I am trying to not be offended by all the conversation about "smartly" dressed children. I am not winning that battle.
Lauren goes to preschool in leggings and t shirts or sweaters. She is there to play, run, jump, not for a fashion show. Her outfits are typically from Target or Children's Place but she does have a few Gymboree outfits also. I will not send her to school in dresses/skirts because those are a little more dangerous on the bark mulch covered playground. Does she look clean and presentable? Yes, in my opinion she does.
Who are you to judge what I dress my child in?

Edited to add, there are days Lauren does not match. She may have on orange pants, pink shirt and green shoes. She picked it out herself so I will let her wear it as long as it is weather appropriate.

I am not trying to offend at all. :lovestruc My daughters choose to dress the way they do. I do not force them at all. If they chose to pants/jeans etc. . . they would. I cannot get my oldest in pants. I am a firm believer in picking my battles. Pants are not one of them! She plays, runs, and jumps just like all the other kids. She comes home with more sand in her shoes than the sandbox has left and mulch stuck to her tights like velcro. We dump out her shoes and pick of the mulch. No Biggie!!

It did bother me when I saw a woman carry a $400 purse on a blackberry when her daughter was wearing a shirt that showed two inches of her back. It is February and freezing!

When my daughter turned four last spring I took her to the Gymboree outlet to buy some spring clothes. I saw pink polka dotted shorts and asked her if she wanted them. She said, "Shorts are pants with little legs. NO! I am not wearing them- skirts or dresses."

First, the Vida is not hard at all. It is quite simple.
Second, the applique was not all that complicated. Mickey Heads can be tricky but I am sure you could do it. Feel free to case the Mickey Head flowers.
And I second the Downy Wrinkle Release! Amazing stuff.

Thanks, I so wish I could take you up on your offer! I am askeered ( who here started that phrase??? Spongie??) Anyway, I have only done Carla C's patterns....read VERY novice sewere please:)

The Downy Wrinkle releaser i s wonder when traveling. Plus you can get the small sized to go in your carry on's. I actually like the smell of it as well.

OOOOH, can I come over and use your dryer??? That sounds so cool!

Of course you can! We can run it, and press our noses against the glass and Oooh and Aaah

The Picture day talk reminds me, that the girls' school has planned Sprint Picture Day for ST. PATRICK'S DAY!! :confused3 I predict a LOT of GREEN outfits in the pictures!!! :rotfl2:

WEll since this is the ABSOLUTE BEST HOLIDAY EVER I think more picture days should be on this day. My DD will be sporting a lovely smocked top and a kickin green petti. Or maybe a peasant top and gauchos. Or maybe a strip work jumper, or a twirl skirt. Good thing I don't think St. Patty's needs to only be celebrated on one day:) and YES I do have that many St. Pattys fabrics...and they are from last year:)

I cried when I found out our 3rd was going to be a girl because of this & the hair thing. I was a tomboy & a jock. I was so thankful when I had boys, boys are supposed to be a bit rough around the edges. Then came our surprise, Hazel. And she is every bit as froo-froo as her namesake. Apparently femininity skips a generation. She refuses to wear pants, changes her clothes 4x ady & wants to wear bows to bed!

I cried when I found out my DD was a girl as well. What the heck was I going to do with a girl? BUT it has been really fun, and my feisty prissy dirt loving girl looks like a little lady playing in the dirt in her pettiskirts!

Waa sad1:

So close, so close, and yet, sooo far....
Are you SURE you won't stay an extra day???

Well my flights are booked, or I might just consider it. Where are you staying?

More on the ironing and smocked dresses. I love smocked dresses. I think they are a simple yet elegant look on little girls. Trust me, I have NEVER seen another child in any smocking here on the Eastern Shore ( below that line) of MD. However I wore it as a child, and my mother and grandmother ADORE my DD in smocking, but they were both raised in Philly. Not Southern at all. Now my Mom and esp my grandmother are also big ironers. Sheets and boxers. I just don't have time. We all wear uniforms here, and they are permanant press, so while you can tell if they have been ironed, they don't NEED it. I wouldn't dream of going to church or to a party or school function without ironing. Well let me clarify that...my DH irons. So I leave the ironing and the things that need to be ironed for him. He is awesome at it, and it dosen't annoy the crap out of him...so it's his job! It is one of the nice things about marrying a guy raised by a single Mom.

