Closing threads at OP requests. Agree or disagree?

I see quite often people starting threads and then when things don't go their way (or they go off-topic into a debate) the OP asks the mods to close the thread.
Do you agree with this? Now I am not questioning policies by the way, just curious of peoples opinions.

I don't agree. I think if you post something then it should take its course good or bad. I have actually read some very interesting discussions that ultimatley got shut down at OP's request.

I feel that if the mods do not see a violation of policy than it should remain open.

If a thread goes way off, and they certainly do sometimes and the OP doesn't like the path it took, then stop reading. Usually it has nothing to do with what the OP wrote, but with what someone replied with.

If the OP doesn't like that people don't agree or support them, too bad. That's the chance you take when you post something publicly. As long as no one is being mean or launching personal attacks it should stay open. If people want to further discuss it without you, then walk away and let us. Obviously we find it interesting or we wouldn't be carrying on the conversation.

I say just let them go and let them run its' course.

Thoughts?????

I totally agree with you!!!

I think that they should only be closed when there are obvious violations of board policies and even then I think that the offending posts should be removed and the thread left open whenever possible.

Totally agree!

I prefer threads to be permitted to run their course. I can live with a thread being closed at an OP's request, but I don't like it.

Well said!

I don't think threads should be closed at the OP's request. If you no longer are interested in the thread or if something offended you, stop reading/posting.

It just seems rather immature when posters do that, it reminds me of a child saying "I'm not having fun anymore, so I'm taking my toys and going home".

I would prefer that offensive messages, individually, be deleted, and then the threads allowed to proceed unhindered.

I totally agree...this happened just a few days ago too.

:rotfl2: Exactly! If they want to go home, fine, but they should leave their toys!!! :teeth:

I also agree!

::yes:: totally agree. Sometimes I think there are alternative motives behind their posts instead of seeking true opinions. JMO.

I agree that individual posts should be deleted, instead of the entire thread closed!!!!!! :thumbsup2

As for whether OP can request it be closed - I think it would depend on the topic: how personal, things like that....

:wizard:

I don't mind if it's closed at the OP's request. No big deal to me. If someone wants to continue the discussion they could start another thread.

I actually think sometimes it's for the best - especially if the thread is no longer about the original topic. Although it's irritating if the thread is still on topic, I would rather have an OP close down a thread than to have individuals who are not the OP do it. I get really irritated when people try to have the last word and say the thread is done or try to change it into a bunch of silliness.

I know I have dilemas in my life that I would be interested in feedback on, but I don't post them because I know what would happen (and who would probably do it!). I usually have sympathy for an OP that is struggling with an issue and gets flamed all over the place at a time when they are already vulnerable.

Then again, if someone posts something like "I want to kill puppies" and then acts surprised when people get on their case - I lose sympathy.

I don't think you allowed to discuss closed threads.

Exactly! I really wish the option were removed.

I requested a thread get deleted once.

I wrote a vent and then IMO got beaten up for it. All I did was write what happen IMO (yes I am aware it was only MO) and I was told by MANY DISers that I was airing dirty laundry and bringing my “battle” to the public.

Now I never said who I was venting about, but some members got very nasty on the thread and I was actually crying. How sad is that! How can people be viscous when another member just wanted to vent to people of the same “family” (so many people on this board claim to be DIS family).

After a few days of thinking about it, I figured if I would have written the same words but said it happened to a friend or on some other web board then people would not have been so nasty to me.

Wow, all I can say is that the idea of talking about just about anything and people sharing in a polite (positive or negative) way is a bunch of gunk. Some (not all) people on this board are just nasty and enjoy being viscous. It’s like they are bullies at school.

That’s my story.

(you can take your punches now… this time I will not let bullies get the best of me)

I have asked for several of my OP threads to be closed over the many years here, but only where they were originally posted in a serious sense (example, birthday of a past deceased President) and some several 'people' (now long gone themselves, thankfully) took the thread down a totally different course, of ridicule and buffoonery. Or, where, again, a benign thread in the OP turned into a free-for-all of accusations, etc. I think over the 7 years I have been here I have asked for 3 of my OP threads to be closed. I do think it a good option to have available, JMO.

i too have been at the mercy of many sharp tounge people here . i am glad that it was locked.. But i also know there are many opions out there in the cyber world , and i can choose not to read them. just as i have the right to choose to take my toys else where.. :hippie: not all is fare in love and war..
