COCKROACH at value hotel

What I find perplexing about this whole situation is that some people believe that cleaning is not what a "value" guest should expect
I genuinely don't see where you're reading that. EVERY hotel Guest (except DVC, and this is addressed in the purchase/membership agreement) has the right to expect the same level of housekeeping each day.
As to the bugs I don't expect them at home and don't expect them at a hotel. I live in Texas and we have seasonal pests, but we guard against them. Sure some may slip through, but I would graciously ask for different accomodations.
Would you please go back and read my first post in this thread? A bug (supersize, remember) flew into my room when I opened the door. I SEE no way to guard against that, except to never open the door. I also see NO reason to request different accommodations, unless my intent was to never open the door to THAT room, either.

Were/could there have been bugs* in that, or any prior or subsequent Disney or non-Disney hotel in my entire life? I'm sure.

*Excepting bedbugs, for which I do look, and due to which I would expect different accommodations immediately, whether at that hotel or another one.

Housekeeping is a thankless, miserable disgusting, low paying job. Most folks consider housekeepers to be second class. I speak from experience. I tried the job once and it was one of the worst jobs I ever had.
I admire you, in all sincerity. I would never. I don't even like cleaning up after myself. I would genuinely rather starve first, before I'd support myself cleaning bathrooms (yeah, yeah, I know - entire rooms) used by other people.

Not to say, that good mousekeeping/pest control isn't the norm.
Oh! Thanks for jogging my memory! Pest control ISN'T a housekeeping responsibility, it's a maintenance/engineering issue. If the housekeper sees bugs, yes, that should be reported to the proper personnel at the property.

If, on the other hand, housekeeping doesn't see bugs, there's nothing for that person TO report to anyone.

Aren't you so much more clever than the rest of us getting most of the perks for a greatly reduced price
:rolleyes2 Nice. Real nice.
I also think if I'm paying two to four times what others are paying I should get more service.
Really? More? How much more? And how? Remember, you ARE already getting multiple perqs and features of which Value resort Guests might only dream - but we're talking about housekeeping. How much more housekeeping service should you get at your Deluxe resort than a Guest at a Value, and how should it be presented? Should your housekeeper be down on her knees with a magnifying glass and a pair of tweezers, removing any atoms of any foreign material (including, for example, individual dead skin cells we shed constantly as a matter of existence), while the Value resort Guest should just expect the housekeeper to stand in the room and say, "Dirt, begone!"? Should the Value resort housekeeper merely replace the roll of toilet paper while the Deluxe resort housekeeper cleans the entire bathrooms with a (new) toothbrush?

:snooty:

The German cockroach is one of the most common and prominent household cockroaches in the world, and can be found throughout many human settlements. These insects are particularly fond of inhabiting restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, and nursing homes.

The German cockroach is originally from Asia and very common in Russia, not in Germany
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cockroach

Having said that, I assume that some of you do not travel very far from home. I have encountered bugs all around the world, including the giant ants in a high end resort in India who came out and marched along my wall and into my bed every night unless I killed the leaders of the trail.

I've also seen palmetto bugs all across the southern United States. Rodents and insects exist in every part of the world, and do not necessarily indicate a lack of cleanliness.

Just an FYI to those people stating that a Palmetto bug is not a roach -that is an incorrect statement. Coming from someone who worked in pest control, a Palmetto bug is an American cockroach (Palmetto bug makes them sound nicer though, don't ya think?). They are attracted to water, especially during dry periods, and will often come through drains. They also very easily slip under doors, and can come in on bags, on people's mail, etc. Usually you only see one or two at a time. They also love to munch on ants, which are also a common problem in Florida.

A German cockroach is better known as a "filth breeding" cockroach because it often is found in conditions where people have left food out, filthy conditions, etc. You can have a perfectly clean house, but if your neighbor has them, chances are, you will too! They are EXTREMELY hard to kill off-it typically it averages around 3 months.

Then you have the Asian cockroach -they fly in swarms.....

Holy cow, I would die!! I'm one of those 'northerners' that can't take the bugs, let alone a lizard!!! God forbid I ever see a snake down there, that would be it for me. :scared1: I need to toughen up I guess :)

We had a snake right outside our room at ASM in June. We thought it was great. The kids loved watching it slither into the bushes. (Don't worry...it was a harmless black snake.) We also had lots of chipmunks, lizards and rabbits.

Um. The exterminator told me clean conditions are not the bottom line of the German cockroach: it is a girl and a boy coming together to make lots of offspring. Yes, they need food but they also feast on book bindings, and other yummy things, they do not need much to survive on, in fact they go weeks/months without eating.

They can be eliminated: first a total fumigation get 99% of them then a gluey food substance with poison will get the others over the next few weeks. He has seen these in 4 million dollar homes which are very clean indeed. It does help to keep the home clean but that does not mean the bugs won't come in if they find a way to hitch hike.
How do I know? It took 2 weeks and $600 to get rid of ours (brought in from MIL's apartment an hour's drive away) ten years ago. I did not even know what they were until 3 weeks later ***kapow*** my kitchen was crawling with them at night! My house is very clean.

0 I have to say that I FREAKED when we finally arrived in Florida from Seattle. We had our four little girls (it was 10pm) and we found cockroaches in our room at "All Star Music." I had a horrible experience with the room assigner when I called to ask for a room in a different building. I WAS NOT PAYING to sleep with BUGS!! She was rude and told me too bad and that they didn't have any other rooms! I told her I was marching up
to the desk and that if they didn't have a new room for us immediately I would start telling everyone in that hotel about the cockroaches!