Another thing to think about when dressing your child is your child
s feelings.

Hazel really didn't start this whole dressing-up thing until she started Mom's Day Out & all the other little girls were sooooo dressed-up w/ bows in their hair (you see she has no hair yet).

And I remember when my oldest went to Montesorri (which is not froo-froo) & he would no longer wear a ti-shirt that didn't have something "super dooper" on it

I can't believe at 2 & 3 kids already feel pressured to fit in?!

I didnt want to offend anyone.
What I am in reference to is the moms that are dressed to the nines and the kids are covered in dirt wearing clothes that are too small or way too large. I let Jenna wear what she wants, but if it is too small, too big, heavily stained, or torn she wont wear it in public. The children at Jens school half the time dont have clean uniforms, or they dont fit right and their hair is barely brushed. You do not have to have bows in your hair to look clean, but brushed hair does looks nicer. Jenna is also not in Preschool anymore and looks are starting to matter to her peers, so for that reason I make sure she is clean.

You're the first person who said that to me, makes me feel better. Sometimes I admit it to the wrong people & I get this look like I'm Cindy's evil stepmom.

My DH does the ironing too!

Then came our surprise, Hazel. And she is every bit as froo-froo as her namesake. !
I just have to say that I love the name HAZEL....it was my grandmother's name and it is also my little niece's name. Our little Hazel is definitley more of a tomboy though....hahaha.

When my daughter turned four last spring I took her to the Gymboree outlet to buy some spring clothes. I saw pink polka dotted shorts and asked her if she wanted them. She said, "Shorts are pants with little legs. NO! I am not wearing them- skirts or dresses."
And that is what Jenna told me this year too. I told her that I would make her Summer clothes. She has picked some of the girliest fabric ever and wants all dresses. I told her that she had to have some shorts for outside play.

I THINK and just THINKING here, that with the whole ironing convo what was trying to be said was that kids could be dressed in anything and still look presentable. Then it went to the fancy talk.

Dallas is dressed in TCP and Old Navy most days and I actually prefer those 2 stores to any other. I am not a fan of Gymboree at all and own all of 2 sweaters from there and a couple pair of jeans (the jeans were a smoking deal).

It is how the child is presented. I can't stand it when see clothes on a child 3x too small for them. That is a big pet peeve of mine and often seen around here. Usually shirts too short including the sleeves.

Shhhh...keep this a secret..but are you like me, when you see kids wearing sweats or wrinkly clothes out in public and think...either Mom is having a bad day or she just doesnt help her kids get dressed??
I do not understand frumpy kids. You do not have to have any money to have your kids looking "smart"
I wish I lived in an area where everyone dressed their kids in customs or smocked clothes!! I bet your kids always look FAB-U-Loooooossss!!!
Oh I feel the same way! It drives me nuts when people have their kids all raggedy! then I meet my girlfriend whom every day dresses her kids nice but then with in minute both her girls clothes are trashed! Never fails! :rotfl:

i will say it irks me for pictures and shows the kids do at school if the kids aren't in 'sunday best' so to speak.

Sure I make my kids fancy clothes and I buy my kids nice clothes but you know what Wally world has some cute things too( i also buy stuff from there!) I truly believe you don't have to spend a lot of money to make your kids look nice. Heck I got some really cute things for Nik at Wal mart last week on sale for $3!!!

I iron sheets too! The way we make our beds the flat sheet goes face down and then folds over the comforter. It looks awful when the top is all wrinkly and bunched up. I have even been known to starch the top! :rotfl:

Do not get me even started on some of the kids at preschool. I was looking at last years class picture and it is amazing. Some of the kids look like they have pjs on. I agree you do not have to have a lot of money to be presentable. Now, I know my girls have a flair for the dramatics so the are a little fancier. ;)

We went to a birthday party last weekend. There was one little girl that was in sweatpants, a long sleeve shirt that was way too short, purple socks and old sneakers. I was so upset because her mother works for a really good financial firm, had on nice clothes, carried a nice bag and even said to another mother . . . email me and I will have my assistant put it on my calendar.
Nik does do the sweat pant thing to but my little spoiled brat has to have the sparkly ones for Justice with the matching shirt and hoodie and matching sneakers! Gotta love Mema's!

