COCKROACH at value hotel

Good thing you didn't see the thread about the snake in the Contemporary with pictures and everything. :lmao:

Oh we saw that thread. My DS13 thought it was cool. I am not afraid of snakes so that would not have bothered me at all. Spider's on the other hand put me in a tizzy.:rotfl2: :scared:

We lived in Naperville for 5 years and had mice in the house more than once. And don't tell me big cities up north don't have rats.
I'll take bugs over rodents any day. I can smoosh a bug with my shoe, I can't do that with rodents :sad2:

We are very close to Naperville....Yorkville area. Maybe we are lucky, we built our house 5 or 6 years ago, and so far (fingers crossed!) no visitors of any kind. The thought of ANYTHING scurrying (sp?) around while I sleep

Now that I have officially jinxed myself.....can of decon in hand, activating force shield......

The mousekeeper (who I tipped $5) didn't ever leave animals for us and really did only the minimum..

The minumim is cleaning the room which I'm sure you got to their standards.
(I'm sure dusting daily isn't part of Value Resort cleaning)
Just because you tip doesn't mean you deserve more, like animals.
Your tipping is you saying thank you, not "I expect more".
You are at a Value Resort, you get value treatment.
If you want extra papering, pay for a Deluxe.

So if you pay the outrageous prices at a deluxe, you should expect extra "papering (I assume you mean pampering)"?

We've stayed at deluxes and sometimes the mousekeeping is no better than what was described by the OP. It does not matter if you stay value, moderate or deluxe--mousekeeping has gone down hill. And just because you stay at a deluxe, does not mean you should have better service.

I don't think dusting a room is on the list of "extras" at any Disney resort. I stayed at Value resorts twice last year, and I was not treated any differently than when I stayed at POR the year before. Or the Poly the year before that.

There is no such thing as Value housekeeping or Deluxe housekeeping.

We too are close to Naperville...we're in Carol Stream. Knock on wood--in 15 years no mice! :goodvibes

What I find perplexing about this whole situation is that some people believe that cleaning is not what a "value" guest should expect. No matter what hotel I stay at I expect the room to be clean. Dusting is part of cleaning and if housekeeping is not doing it then it should be reported. Afterall paying up to 150 a night at a "value" resort does not mean that Disney should not keep up their end of the bargain.

As to the bugs I don't expect them at home and don't expect them at a hotel. I live in Texas and we have seasonal pests, but we guard against them. Sure some may slip through, but I would graciously ask for different accomodations. I would also expect an explaination from the management. You are on vacation, not involuntary exile from your home. You should be able to enjoy it and Disney should take every reasonable measure to make it that way.

We saw an armadillo roaming around outside of Epcot. You would have thought he was an exhibit at Animal Kingdom by the number of people taking pictures of it. As far as the bugs go, I come from Texas where the cockroach could be on the state flag, and while gross, it is what it is.

One of my children is very, very asthmatic and we had to walk past the smoking section to get to the busses and food court -- it was just awful.

Wow, I didn't realise that there was only one pathway at All Star Music. Surely, if your child is that bothered by smoke, you could have found a different way to get ot the buses and food court.

Seriously? As in "I'm sorry Ma'am, but the bugs were tired of sleeping outside and they didn't mind sharing a room"? I don't expect bugs anywhere I sleep either, but I don't think managment needs to explain anything. No matter how much you spray, a few bugs will be around.

Sounds like many of you need to go to the Tree of Life and watch the movie.:)

This thread is crackin' me up!!!! I'm a southern belle from Alabama and bugs are just a part of life. The house next door to me is a rental that military families move in and out of every June. These folks are from all over the country and are ALWAYS freaked out by the bugs we have here in the south. I'm finding out that bugs must only live in the south. And the armidillo? That is so funny, we saw one also when we stayed at POP. Some folks at POP weren't sure what it was. I guess we southerners are just more familiar with these critters.

A southern belle would be freaked out at our winters! LOL! Just dealing with minus 40 and blizzards is normal for us but people who do not deal with this get so shocked. Just whatever we grow up with for sure. (I think our bugs are cool too and we are used to them too)....

While I sympathize with your experience, I hope that you now realize that Palmetto bugs are a part of the Florida experience, and that you can choose to walk around the smoking areas.

I think that the resort was very kind to change your room, as you could have just evicted the bug from yours, as others have done, and carry on with your vacation.

As others have stated, tipping mousekeeping does not guarantee towel animals, or anything else. A tip is something that you give someone for great service -- it is not supposed to be a bribe. I hope that in the future you continue to enjoy your stays at WDW.

