Um. The exterminator told me clean conditions are not the bottom line of the German cockroach: it is a girl and a boy coming together to make lots of offspring. Yes, they need food but they also feast on book bindings, and other yummy things, they do not need much to survive on, in fact they go weeks/months without eating.
They can be eliminated: first a total fumigation get 99% of them then a gluey food substance with poison will get the others over the next few weeks. He has seen these in 4 million dollar homes which are very clean indeed. It does help to keep the home clean but that does not mean the bugs won't come in if they find a way to hitch hike.
How do I know? It took 2 weeks and $600 to get rid of ours (brought in from MIL's apartment an hour's drive away) ten years ago. I did not even know what they were until 3 weeks later ***kapow*** my kitchen was crawling with them at night! My house is very clean.
Right-that's what I was saying in my post -that you can have a clean house, but if someone else near you has conditions the encourages their development, you're likely going to get them. And no, I never said you couldn't get rid of them, just that it's hard to do so. I can believe it cost you $600 to treat, because it's not as simple as one spraying -treatment usually involved multiple visits to place that sticky bait and ensure they all died off.

Just when I thought they were gross enough as it is....I learn they carry egg packs. Oh the things to be learned on the Disboards. I feel all creepy crawly now.

You just have to undestand that no matter how much you spray a few of the buggers are bound to be around.
