COCKROACH at value hotel

I used to have an obsessive fright against wasps and bees. When we camped I jumped into the car if one came by. Eek.

Then I got pregnant with twins and just realized that there was no way I was going to pass this onto my kids. If my mom could quit smoking, I could face my fear. I did and now there is not even a thought that bugs are yucky.

Spiders? God bless them ... they eat others bugs. And it could be Charlotte!

The higher priced resorts gets you:

A themed pool
A hot tub (except for the Poly)
Bigger rooms
More/better transportation options
Proximity to a theme park. At Disney it is all about "Location, location, location."
Table service restaurants

I have never heard it said that if you stay at a Value resort you get only limited service. Or that the people who stay at a Deluxe are treated any better. That sure hasn't been my experience. I have had great stays at all levels of Disney resort, and haven't noticed any difference in how I was treated.

Totally agree. And because I can get most of that at a mod, I don't pay for that "extra" at a deluxe. There is no reason, money or not, that a value resort guest should expect anything less than a deluxe resort guest as far as maintaining a room and being sure that it is clean. To me, that is just complete snobbery of someone who pays for a deluxe.

I have to agree with the above poster who listed the amenities you pay for at a deluxe as the justification for the price difference (location, dining, pools, etc...)

I'm sorry, but to me, mousekeeping is not an amenity. That is a plain and simple service standard. Clean is just clean, right? To my knowledge they don't use Chanel disinfectant or diamond-encrusted swiffers at the deluxes?

Not to say, that good mousekeeping/pest control isn't the norm. We have always stayed at the All-Stars and POP, and have always had great, cleanly service. In fact they cleaned so much, that once they threw away our rechargeable batteries, thinking they were trash! Not what we had in mind, but we'll take too much clean any day! :laundy:

Disney is very, very clean everywhere. We have gone to many places, theme parks, etc. it is just the norm at Disney at not at all parks/resort/hotels.

Not a snobbery thing but we have relatives who a not well off but save like mad to go to a deluxe and like the extras. They have told me they expect more perks, that is all. However, I will have to get them to explain what perks they mean!

We are happy with value resorts but are trying a deluxe because of the amazing 4/3 deal. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever do this! So I will truly be able to come back and say what those "perks" are.

I've seen palmetto bugs at the bus stop outside the Grand Floridian. I think I mentioned it in my 2006 TR....everyone sitting in the bus stop area was picking up their feet as one ran under us. Some of you mentioned the show at AK...yes...how can we forget that it's tough to be a bug?? I've never seen bugs in any of my rooms at the resorts, but I have seen those cute little lizards all over outside and bunnies and squirrels, too. I'm happy with the level of bug control that Disney has going on - never really see any bees or wasps or mosquitoes or ants. Tons of love bugs, though.

Also, I have nothing but good things to say about mousekeeping. I've never had a dirty room or a mousekeeper who didn't do a great job cleaning our room, but then again, we're not messy slobs anyway so there's not really much for mousekeeping to do. We still tip $5 a day and one time even left a few winning FL lottery scratch tickets that we didn't have time to cash in before leaving. Another time we left our leftover bottled water, soda, beer for mousekeeping, too. In my 2006 TR, I included the fun we had all week with our mousekeepers, especially one named Jose...he'd keep leaving towel art and animals every day and by midweek we had so many towels we had nowhere to put them in our room (I included pics of this in my TR, too LOL) I love mousekeeping! :thumbsup2 They add to our Disney magic. pixiedust:

I believe the deluxes also have amenities like gyms and bell service. None of the values have any exercise rooms and you have to carry your own bags to and from your room.

Don't they all have slides in the pools too? The pools at the values are just that: pools. No slides, I think at all.

You also get a much bigger room, and I think you get a fridge too? The deluxes also have individual balconies or patios with chairs. Nothing like that at the values, and no fridges.

So when you stay at a deluxe, you don't have to carry your luggage to your room, you can get a workout on a treadmill, eat at a fancy sit-down restaurant instead of carrying a tray of pizza to a table. Not just a cleaner room.

Bengal roach spray is the best thing I've found to kill roaches - other than a shoe! I buy mine at Walmart but I'm sure it's available at other stores. You could spray your room in the morning before you leave for the theme parks. That way you won't have to smell the fumes from the spray. In Louisiana we're full of roaches. I'm not scared of them. I just don't want them touching me.
Now if I could only find something to get rid of the snakes. I'm definitely afraid of them. Maybe I'll bring mothballs and put them by my door. I don't know if this really works or is just an old wives' tale.

It sounds to me like your the "snob". Aren't you so much more clever than the rest of us getting most of the perks for a greatly reduced price:rolleyes:.

I think there should be a basic level of mousekeeping service and that having dust on the TV stand you can write in isn't it for any level of resort.

I also think if I'm paying two to four times what others are paying I should get more service. Housekeeping at the Poly and CR used to be better than the Mods, it isn't anymore. If I'm paying $150 for a Disney room I can make allowances for a little dust on the baseboards or a bit of fluff under the beds. If I'm paying $450 dollars for a room it should have the white glove treatment. It's like the difference between a two star hotel and a four star hotel. You get what you pay for (or you should).

