I live in an area that is just below the middle class line. My family is at the same income level as the other families in this area, but instead of spending my extra money on beer and cigarettes I spend it at Wal-Mart to get my DD the uniforms and such that she needs for school. A pack of cigarettes is about $15 well that is what I spent on 5 shirts for my DD for school. If it makes me shallow to spend money on my child rather than a disgusting habit than so be it. I am shallow then. My DD is at a stage when her appearance is starting to matter to her and her peers. She is not in Kindergarten or Pre-K. She is also one of the youngest and smallest in her grade level and I want to eliminate as much ridicule attracting things as I can. Her bows and leggings and such help her to fit in with some of the other girls. I was picked on during my school years and it took me a long to be able to have enough self esteem to be able to join a group in my grown up years. I don't want that for her in any way shape or form. It takes Jenna 15 minutes to get ready for school in the morning. That's not a lot of time or effort. It must be shallow to think that a child should have on clean, appropriately sized clothes when going to school.

Some people on here are judging based on one comment and don't know the first thing about the person that they are judging. Get to know me before you label me!

Hi! Can I join in your fun?

Studio Tantrum Hermosa top & Redondo skirt, for Animal Kingdom:

Love everything, but this one is my favorite!

I have a question for all of you Northerners!!!!

Yesterday in class it was pointed out to me that ironing clothes on a daily basis is a Southern thing. So my question is Do you people who were born and raised up north iron your clothes on a daily basis or just for special occasions?

Who would have thought that ironing could be regional? I thought it was a sign of the times with more clothes being made "perma press" and with polyesters. Wash and hang dry when I can. I only iron when it needs to be. I like the look of linen! Wash and wear! My sister used only iron what would show. The cuffs and collar. She no longer has an iron. I iron when I sew or we have something special to wear when going out.

I've been gone for a day, and have almost 10 pages ot catch up on!! I hope I didn't miss anything, I just skimmed over the pages!!

I LOVED the storybook fabric from Walmart and had to make something with it.

I love this pattern. I liked the fabric when everyone was posting about it. But now that I see it on outfits, and the size of the print, I just love it. I'm thinking DN is going to need a dress for something.

I need a little advice.

I want to make a sundress just like one my DD already has.

2008_090808Disney0364.jpg

I found a pattern : NewLook 6688, that looks just like it, but

6688.jpg

When I go online & read reviews there are a few things they changed & I want to know if I make these cahnges do you think I will get the results I'm after.

1) eliminate side lap zipper > put in center back snaps

2) eliminate skirt lining & tulle ruffle > put boning in hem

(it gets very hot here -99+, a lined skirt w/itchy tulle won't get much wear, but I want the skirt to look full)

I want to make 2 of theses. One fabric is light cotton, but one if med/heavy.

Thank you!
Melani

I have this pattern also, but I've yet to make anything with it. A pattern is just that. A pattern. You can do what ever you need to to get the look you want. I'd think he snaps would work, just as long as there is room to fit over the head. I believe someone posted here that they made it as a pull over. When I make a dress, I like to make an under skirt, whether te pattern calls for one or not. The netting goes on the underslip (using the same pattern as the over skirt), goes on the top so it's sandwhiched inbetween the skirt and lining. Doesn't bother the skin at all.

I think it is important to remember that discussion boards are meant for that . . . discussion. Everyone does not have to have the same opinion. Really how boring would that be. It is evident that everyone on this board loves and cares for their children. It is not a big deal if you child wears a pettiskirt or a sweatpants to school so with that being said I do not need to say anything else. You all have seen pics of my girls so you know they are happy little Fancy Nancy's. :)

I'm sure I mananged to miss the drama. I have a hard time keeping up with the thread anyway! I live by the motto that no one can hurt my feelings. Only I can allow my feelings to be hurt. This is def not always easy, but has helped in many situations. I would hate for anyone to leave. Everyone is valuable!!

Ditto! It's also easy to misunderstand what someone has written, becuase you are only seeing the words. When someone is speaking to you, you can understand differently from the inflections in the voice. If I were hurt by what someone has said, I think I'd PM them to see what the real meaning was, rather then stew and brew and be upset. I would hope we'd all get a second chance and see no one leave. After all, this thread is about the love of Disney and sewing.