OP: You said you "FREAKED" so I'm guessing this means you were probably not especially courteous to the room assigner when you called to report the problem. I'm in customer service and I know that the way people treat me has an affect as to what kind of response they get fom me. Sure, they are expected to be courteous but it's a two way street. Just because you're paying someone for a service doesn't mean you can treat them as you wish. Secondly, threatening to tell everyone at the resort about the bugs wasn't going to get you anywhere. Tip #1: when you have a complaint whether at a resort, resaurant, retail store, etc. start out by being respectful of the other human being that you are dealing with. Tip #2 Don't make threats, it just makes you look bad and makes them want to help you even less.

I wonder if the cast member was rude or if she just didn't tell you what you wanted to hear perhaps? You didn't have to "march" to the front desk and make threats. I would have walked up there, explained the situation and requested a new room. By the way, I would have done this calmly which I'm sure would have been better received.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. My family has had many enjoyable experiences at the various resorts, including ASM. Maybe you will give them another chance, maybe not. Just remember to treat others with the same respect you want and deserve.

Hi Pixiedustaholic! Do you really think nicer acting people get looked after better?
Why do complainers get better treatment or DO THEY?
This would be a good new thread to start I think!

I live in GA and these bugs are everywhere. While I don't welcome them in my home one or two do manage to find their way in every now and again. We just shoo them away. What distrubs me are the love bugs in WDW. I was astounded because there were EVERYWHERE when we went to the world in May. I have pictures of my girls walking from behind and they had love bugs on their shoulders and back! YucK!

Yes, I think that people who are at least decent when they complain get a better response than someone who is nasty or hateful.

Yes, we definitely want our customers to be satisfied and will do whatever we can reasonably do to make that happen. Thankfully, the guys I work for recognize that we deserve to be treated decently. One of our points during orientation is to let our employees know that it is not okay to treat customers or coworkers with disrespect but it is also not okay for our customers to treat us with disrespect. The owner has a zero tolerance policy for customers verbally abusing employees. If customers get nasty and/or start making threats, etc. we will not deal with them. They will be asked to leave the property and not come back. Yes, customers are why we are there and they pay the bills and put food on the table. I'm lucky enough to be employed by people who recognize that the cusomer is NOT ALWAYS right.

Working retail while in college at a jewellers we were told the customer is NOT always right as well.

But we were told to not get upset or raise our voice, just call the manager as s/he was paid to deal with these things.

Funny how one salesperson said this: "I would like to see you happy but that is hard to do when you are yelling at me."

Very interesting question, and yes definitely a great thread to start! I'm always really surprised when someone says they were treated rudely by the CMs at WDW cuz we've never been treated rudely, and we're always courteous and polite.

I think being nice to someone, esp. when your complaint isn't their fault, goes a long way to getting the outcome you're looking for. Naturally someone is more inclined to help you when you treat them with respect and not yell at them and threaten them or tell them what to do. So, I'd have to say I don't think complainers have anything on non-complainers.

I don't mind if you start a new thread as this one is mostly about bugs but yes, it does cover people's concerns. Specifically I am interested in how people act and how CMs treat them. Good points made here indeed.

I have said many times..don't tip disney mousekeeping, they are horrible. We haven't been checked into a clean room in many, many years.

Are you sure it was a cockroach...a palmetto bug seems more likely.

Tipping is not part of this discussion and I hope this does not hijack this thread...egads.
Our topic is bugs and how they scare the bejezeers out of some folks. The OP was not happy with how the desk dealt with them. Not about tipping, lots of that on the board lately and I am sure you can find plenty of opinions there. Good luck!

Hey at least you got a free meal out of it! I live in Florida and experience those bugs quite often in my home, to bad i cant call a front desk to complain and then get a free breakfast at IHOP. LOL :lmao:

Ha ha, do you mean they get to eat the cockroaches? LOL (yes I know she meant a character meal)... but funny about you calling the front desk at home...!

I agree, although the thread would probably get moved to the Community Board sooner or later :)
I think complainers THINK they get better treatment BECAUSE they are being vocal and abusive; while their situation might get resolved, it would more likely be because the person they are dealing with just wants to get rid of them - and it's likely they got minimal resolution. Treating someone with respect, even in a negative situation, tends to result in a better response. Do unto others, and all that...

In fairness, it is a little because don't forget, one of the OP's complaints was that she tipped $5 (per night? total? not clear) and didn't get towel animals.

But you're right - the point of view in the post you quote is unrelated to THIS thread

This is exactly what we do. In no circumstance is it ok to "get down in the mud" with the customer. I just happen to be one of the managers who gets paid to deal with them.:crazy2:

Love the salesperson quote!:rotfl2:

This thread is cracking me up. I work in a bldg that is very clean but very old and occassionally we get these huge mutant (I think have been on earth since dinosaurs) bugs that look like roaches about 3 in long. I won't even step on them because they crunch.

OP--hate that you had a bad experience and just keep positive knowing that you did encounter numerous pleasant CMs while you where there. We've stayed at ASMu and never had any problems but it can definitely happen anywhere. We were staying at ASMo once and came back to our room and when I sat my bag down to dig out our key I almost set it on a "frog". There it sat right next to our door. I'm glad we saw it on the outside because had it got in I probably would have freaked out.

Oh you are right! So sorry there. I missed that one and I am not going to touch it (tipping) though as I am just enjoying the bug topic so much!
But we were in Jamaica in November and a geeko was in the room. It ran over DH in the night and he said "oh I think a spider just went over me." In the AM when he was jogging I found it, put a bin over it and then put it upside down outside. He did not believe me until I turned it up. Funny! He can't believe I am not squeemish but I used to be.
