Wonderful as usual!! I just love your work!!

Where can I find that ? Is there a pattern #? Is CarlaC like Butrick or Simplicity?

CarlaC's patterns are sold on www.youcanmakethis.com . They are sold as an e-book that you download and print. Her directions are VERY detailed. An entire book can be 80-100 pages. The instructions are very easy to follow, and go together very quickly. I HIGHLY recommend her patterns. Go to www.youcanmakethis.com go to the bottom of the page and search by author, look up CarlaC and you'll see all of her patterns.

I am trying to not be offended by all the conversation about "smartly" dressed children. I am not winning that battle.
Lauren goes to preschool in leggings and tshirts or sweaters. She is there to play, run, jump, not for a fashion show. Her outfits are typically from Target or Childrens Place but she does have a few Gymboree outfits also. I will not send her to school in dresses/skirts because those are a little more dangerous on the bark mulch covered playground. Does she look clean and presentable? Yes, in my opinion she does.
Who are you to judge what I dress my child in?

Edited to add, there are days Lauren does not match. She may have on orange pants, pink shirt and green shoes. She picked it out herself so I will let her wear it as long as it is weather appropriate.

I'm in this camp as well. My children have two wardrobes - one for school and one for "other" - outings with us, weekends, special occasion, etc. School clothes are nice and the kids look good in them, but they are clothes that I would not be heartbroken over if they get stained or torn. Teachers have far too much on their plates and I simply cannot expect them to fuss over if my kids are kept neat and clean while in their care. So I dress them accordingly. When we are out as a family or if the kids have something special going on, then I will dress them in their "other" clothes. This includes their custom things I've made, any item that was $$, or anything else I'm especially attached to.

Of course, I think my kids are adorable no matter what they have on or how their hair looks. While we do try to teach them to have pride in their appearance, but also not to judge others by looks alone. There's a fine line. We have no idea what is going on in the lives of strangers, so I don't think it's right to judge how other moms dress their kids - maybe they are having a bad day, maybe the kid picked their own clothes, maybe dad dressed them :rotfl: We just don't know.

Bottom line: Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Sorry - I don't mean to sound preachy, it just hurts my heart to think that other moms are judging one another based on how well-dressed they or their kids are. We have enough to worry about in this world.

Well my flights are booked, or I might just consider it. Where are you staying?

More on the ironing and smocked dresses. I love smocked dresses. I think they are a simple yet elegant look on little girls. Trust me, I have NEVER seen another child in any smocking here on the Eastern Shore ( below that line) of MD. However I wore it as a child, and my mother and grandmother ADORE my DD in smocking, but they were both raised in Philly. Not Southern at all. Now my Mom and esp my grandmother are also big ironers. Sheets and boxers. I just don't have time. We all wear uniforms here, and they are permanant press, so while you can tell if they have been ironed, they don't NEED it. I wouldn't dream of going to church or to a party or school function without ironing. Well let me clarify that...my DH irons. So I leave the ironing and the things that need to be ironed for him. He is awesome at it, and it dosen't annoy the crap out of him...so it's his job! It is one of the nice things about marrying a guy raised by a single Mom.

I iron sheets too! The way we make our beds the flat sheet goes face down and then folds over the comforter. It looks awful when the top is all wrinkly and bunched up. I have even been known to starch the top! :rotfl:

Thanks! I can tell you that I have never seen another child in a smocked dress in Maryland. Other than the Gris' daughter I do not know another of kid in MD that own smocked clothes. My Mom is from North Carolina and she was dressed in smocked clothing. That is how she dressed me in and I in turn dress my girls in smocking. LOL

I find most of their smocked dresses on ebay. We have one boutique in Annapolis that carried a few dresses and they are normally over $75. My oldest was excited to see other little girls in smocked bishops at WDW. She calls the bishops Sophee's dresses. (She was also three at the time. Time Flies!!)

Do not get me even started on some of the kids at preschool. I was looking at last years class picture and it is amazing. Some of the kids look like they have pjs on. I agree you do not have to have a lot of money to be presentable. Now, I know my girls have a flair for the dramatics so the are a little fancier. ;)

We went to a birthday party last weekend. There was one little girl that was in sweatpants, a long sleeve shirt that was way too short, purple socks and old sneakers. I was so upset because her mother works for a really good financial firm, had on nice clothes, carried a nice bag and even said to another mother . . . email me and I will have my assistant put it on my calendar.

Wait, I'm from MD and I smock. There is a great store that sells smocking supplies as well as finished dresses. Its called Tomorrow's Treasures and is in Crofton. We live in Annapolis and do see some smocked dresses at church and at nursery school special occasions or performances. But I am seeing less than I did when DD9 was younger. Little girls should look like little girls. And for me that means, smocked and boutique style dresses. In our house we have play clothes and party clothes. As far as that mom sending her child to a party in sweats sounds awful. My kids dress way better than me, I'm usually the one in sweats!

I didnt want to offend anyone.
What I am in reference to is the moms that are dressed to the nines and the kids are covered in dirt wearing clothes that are too small or way too large. I let Jenna wear what she wants, but if it is too small, too big, heavily stained, or torn she wont wear it in public. The children at Jens school half the time dont have clean uniforms, or they dont fit right and their hair is barely brushed. You do not have to have bows in your hair to look clean, but brushed hair does looks nicer. Jenna is also not in Preschool anymore and looks are starting to matter to her peers, so for that reason I make sure she is clean.

I hate seeing dirty kids but with DD2 (who is #3), I have to admit that she is so picky about her clothes I'm usually just happy to get her dressed in anything. She goes to school after lunch and every once in awhile she has a little smudge of lunch on her shirt and I just wipe it off. :rolleyes1 With my first two, I would have had them change the whole outfit before leaving the house!