I want to thank everyone on here for their prayers while dh was looking for a job. He found out today that he got a job with Social Security Disability Termination. I'm so relieved. The last few months have been so stressful for me dealing with everything.

:woohoo:

I have a few questions-when you make the T-Shirts with the Mickey Head out of fabric, Do you wash both the fabric and the T-Shirt first? Neither or just one?

I do wash all fabric and tee/jeans before use. Even if they don't shrink or have loose dye, I want to be sure to get all the sizing out before use. Fabric and clothing manufacturers routinely put sizing on the fabric/clothes to help keep them looking neat at the retail store. It can, though, interfere with the fusible bonding well so a pre-wash is well worth the effort.

I am trying to not be offended by all the conversation about "smartly" dressed children. I am not winning that battle.
Lauren goes to preschool in leggings and tshirts or sweaters. She is there to play, run, jump, not for a fashion show.

I'm in this camp as well. My children have two wardrobes - one for school and one for "other" - outings with us, weekends, special occasion, etc. School clothes are nice and the kids look good in them, but they are clothes that I would not be heartbroken over if they get stained or torn. Teachers have far too much on their plates and I simply cannot expect them to fuss over if my kids are kept neat and clean while in their care. So I dress them accordingly. When we are out as a family or if the kids have something special going on, then I will dress them in their "other" clothes. This includes their custom things I've made, any item that was $$, or anything else I'm especially attached to.

I'm out. I enjoy sewing, but you can't make a comment on this board without people attacking what you said. I keep my DD clean. I don't battle her on what she wears. And I am not shallow, but there are plenty of people on here that are.

I'm sorry to see things end with hurt feelings. I truly don't think there was any intention for that. I really think the focus on clothing is somewhat of a regional issue but also a personal one. Neither is right or wrong just different. In general I let Zoe pick what she wants to wear unless we have a special occasion. Even then, we often compromise.

I'll be honest, I cringe some mornings when I see what Zoe's put on to wear to school. However, she's happy with it so I leave it alone unless there's something that isn't appropriate for school, i.e. too small, stained, etc. I tried to have more influence over what she wore when she started kindergarten last year but she let me know that if she dressed too 'fancy', she wasn't allowed to play on the playground equipment. I never put her in anything for school without realizing it might end up torn or stained but decided it would be easier on Zoe if we stuck to simple clothes that she liked and that didn't stand out as 'fancy'.

BTW - I honestly can't remember ever seeing a child in a smocked garment in my life. I really like the look but it is not something I recall even seeing in stores in the area... although I don't go to children's boutiques often.

The ironing question had nothing at all to do with being better than anyone else. It was a question about differences. If any of the opposing parties knew me than they would know that I love to learn how different people are. Even within the US there are more differences in how things are done on a day to day basis.

And I don't iron unless I have to. Just so you know!!

Oh wow, I didn't realize you didn't do St. Patrick's Day. I sent it on because I thought the green would look nice with her red hair. I'm glad she won't be pinched! :)

I have been so sick, I think Tom brought the flu home on the plane from when he was out of town. This is the first time in two days I have been upright for more than a few minutes.
so sorry you aren't feeling well! Get better soon!

Hi all! I'm just going to jump in and introduce myself :cutie:
I'm Jaime, I have two boys - a toddler and a baby and we're doing our first Disney trip at the end of April!

I love looking at pictures of what people create here! I'm working on several items for my sons for our trip, my niece and nephew for their trip (Disney also), my son's third birthday, plus gifts for the many many other birthdays fast approaching! :scared:
OK really I've just been gathering fabrics so far, I need to finish up a quilt and a bag for myself first :lovestruc

OMG I can't imagine spending 15 bucks on cancer sticks! :sad2:
I don't think your shallow at all! :grouphug:
I agree with you, my kids come before beer and other bad things. But with that being said I am from up north and I hate ironing!!! That is why they make dry cleaners.. :woohoo: :rotfl: I would much rather pay someone to iron....:rotfl2: So no, I don't iron daily...only maybe about twice a month (And by that time I have piles of stuff to iron)

However the conversation started, it was started and people were making comments about what other children were wearing. I felt uncomfortable about it and felt like others were judging people outside there own circle.