OP - "I wish I had stayed at Pop Century." Well, I stayed there for 2 nights in October for the first time. I posted on these boards about seeing the cockroach in the bathroom on the second night but everyone told me it was a Palmetto bug. After seeing the pictures of the two next to each other, I can tell you, it was a cockroach. It had those majorly long antenna that kept moving around - not the short ones on the Palmetto. I agree that I'm sure they are everywhere, values, mods and deluxe - although it was the first time I have ever seen one in a hotel room. Now, I just make sure to keep the bathroom light on at night :)

Wow... you guys are brutal!!!Now stop it!!!! this is a disney forum, grow up! We all have different ideas and we need to accept that and move on! The op stated she was going to move to Michigan?? we have cockroaches here, it usually in the bad part of town, but they do exist here! We also have these huge flying insects that could carry a small child away called mosquetoe's(sp), you need a blood transfusion when they are done with you!! Have a magical day!!:goodvibes

We are very close to Naperville....Yorkville area. Maybe we are lucky, we built our house 5 or 6 years ago, and so far (fingers crossed!) no visitors of any kind. The thought of ANYTHING scurrying (sp?) around while I sleep

Now that I have officially jinxed myself.....can of decon in hand, activating force shield......

Careful - I used to tell everybody how lucky we were in our house that never ever had any bugs of any kind. I found out a few months later we had bats:scared1: Turns out the bats were taking care of the bugs for us.

:wave2: I'm sorry your vacation started out so badly. Unfortunately, you ran into 2 problems that are very difficult to avoid. 1. Florida, (and most of the south for that matter,) have bugs. Its part of the trade off for the great weather. If I saw one or two, they probably would have to die,;) but that would be O.K. (Ya"ll can shoo them if you want). 2. Most people are very particular about there housemates, some are not. :scared: And some of these people some come to Disney and probably bring a hitchhiker or two. :grouphug: While Im sure Disney has a pest control schedule, they can't spray every room every time it is turned over. (Just imagine the respiratory difficulties, and other health problems that would cause.) :confused3

Please understand, that even in the most Deluxe of resorts, you may have an occasional unwelcomed visitor, and be prepared to greet them with a great big shoe!pixiedust:

And finally, try to find the humor, remember Mickey is a MOUSE!

Can't wait to see Mickey again:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl:

Oh my, was this directed at me?

I can assure you my house is very clean (possible overly so, I have all white upholstery) and I am very particular about my "housemates". I don't smash palmetto bugs if I don't have to because the crunch grosses me out and because I understand that they are not an invasive pest as any entomologist will tell you.

I will overcome my dislike to smash a german roach because they are invasive (though I haven't had any german roaches in my house, I would get them in an apartment I used to live in when the neighbors would spray and the roaches would all come over to my house, of course they didn't find toddler's cheerios on the floor or dog dishes to eat out of so they would all go back to the neighbors shortly).

What I have a problem with more so then the occasional palmetto bug wandering in from outside WERE THEY LIVE is the over use of pesticides and poisons people use because they don't understand what they are dealing with. It's stupid and much more dangerous than a "big icky bug". Also, lizards eat bugs (like roaches) and they don't have any germs that will hurt humans so why on earth are so many of you afraid of them?

Careful - I used to tell everybody how lucky we were in our house that never ever had any bugs of any kind. I found out a few months later we had bats:scared1: Turns out the bats were taking care of the bugs for us.
Good one! Bats are good but their dung is not.

Roaches do not always coincide with cleanliness. Ask any exterminator. They are just looking for a love nest and the opportunity to breed. It is a sexy world in the insectum strata.

I don't think dusting a room is on the list of "extras" at any Disney resort. I stayed at Value resorts twice last year, and I was not treated any differently than when I stayed at POR the year before. Or the Poly the year before that.

There is no such thing as Value housekeeping or Deluxe housekeeping.

I said dusting DAILY.
Dusting sure and I didn't say it was extra.
I said she probably got the cleaning standards they are supposed to do daily.

And at a Deluxe the maids do go out of their way a do a little more extra.
Like towel animals or chocolate on pillow, ect. I consider that extra and deluxe treatment.
I've stayed at all levels of resorts, each several times and you do notice the difference.

Staying in a hotel that has outside access from your room will can easily result in some type of visitor. If the OP truly wants to avoid almost any possibility of visitors, then they need to stay in a deluxe resort, higher than the first floor, and keep the balcony door closed. Even that won't assure no visitors, but it makes it a bit harder for them to get in.

I have to disagree with you.... I don't think the cost of the resort or the floor level has anything to do with it. We had the palmetto bugs AND spiders in our 3rd floor room at the Poly a few years ago and yes we did keep our balcony door closed.

Our last trip (August, 2008) was our first time staying on the property. We arrived one day before Tropical Storm Faye, and stayed in a cabin at Fort Wilderness. Being from northern Minnesota, we were just thrilled by the change in scenery. When we arrived, all the creatures around Fort Wilderness were busy preparing for the storm. We saw several armadillos (talk about freaking out some northern Minnesotans!), and there were these giant snails all over the place (only managed to crunch a few on accident). The frogs were going CRAZY! There were so many frogs that we couldn't sleep due to the noise! A couple frogs had gotten into the cabin, and a gecko, too. DW pulled the curtains back and there was a huge frog on the window. They had pivoting heads on them, which is not like our frogs back home! When she removed the frog, it turned and looked right at her - talk about freaking her out! She let out the biggest scream you could imagine! Once the storm was gone, the frogs were gone - there were tadpoles in the swamps - and very soon - itty bitty frogs all over the place. Very fun for the kids to see the whole evolution! AND, for the rest of the 2 weeks, we never saw another armadillo. Kept looking for snakes, but didn't see any of those either. Never saw a roach or a palmetto either, though, which is pretty surprising considering the swamps filled to the brim and with all the water.

I guess the moral of the story is that the swamps are filled with all kind of stuff around there, and I bet it is very hard to keep those critters out of everywhere. I agree - the rooms should be clean, though - no matter what. It's Disney - and standards should be high no matter where you are on Disney property! DMIL gave our mousekeeping lady a large tip at the end, and she was so excited, you couldn't believe it. She lunged at her to give her a great big hug. She did a great job.

Anyway, not sure where I was going with this, but just a fun story!