I'm out. I enjoy sewing, but you can't make a comment on this board without people attacking what you said. I keep my DD clean. I don't battle her on what she wears. And I am not shallow, but there are plenty of people on here that are.

I love Tomorrows Treasures!! :) I think they have had the same four dresses in their shop for two years though. :) One of the ladies that works their teaches smocking classes. I love their heirloom room.

The one boutique I mentioned in Annapolis is The Giant Peach in West Annapolis. Then there is a shop on Maryland Ave called Matilda. Those are the only two places I know of that sell any smocked clothing. The Last Call at Arundel Mills from time to time has smocked Baby Lulu but it is hit or miss.

I am from Annapolis too. I actually grew up in East Port. My DH and I moved out of Annapolis about 7 years ago but we are only 20 minutes away.

*** I think Jessica was right by saying the conversation was started by ironing. My girls dress a little fancier and that works for them. I do expect my girls to say mostly clean at school. I can say that because I was a teacher and I did my best to send my students home as clean as possible. We wore smocks a lot. ;)

I am not going to lie it really did bother me when I saw the little girl at the party. It was hard to see her mother with a $400 Coach bag and the little girl wore filthy sneakers. It just did not seem right to me.

I do not judge others on their appearances and do not teach my children to do so. People judge me all the time. I gained weight this past year and I am judged on a daily basis. One mother at the bday party asked me why don't I have gastric bypass surgery. WTH!!! I did not even really know her.

I am raising my children to be confident, caring and compassionate children. Being the mother of girls their self esteem is on my mind quite a bit. My goal is to have well adjusted well rounded children. So what if they want to wear a pettiskirt to the park. In a few years I will not be able to get a pettiskirt if I tried. I am just going to enjoy it while it lasts.

1.)Strangely, I think that actually sounds like a lot of fun!! I sometimes leave the washing machine open and just stand there staring at it for much longer than most people would consider "normal"!! :rotfl2: It's entrancing!

I had to laugh at that becuase ever since I got my front loaders...I do the same thing. I LOVE the clear doors they have...I have sat wand sadly watched entire loads wash!:lmao: Now that's weird!

OMGosh yes,Alicia has DEFINITELY suffered another loss. It breaks my heart to see everything she has had to go through. It is so sad.

WOW she is beautiful and that dress is gorgeous!!

Beth, how far along was Alicia? Is she doing ok now?

Yes, like Shannon said, you get them at Youcanmakethis. The BEST patterns EVER!!!! You will not regret buying one of Carla's patterns!!! She is Louiesmom on here. She writes great patterns AND is one of the sweetest people ever!

Oh thank goodness!!! I was really hoping someone else would say they did this too!!! OOOH, a frontloader!! I've never wanted one before, but now that you say this, I'm thinking maybe I need one! It would be really cool if they had a light inside like an oven!

I'm out. I enjoy sewing, but you can't make a comment on this board without people attacking what you said. I keep my DD clean. I don't battle her on what she wears. And I am not shallow, but there are plenty of people on here that are.

I understand.

I didn't read nor participate in the great iron debate. But I too have been recently hurt by members on this board. I have been an active member of this thread since the get go. I have cried with members, prayed with and for members, celebrated and supported. I am not shallow either but I do have feelings.

To all the wonderful people I have met on this thread(and yes you know who you are;) )-Thank you!

Can someone here please direct me to some simple instructions for big girl (read older teen) hair bows. DD's high school softball team is in need of some matching ones. They all wear ponytails and wear the type bow that has longer streamers. I hope you know what kind I mean.

I love seeing all the great things y'all make. My sweet daughter-in-law is expecting a baby girl the end of March. I can't wait until she is old enough for me to dust off my sewing machine.

Thanks,

Penny

Please don't go! I love seeing your creations and hearing what you have to say!!

Did you check the bookmarks? There are a lot of bow directions in there.

I have a question for all of you Northerners!!!!

Yesterday in class it was pointed out to me that ironing clothes on a daily basis is a Southern thing. So my question is Do you people who were born and raised up north iron your clothes on a daily basis or just for special occasions?

I only iron for church, but I thought it was a Colorado thing since the standard uniform here is jeans and t's. In fact because I do iron for church, we are some of the most dressed up people in attendance :rotfl:!

Can you guys believe how close we are to starting a new thread!!!?? Already!!

I think it is important to remember that discussion boards are meant for that . . . discussion. Everyone does not have to have the same opinion. Really how boring would that be. It is evident that everyone on this board loves and cares for their children. It is not a big deal if you child wears a pettiskirt or a sweatpants to school so with that being said I do not need to say anything else. You all have seen pics of my girls so you know they are happy little Fancy Nancy's. :)

If you find some can you post. I need to find something for tee ball next month! Thanks!!!

I've been looking through the bookmarked bows. So many cute ones but all I've found so far look like little girl bows.

I don't think I've mentioned it here, but I probalby should have! Everynight around 10PM or so, Becca's Dad, David sends out an update bout Becca. They asked me to go ahead and post them on her PTR. I've been updating it every night for a few days now, so if you were waiting for an update, go check it out! Becca seems to be doing better, but I'm still worried sick about her.

They are planning on Becca being in the hospital for quite some time, 8 weeks, so please continue the well wishes and prayers for this very special little girl. If you read her PTR, please leave a note. Mandy doesn't have much internet access, but I know she enjoys reading what everyone writes!

Thanks guys for the outpooring of love and caring you have shown for this wonderful family!