Please don't be offended! I don't think anyone is meaning to offend. like i said you don't have to spend a lot of money to be dresses nice and there are some VERY cute jeans and Tshirts out there! i have seen some of the stuff you have made and it is adorable!

Nikki has always been al about her clothes I thank my mom for that! she started in utero making sure she was dressed in full ensembles. If Nikki didn;t care a lot clothes I wouldn't push her to wear certain things at all except for picture day and concert day.

So please don't be offended!

I've made this dress. I did line it, but only because the top layer was eyelet. I don't know how they took out the side zipper & made it snap in the back, but that would make it a lot easier to put on a squirmy little girl.

I did have to add a panel to the front because it was so low, I don't know if that was me or the pattern. I really liked how it turned out though.

very pretty!

So it looks like if you want your DH to iron, move to MD!!;)

My DH went to a private high school where they had to have an ironed shirt every day, and I just let him keep doing it!:rolleyes1

But I will add, mostly none of our other clothes need ironing and when they do, I usually do it. (or take it to the cleaners):rolleyes1

Oops! Rereading it, I realized maybe my post sounded a little whatever, so just hoping everyone knows I was joking!

As far as my kids go, if their body is covered and weather appropriate, I don't worry about it. I mostly get rid of things that are holey and stained anyway. Also, most of our clothes are pink so they automatically match right?

The one thing that did get me though is when I taught Sunday School, I had to be @ church early on
sundays. So I would pick out the kid's clothes and DH would do tights, shoes and hair and bring them later. Oy vey, sometimes I just had to look away. No one minded though.

I just have to say that I love the name HAZEL....it was my grandmother's name and it is also my little niece's name. Our little Hazel is definitley more of a tomboy though....hahaha.
Hazel was my DH's mom. She was a WAC in WWII, but also VERY feminine. She made this dress.

Nope! I don't add tulle unless it's really necessary - I can't put it in the dryer if I do. :thumbsup2

Thank you, so you don't think I'll need the boning for the heavier fabric?

Very well put! I was thinking the same thing. I have two children (DS14 & DD5). My son does dress himself very nice, but my daughter and my son at her age as well are allowed to dress themselves. At that young age they do not always pick what I would consider matching or "smart". But, really i believe as parents we need to pick our battles! What my kids wear is not a battle I choose to win! I win the battles that matter...my kids are wellbehaved, kind, loving, intelligent & just great individuals with a great amount of self confidence. I believe that self confidence partly comes from having parents that allow them to make choices & not criticize those choices. Save the battle for times when they really need your guidance.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not offended...I just feel the conversation in general, the way it was going, was rather shallow.

Just my opinion...but thought I'd share! :)

I need a little advice.

I want to make a sundress just like one my DD already has.

2008_090808Disney0364.jpg

I found a pattern : NewLook 6688, that looks just like it, but

6688.jpg

When I go online & read reviews there are a few things they changed & I want to know if I make these cahnges do you think I will get the results I'm after.

1) eliminate side lap zipper > put in center back snaps

2) eliminate skirt lining & tulle ruffle > put boning in hem

(it gets very hot here -99+, a lined skirt w/itchy tulle won't get much wear, but I want the skirt to look full)

I want to make 2 of theses. One fabric is light cotton, but one if med/heavy.

Thank you!
Melani

Are you sure you don't just want to do CarlaC's Simply Sweet? It looks very similar and is so easy!

Huh?! What did I miss?! Who is close to me? I knew I should have read instead of skimminglast night!!
sarahkaiserdse she is in Wayne. I was skimming last night too! I loved the storybook outfit you made! I was wondering if it would be too young for Lydia, but it looks adorable on Emily! I can't help but shiver when I see her outside with no coat on though!

1.)Of course you can! We can run it, and press our noses against the glass and Oooh and Aaah

2.)WEll since this is the ABSOLUTE BEST HOLIDAY EVER I think more picture days should be on this day. My DD will be sporting a lovely smocked top and a kickin green petti. 3.)Well my flights are booked, or I might just consider it. Where are you staying?.

1.)Strangely, I think that actually sounds like a lot of fun!! I sometimes leave the washing machine open and just stand there staring at it for much longer than most people would consider "normal"!! :rotfl2: It's entrancing!