I am from the Deep South, almost to Mexico, and yes we have roaches but I still freak when I see them, and if I see them in a hotel, I expect the staff to respond in a polite way when I politely complain. Really, in the service industry, the "customer is always right" (at least to a point unless they cross a line) so they should have handled it and not said it was just too bad. I would want them to remove the bugs and disinfect the areas around where they were found, personally, unless they were everywhere and then yes I would want another room.

Anyway, just b/c you are from the south doesn't mean that you enjoy or brush off (ha, sometimes literally) roaches - despite being around them all my life I hate them w/ a passion.

See my earlier post on this thread about cockroaches and rats at 52 degrees north (that is Winnipeg area in Canada just north of North Dakota we are not part of the U.S.A. but our own country, we live one hours drive from the U.S. and some areas of Canada are more southern than the U.S.) so in other words, you CAN have bugs, rats and mice ANYWHERE.

I trap mice from Sept to Dec when they move in my old house.

I looked very carefully at a map of the resort to see where the smoking section is, and why anyone MUST walk past through it to get to the buses and food court. I don't see any smoking sections near the Broadway area, and there is one by the main building. It seems easy to avoid if you really want to because of asthma. I just don't get it.

And isn't "the minimum" what you're supposed to get from housekeeping? Everyone may have a different definition of what is included in "the minimum", but for me, it means surfaces wiped down, beds made, clean towels and the carpet vacuumed. Anything above that means it's more than the minimum!!

. And just because you stay at a deluxe, does not mean you should have better service.

Um...yes it does. It doesn't mean you are a better person. It doesn't mean you life is any more wonderful, but if you are paying over twice as much for your room, you should get better service.

Seriously, if not better service, what do you think is the justification for higher prices? :confused3 If I'm paying higher prices it's not just because the room has more hidden Mickeys. I expect that the higher premium is paying the salaries of the extra staff assigned to work at that resort.

That said, I do think the rooms at all WDW resorts should meet a certain standard.

That said, the OP should have made a point to talk to staff about her child's severe asthma (I'm not chiding op, but telling her for future trips, she should make a point to inform her resort, so she gets a room that gets extra attention. WDW does do this. It'part of what makes WDW, WDW.)

That said, we too have encountered room that were less than perfect when it comes to being clean. It is my experience that housekeepers are not paid very well, and are expected to work at a very brisk pace. I'm sure some staff is more experienced than others. Housekeeping is a thankless, miserable disgusting, low paying job. Most folks consider housekeepers to be second class. I speak from experience. I tried the job once and it was one of the worst jobs I ever had. Though I did not work for Disney. That said, ALL WDW rooms should be kept to a certain level of clean, and some rooms at WDW fall short. The public areas are all spotless. The rooms should be kept up to the same level.

Nevertheless, at a more expensive resort, one should excpet, and get - a higher level of service. A room which costs $900 per night should be spotless!

Yes, request a room with allergy sensitive if they have it. Very good point Mickeylov'r!

Yes, you should have better elements for a more expensive room. They will all be clean but there are extra staff for more details. That is why they are called deluxe as opposed to value.

The higher priced resorts gets you:

A themed pool
A hot tub (except for the Poly)
Bigger rooms
More/better transportation options
Proximity to a theme park. At Disney it is all about "Location, location, location."
Table service restaurants

I have never heard it said that if you stay at a Value resort you get only limited service. Or that the people who stay at a Deluxe are treated any better. That sure hasn't been my experience. I have had great stays at all levels of Disney resort, and haven't noticed any difference in how I was treated.

We found one at POR about 4 years ago, and boy were my boys facinated with it. We dont' have big bugs like that in Michigan. Last year when we went, my DS found a dead one outside and wanted to take it home for his bug project for school. Uhhhh, no I'm not taking a dead bug home in my suitcase:crazy2: . Bugs don't pick the level of resort to visit, they are everywhere in Disney. Sorry the CM's acted the way they did, but I'm sure being used to them it really wasn't a big deal in their opinion:rolleyes:

I need to move to Michigan, then!!:lmao:
I have lived in Charleston my whole life...and yes palmetto bugs are a part of life...but there is NOTHING I am more scared of. I get goosebumps just reading this thread! I cant smoosh them either...i have to get a can of spray and spray, spray, spray...til they die die die! If you arent careful, they sometimes fly at you!:crazy2:
For this reason, I agree with a PP who suggested getting an indoor corridor and top floor! and even then you wont be completely safe!