I did not call anyone shallow. I did not call anyone out for anything beyond judging others without knowing the full story.

I am sure I won't be missed. I think I am done with this board for now, maybe forever, if people can get all worked up over a debate such as this.

I made comments in reference to the people that are in my circle. No one made a comment about anyone on this board. I was not offended by what you said, but it was what someone else said that really offended me. Your DD is not in the same grade level as Jenna and does not have to deal with the same pressures. The playground at Jenna's level is becoming more about socializing than playing on the jungle gym.

Welcome, I look forward to seeing what you will create.

I do not judge others on their appearances and do not teach my children to do so. People judge me all the time. I gained weight this past year and I am judged on a daily basis. One mother at the bday party asked me why don't I have gastric bypass surgery. WTH!!! I did not even really know her.

QUOTE]

I forgot to comment on this before... I cannot believe someone would say that to you! What nerve!! I think that people judging others on weight is just intolerable. I have a very skinny friend who first met me in my thinner days and I remember her saying something about an overweight person that was just terrible. She said something to the effect about how "lazy" the person was and how "she needed to stop stuffing her face with junk." Now that I am a good 40 lbs heavier than I was then, I wonder what she must think of me. Its very upsetting that people don't have more understanding of each other. The more I've gotten to know this thin friend, the more I realize how insecure she is in her own body. So I guess I can understand where her overweight comments came from but it still isn't right. "Let's just all get along." :hippie:

FYI...It was not my intention to offend anyone & certainly hope that we can all have our opinions and express them on this board as adults. When I said that the "Conversation" (not one individual) was somewhat shallow - I was referencing the comment below about "frumpy" kids & looking "smart".

"when you see kids wearing sweats or wrinkly clothes out in public and think...either Mom is having a bad day or she just doesnt help her kids get dressed??
I do not understand frumpy kids. You do not have to have any money to have your kids looking "smart"
I wish I lived in an area where everyone dressed their kids in customs or smocked clothes!! I bet your kids always look FAB-U-Loooooossss!!!"

My feeling on this topic & all topics on this or any board is that we can all learn from each other. I do not judge anyone and for the record, I make my daughters Customs and love to dress her in them. She plays in them gets them dirty and I wash them & iron them for her to wear again! My point is that I do not judge other parents (regardless of their handbag), for I do not know what their life is truly like and what their circumstances may be.

That's it...I am here on this board to look at and share wonderful Custom Creations - Just wanted to clarify my comment, as it clearly offended some.

Hope you all have a great day & hope that we can all continue to share our creations & opinions (which should not all be the same, as we are all individuals - right?).

Yeah, it is a good day. I am so happy for your family. Thank God for the good job.

I hope you are feeling better soon. Remember to drink a lot of liquid and rest. Take it easy even as you start to feel better.

I did get to sew a bit today. Mom got the other T shirt for me and I did my fish shirt too. Of course having a TBI, I love Dori!

Should I make shorts and skirt out of this material to match the shirts or is too much??
fishwithfabric.jpg

I saw on the Butterick pattern for one of Hunter's shirt a cool pair of long shorts. They were funky. Hunter hates when I say that! But they would look cute or just a pair of regular shorts. Again, is the fish material over the top?

I don't, but Brian does and so does Lyddy. She looks SO pretty in the green with her red hair! I loved it on her! And SHE loved it too! You were so sweet to send it!

I just can't believe people would call children "Frumpy"...:rotfl: They are kids for crying out loud...not some mini-me's... KWIM?.. That is all..

BTW I love that fish fabric :woohoo:

First...I love all of your outfits. Sorry I haven't commented on them before now...you guys are going to look great!

I like the fishy for a skirt and shorts. I think it would look great!