2.)LOL! I actually thought of you when I saw when picture day was! I don't do St.Patty's day, but Brian does. Lydia is SOOO excited, because Steph sent her a St.Patty outfit! When she saw it she said, "There is NO way I'm getting pinched this year!" Which is REALLY funny because this is her first year of school, so I don't know how she found out about the pinching thing! She looks fabulous in green, so her pictures will look great! :thumbsup2

3.) Aww, shoot! We are off property on 192. We have a timeshare there. We still need rooms for Tuesday trhough Saturday though!

I love all the cute pictures and the trip reports from your dis meet! The kids are so dang cute.

I did keep going today because I knew this was going to be a shirt that would take several tries. This is the very first one so I know it is bad. DH did print in reverse for me and I also need to fix a few things but Hunter is so sweet he just loves it.

th_darthshirt.jpg

I think it came out very nice!

I LOVE this dress!!!

I've been gone for a day, and have almost 10 pages ot catch up on!! I hope I didn't miss anything, I just skimmed over the pages!!

I LOVED the storybook fabric from Walmart and had to make something with it.

I love it!! Now, I have to have this fabric :)

I've had this Caterpillar fabric for months now and finally got around to making something with it!! DD had so much fun taking pictures so you are going to get too many pictures!! (And don't worry TJ it was almost 40 out when we took pictures!! ;) )

She is so photogenic. Those pictures are great.

I find the ironing answers interesting. Around here it seems that everything gets ironed. You will actually see people walking around with ironed T-shirts, Jeans and everything else. I never really gave it much thought until one of my classmates mentioned it. He's from somewhere up north and said that his mom didn't iron anything, that they just pull it fresh from the dryer. I have to admit that I also do that, but if something is wrinkly I will iron it.

Ok, I am from Texas. I have lived here all my life. About ironing...I will if I have to, but I do everything in my power to avoid it. I buy clothes that don't wrinkle easily, I pull it straight out of the dryer, put it back in the dryer to release the wrinkles, use wrinkle releaser.... If those things don't work or if it is a special outfit, then, I will iron it. I think I have been able to avoid most ironing, because my husband doesn't wear the button ups with jeans. Although, I would be happy to iron a nice crisp white long sleeve button up and some wranglers if he decided to put them on. ;) Think Harry Connick Jr. in Hope Floats. YUMMY!!

I have a question for all of you Northerners!!!!

Yesterday in class it was pointed out to me that ironing clothes on a daily basis is a Southern thing. So my question is Do you people who were born and raised up north iron your clothes on a daily basis or just for special occasions?
We are in Maryland- Mason Dixon line. We iron clothes everyday. My girls wear customs or smocked clothing. Maybe I have more of a Southern style of dressing my children but we do not "do" wrinkles! LOL

I have to add my 2 cents... I'm from Maryland and I only iron when sewing. I'm a wrinkled mess :lmao: I have to ask, what are you wearing that needs to be ironed? I have a friend who lives in Charleston, SC who irons the t-shirts she wears to the gym and irons her jeans! That is kookoo crazy to me! I hang a lot of our clothes (including customs) right from the washer so they dry somewhat wrinkle free. Good enough!

I've seen this fabric on the boards and saw it at Walmart yesterday... now I'm wishing I had bought it!

I did do a lot of retail therapy in Walmart's fabric section. Bought a ton of stuff. Thanks for everyone's well wishes about my cat, he is still not home. I especially like the story about Teresa's cat being lost for so long and still making it home. I'm still hoping.

So I'm sewing away last night, working on the bottom ruffle of DD2's Birthday dress (stripwork jumper) and the machine breaks 2 needles. Then stops working. AHHHHHH!!!!! It stopped picking up the bobbin thread. I took everything apart and cleaned it out really well and still no luck. Guess I'm going to have to take it in. That means I'll be without a machine for a few days. :sad2: What will I do? Hmmm... I can think of a few things :laundy: :surfweb: I need a little smiley for cleaning my house :rotfl2:

OMG...That came out so cute!! Great Job. I have the fabric too...and am making a dress for my DD for Kindergarden. I actually made my niece a dress and didnt' take any pic's yet (she's only 3 months old), but I made it a 6-9mos...can't wait to post pic's for ya all!!

Alicia - AKSunshine (Isabelle and Levi's mom) - (I think she was the first big give) has suffered another loss, please offer her support if you want/can:

OMGosh yes,Alicia has DEFINITELY suffered another loss. It breaks my heart to see everything she has had to go through. It is so sad.
