney. I mean, do they want to be content oriented as they have been or do they want to become a distribution company?

Disney needs to stay Disney!

I would be opposed to this merger. There are enough huge conglomerates controlling far too much already.

I do not have Comcast cable, but if you take a look at the reader responses on www.boston.com, there is a large majority of current local Comcast customers who do not like the idea, because of the way Comcast does business around Boston.

It's also interesting to consider the impact that Roy Disney's actions have had on this. Could it be that other media companies are seeing turmoil at Disney and now think it's a great time to attempt a merger?

As I said before, I don't care for much of what Eisner has done of recent, but I don't think that good old Roy Disney is brimming with great ideas about running the company either. Some of the statements that he has made about the Disney/Pixar deal would indicate that he was willing to strike a deal, even if it was detremential to Disney itself. I disagree with that totally!

Just think, we may all soon be sailing on the Comcast Magic or the Comcast Wonder! Sounds magical and wonderful to me!

The ComCast letter was dripping with BS. They can see the handwriting on the wall. Customers are not happy with them and the "Direct TV" satelite providers are making huge inroads into cable business - especially in areas where Comcast is dominate. They need something to help slow the losing of customers, ie Disney's content. Good for comcast, not good for Disney.

Next instead of Pixie Dust we will be 'enchanted' with optic fibers!

I really hope this doesn't happen, seems like so many things have changed. I want Disney to stay Disney forever.

Well, I agree that even the news is sad. But, it's far from a done deal.

I just don't see Disney going for this. They are so protective of their property and content and I have a strong feeling that most of the stockholders want the company to remain independent.

Remember the rumors of a Disney/AOL or Disney/Yahoo merger not too long ago?

But Disney has to find the shareholders who will fight off this deal... Thus the term hostile... Comcast will up their offers... If Disney doesn't accept, a bidding war will statrt like what just went on over Universal.

What is Disney but a huge conglomerate!

This is all about controlling content. What is interesting is that for every channel you have in your cable lineup, Comcast pays a small per subscriber fee. The biggest portion of your cable bill is going to Disney channels, especially ESPN and its off-shoots. By owning those channels, Comcast is essentially paying itself, versus shelling out millions each month to Disney.

I have Comcast cable, and since they took over my service and choices (digital, video on demand) have gotten a lot better.

Eisner is just trying to protect his turf.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.
