I agree with Magickingdom - I'm not going to argue with you. Our men and women are doing a FABULOUS job on the war on terror. I am VERY proud of them and I THANK them from the bottom of my heart for fighting for our FREEDOM.

Agreed and well-said! :thumbsup2

Ok. Lets agree to disagree and move on. The reason that the OP posted this was to give a shout out to our military for what they did, not start a verbal war. We are getting away from why this thread was started in the first place. It's good to debate, but when it starts getting personal, it's time to move on.

Right this was a a :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: for the military.

I am proud of what the military is doing and relieved about the news I woke up to today. Seems like we hear so many sad stories, that hearing about something going right was welcome news. The only news that would make me happier is if I woke to news of the same fate happening to OBL.

What threat was faced by the US in Iraq? Please tell.

The former administration knew SH was a threat, the current administration knew SH was a threat, those running for President in '04 knew SH was a threat. Some changed their tune when it became politically expediant. When the American people started seeing dead bodies on TV, the dems took advantage of that and changed their tune.

Anyone who believes there were never WMDs has their head in the sand!

I'm very glad he got stopped (dead or alive, didn't matter much to me). Sadly, there are many willing to step right into his shoes and continue the terror. The insurgents will not stop until their objective is met. I hope no one is lulled into "mission accomplished" mode by this. This is far from over. We are going to be stuck over there for a long, long, time.

I disagree. I think this is a major blow to al-Queda. We are stronger than they are; we have right on our side. We WILL NOT stop until the enemies of freedom are put out of business.

The US is under no threat from any state right now and hasn't been since the end of the Cold War.

Actually, in context this is pretty accurate. The USA is and has been in no threat greater than usual since the end of the Cold War, which threatened WW3 and a nuclear war.

The USA (and EVERY nation that exists, pretty much) remains under threat of terrorist activity egged on by various politicians in the same way as it has been ever since the start of its life.

Terrorist and/or state encouraged threat is in no way, shape or form a new thing - to say so is incredibly disrespectful to the countless innocents killed by such forces for centuries past. It is an ongoing threat that has perpetuated throughout history.

I understand why some people adamantly believe that it only started a few years back; politicians often go though the charade of scaring their constituents stiff with dire predictions; the time between each scaredom is quite variable and really depends on the political climate.

The earliest terrorist act that comes to mind is the 5th of November 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his associates attempted to kill the Government of Great Britain by means of an enormous cache of dynamite stored in the cellars, hidden there by activists.

Interestingly, even back then there were suggestions of the state scaring people stiff for political reasons. When Guy Fawkes was caught, the King's guards were seen as heroes and the Government as just and fair in the face of violence. The theories suggested that Guy Fawkes had in fact been set up by Royal Household in order to boost the King's popularity, which had been floundering. This would certainly explain why the timing of the capture was so perfect and so on, but realistically, no-one knows, nor will they ever, I suspect.

Nowadays the 5th of November is still celebrated every year, dubbed the bonfire night. Celebrations involving enormous fireworks displays and the burning of the "Guy" on a pyre.

And so it continues.

This raises an uncomfortable question.

Were the American intelligence services were so incompetent that they got it all wrong or were the American forces in general so incompetent that they couldn't find the stockpiles? This applies to Britain as well, which makes the whole question even more embarrassing - the British army is used to counter-terrorist operations, given the number of nail bombs the IRA liked to litter London with.

I mean, it's not all that easy to hide stockpiles of naff off bombs anyway, is it? It's not like hiding a Christmas present or anything. Besides, they couldn't have been hidden or moved at all really according to the intelligence presented to us - they were capable of being deployed within 45 minutes of the order being given, supposedly and 45 minutes is just not enough time to get a shovel and dig them all up, is it?

It's also embarrassing for Sadam Hussein, isn't it? Not only could the invading forces not find them, he couldn't find them either! I mean, if he could have, he'd probably have fired them all at the invading troops to keep them busy whilst he sped away on a moped or something.

There is a third option though.

Maybe the Illuminate nicked them all and hid them in, say, Scotland? I know, I know, there's not a jot of sense in hiding them but then again the Illuminate LOVE hiding things!

By jove, I think I've got it!

I started this thread last night because I was in shock to hear the news. I prayed it wasn't a mistake. I am saddened to see how many just can't simply be relieved without finding something to slam the US about.

I think we all know that there are people ready to step up and take his place, and that there is still a lot to be solved, but hopefully, this is a step in the right direction.

I firmly believe there are people out there watching, planning and looking for an opening to harm any and all western countries.

I am so proud of our military. I just hope someone doesn't try to claim the pilots committed war crimes when they dropped those bombs. I saw a clip of someone holding up a backpack and small sandals, so I am sure it is just around the corner.

lyeag,

Someone on the radio (a caller) when I was coming home from work actually did bring that up about how everyone involved in the bombing should be charged with murder from the pilots all the way up. I believe the person actually said there was no proof that he did anything (where has this person been). The funny thing is after the caller got off the host then went through about 30 minutes of proof.

Heh, I'll bet they will.

Politics aside, we live in a sue-happy world where you can sue virtually anyone for anything.

Example:

A customer sued Cadbury's Chocolates because the jumbo sized chocolate fingers weren't as big as he'd thought they'd be.

He won.

I hope they are thrilled when they get drafted because who wants to volunteer if they are going to be charged for doing their jobs?

lyeag,

Exactly. Obviously the caller has the right to say what he wants, but this proved how ignorant some who think this way are.

Hey, even Al Gore is glad he's dead!! (he's on Leno right now).

How was Iraq a threat to the US? What weapons did Saddam possess that could have struck the US? Those non-existing WMDs? Some strongly-worded letters?

Weaponised people?

Don't waste your time. Obviously he has an ample supply of tin foil.

it bugs me though.

"Saddam had no weapons, he was no threat - Bin Laden is the real threat."

The tinfoil hatters are the ones that actually believe Zarqawi was a mastermind.

Zarqawi and bin Laden did NOT get along with each other and Zarqawi only pledged allegiance to bin Laden recently in order to inflate his own ego and reputation.

Zarqawi has long wanted to fight the "near-enemy" and not the "far-enemy", the opposite of bin Laden.

Again, I urge you all to read this article while it's still available:
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200607/zarqawi?ca=9hloQUJamUfhaPsPg%2B9E5USZvqSqBDKyXpAE9U9Gsng%3D

You'll see the myth that Zarqawi was some great mastermind is just that, a myth.

As for jimmiej, you pull quotes from Clinton from 1998 and from Democratic Congress members who did NOT have access to the same information as this administration had in the run-up to the war. Your link to some person's site is filled with non sequitir quotes.

You want to know what this admin knew? Watch Hijacking Catastrophe from Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski and also read her article called The New Pentagon Papers. Lt. Col. Kwiatkowski worked in the Office of Special Plans (within the Pentagon) under PNAC member Douglas Feith. Feith is one of the key architects of providing false and exaggerated into directly to the WH, bypassing the normal vetting process done by the CIA and other intel agencies.

And, as for Zarqawi, there are now reports on FOX and other networks that Zarqawi was ALIVE after the attack and was turned over to Iraqi authorities and was later killed or died in custody. They still can't keep their lies straight.

Since your offering reading suggestions, I suggest you read this book.