Steph...hope you are feeling better! Katie stayed home from school today because she was throwing up this morning at 5 am! Bless her heart...it must be hard having a mommy with a gag reflex like mine!:lmao: Everytime she throws up...I gag! It is really kinda funny the sounds that come from our bathroom!:rotfl2: She is feeling better now and is mad she messed up her perfect attendance at school. She may never get over it!

I must have missed something, maybe I should go back and read the posts. I thought people were upset about the ironing. Tells you how clueless I am (maybe its just sleep deprivation with the new baby!) I work in a public middle school where the kids wear uniforms. It breaks my heart when I see kids in the same dirty uniform all week. Their peers do make fun of them and it very unfortunate because its not the kid's fault. I work with the social worker and school psych so I know a lot of the family histories. For a lot of our kids its truely tragic. These parents aren't buying cigarettes instead of uniforms, they are buying crack. I cried every day for the first few months I worked there. You are by no means shallow for wanting the best for your child, trust me.

I am just sick about Becca! I have been keeping up on the updates and I think about her often through out the day! Everytime I see sophias little tiny belly scar I think of how fortunate we are and that on the very same day she got her scar Becca had brain surgery, how my little baby is healing and how Becca is still there in the hospital. I can't even imagine how her parents get through the days at her bedside! And the long road ahead!
I didn't comment before but I have been thinking about what Shannon said about how these kids have affected us! Affected me!!! How lucky are we that they share their lives with us to allow us to give to them. With Becca health declining so soon after her trip it has definitely given me a new perspective on the whole project!
The Big Give has been very meaningful to me and I know others feel the same way! I am so glad we have the opportunity to do this TOGETHER!! :goodvibes

Have a great day everyone!! :grouphug: :flower3:

I have to say that the whole ironing/ dressing kids debate has put voice to something I have really been struggling with here lately. My DD will be changing schools for K in the fall and going to a true private school from a chuch daycare/preschool. I have been really worried about her being accepted/ liked at her new school, and wondering what to do about wardrobe ect. I cringe at the thought of dressing her in heirloom clothes, name brands ect just so that she will fit in/ be accepted by other kids, but on the other hand I would feel horrible if something I dressed her in made someone make fun of her. I really think that it is different here in the south. There are these unwritten rules about how things are done and a social strata underlies everthing we do wether we like it or not. I honestly don't think people realize sometimes that they are judging people on appearences, but the do. Sometimes I just don't know how to respond to that. You can tell by looking at moms and their kids whch "group" they belong to and it is obvious that the group with money/ influence/ country club membership ectwants NOTHING to do with the group that doesn't. They view peole who do not dress/act/spend like they do as uncultured, uneducated hicks. In our town it ever extends to zipcodes and midtown vs west Mobile. Peole in midtown think of west mobile as the sticks and people in wast mobile view midtown as snobby. I gues what I am trying to do is explain to those of you who don't deal with it what atightrope act it is. At least for me it comes down to the fact that I want my kid to have friends, be accepted, and have the opportunities that i didn't. I was on the outside looking in a lot of thetime as a kid because of the class structure here and i don't want that for her.

I totally get what you are saying. I wasn't apart of Becca's give...although reading the PTR and all...her smile had me hooked! I pray for her everyday...several times a day.

The project means so much to me...it gave me direction when I needed it and the satisfaction I get from seeing a smile...
On the last give I was a part of as you know I made the first clothes for anyone outside my family...I WORRIED so much over that shirt.:sad2: When I checked the post this weekend and saw that Christian had the shirt, I just cried. How is it that I made a differance that day? I had "met" you all and I found a way...Thank you for that! Not until recently did my family even know I was doing it. It was my thing until DH saw the shirt I made for Christian and he said that a lucky little boy would be getting that. Nope, I'm the lucky one!

THIS JUST NEEDED TO BE REPEATED! If there is one thing that I have learned THE HARD WAY - it is that we may not all always agree, but it is worth it to get over our differences so that we don't cheat ourselves out of the joy that comes from being in a group like this. Not every day is good. Sometimes there are several days that aren't good. That's ok. Turn off the computer and walk away. But don't cheat yourself out of the joy that may be here tomorrow. There is no amount of frustration that is worth it!
