Class of 2022- High School Parents

My daughter chose to apply to U of SC because from what she has heard it is similar to FSU in environment. It also has her major of studio art (plus marketing). We still need to visit the school. We've never been to South Carolina. UGA sounds like a great option but it is kind of a reach for her, I think, but she did apply.

Gotcha! All the friends we have there have been pleased with everything.

anyone been to Disney recently, or going soon?
We are going over Thanksgiving (finally!) and I’m beyond excited.
I gotta figure out this Genie+ and LL stuff.

I was supposed to go with my sister for our annual trip early November, however, we decided skip this year due to so much going on. I'm glad we did. I spent a LOT of money going back and forth to MI while my dad was sick. We are going to do it next November. We were just there in August for a day at Epcot and 3 days at the Dolphin. I HAD to work that into the Florida college visits. We had a great time, as usual. I'm really excited to go back and experience the changes.

Yacht Club- we have always loved the Epcot resort area.
Definitely have to work in some Disney if nearby for college visits- good thinking!

Yacht Club is one of my favorites and it's even better now than when we stayed there. You are going to have a great time.

I called a couple of my daughter's colleges to discuss the GPA calculation of her high school. FSU had already recalculated her GPA as a 3.83. The admissions officer I spoke with also encouraged us to change her application to summer semester (to increase her chances of admission). He said they have so many applications for fall that they are no longer offering people summer semester and they have to outright apply for it. We did switch it.

UT Dallas told me they don't look at GPA, just grades and other qualifications, taking a holistic view of the application rather than just focusing on grades.

Maybe this information will help someone! I definitely feel better about her chances of getting in to FSU now. If this fails I found out they do offer a pathway to getting in through going to a local community college and transferring after a couple of semesters. I'm not going to worry about that until we get the decision.

On the pathway programs, almost all (maybe every one) of Florida's former "community colleges" have been transitioned from two-year to full four-year colleges offering a wide range of bachelors degrees. And all of Florida's major universities (UF, FSU, UCF, FIU, USF, etc) have pathway programs with those colleges in their area or in areas not nearby a major university...including overseas studies for a semester or even a full year. Wow. That is definitely an option if she isn't accepted for summer. Do they have to extend her an offer for Pathways or is it something she just pursues? And can she transfer after one year at Tallahassee Community College?

One thing I have realized is that college applications are up everywhere this year. I assume it's due to people taking a gap year because of covid.

My daughter also applied to Xavier and Miami Ohio (and my son is a junior majoring in Economics & Finance at Miami) and we live very close to Ohio Wesleyan. Good luck to your son!

How does your son like Miami Ohio? Has your DD heard from Xavier yet? My son has not, but one of his friends applied 2 days prior to him and heard about 2 weeks ago.

We were expecting to hear from Xavier earlier, too -- but my daughter checked her portal last night and it had been updated. And then she received her mailed packet today. (She likes what she sees but even with the scholarship they offered, it's still quite a bit higher priced than the other schools she's considering. I am hoping that maybe there's a little more in the full financial aid offer.)

My son has been really happy at MiamiOH. He's in a couple of clubs and has made a good group of friends. He's doing well academically and has an internship lined up for next summer in his intended field, etc. (He only had one semester under his belt before COVID hit, so that has impacted his experience... but compared to what I heard about what other schools did/offered, I think Miami has done a pretty good job.)

My son was accepted to Xavier last night with a great scholarship so its within budget for us. He was very excited. Also accepted to Dayton today but they send out their scholarship information later which is a but of a bummer.

Glad to hear your son likes Miami. I think its a top choice for my son as he really liked it when we visited.

DD signed her letter of intent to play softball at her #1 pick of a college last Wednesday, so now it’s official. We received our first bills to owe money, which makes it even more official - LOL!

Hello everyone. Just checking in. We just dropped our daughter off at the overnight experience at her top choice school. She is pretty excited. We are staying at a hotel 1/2 a mile away. We flew in this weekend from NJ and explored Chicago for a little bit and then drove out to North West Indiana where the school is. So far she likes the town. Tomorrow we have a meeting with her admissions counselor and a tour of the school. We are only doing this because she is REALLY interested in the school, because let me tell you… these little things really add up. Flights, hotel, rental car, food, gas. Let’s see how she feels about it tomorrow.
To the school she had to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, shower shoes and change of clothes. They gave her a dinner voucher and will be providing a breakfast “snack” in the morning.
We will meet up with her around 9 am for the tour

DS has been accepted at all of the schools he's applied for so far. Now we're trying to see where he can play soccer. At least three have told him they want him on the team, but they're all small private schools (nothing wrong with that), but there are things *I* don't like about them (the cost being high on the list). D3 means no athletic money. Two of the schools had their head coaches resign... one the day after DS' visit.

And no, I'm not counting on athletic money, but when you get to these private schools ($$$$$) it may make the difference on whether he can go there or no.

Maybe he'll get offered merit scholarships to offset the cost? I hope he gets offered a good package at the school he wants the most! Playing a sport in college is very impressive, imo. Good for him!
