Class of 2022- High School Parents

Son has received his acceptance to App State and is very happy. He only applied to 2 schools, App and NC State and hasn't heard back from NC State yet. But he thinks even if he gets in, he would prefer App.

Congratulations to your son!!!

My daughter has heard from two smaller state schools and 3 private schools. All offered merit up to $36,000 (which really surprised me). I had been worried since my daughter didn't take SATs but it did not hurt her at all for admission or merit thus far. Strangely the most expensive school is the one her sister went to and had a great deal at. It doesn't matter because she isnt' that interested. She still has 3 bigger schools to hear from.

In terms of the nutcracker I miss those days - my class of 22 daughter stopped dancing after 8th grade but her 4 year older sister danced until she graduated. For skating, our rink closed down on a Thursday night when the recital was Sunday and last year there was skating but no recital. Fingers crossed we get the senior year recital in. It will be really sad it it gets cancelled 3 years in a row.

Sadly, my son did not get accepted to his dream school. I know I’m biased, but I’m still a little shocked. He has great grades in the IB program at one of the best schools in the state, he’s class president, honor society president, a member of several academic clubs, his SAT score is 1570, and he’s a legacy at the university. I know those last two things mean less and less these days, but they were supposedly part of the consideration. He applied early commitment to increase his chances. I didn’t read all his essays, but I know he’s a good writer. I figured the only thing he didn’t have was athletics. I feel so bad for him, because I know how hard he’s worked. I can’t imagine how incredible the other applicants must have been to beat him out. Oh well, he has many other great options.

I’m very sorry to hear this - it doesn’t seem right.
Good luck to him as he applies to other schools.

What school was it, b/c the only school I can imagine rejecting that package is MIT...

I'm so sorry to hear that! It is ridiculous the credentials you need to get into these schools.

It was explained to me that they need to admit a mix of many different types of people so maybe there were a lot of people applying who fit his profile? Meaning, gpa, scores, race, type of activities? I'm also hearing that the number of applicants are higher than ever since people took a gap year both in '20 and '21 because of the pandemic and not wanting to do remote learning. Additionally, if it was a southern school, they didn't lock down as much so people are flocking to those schools for fewer restrictions in the case of future events.

I'm also reading not applying for financial aid might give someone an edge over someone who is applying for it.

DD just got rejected from a college she thought would be an easy acceptance. She didn't even want to go there and it wasn't her top 4. Now she thinks the rest are going to be rejections because she thought this school would be fairly easy to get into. Ugh. Not the process has stopped being so fun.

Anyone know about College of Charleston, and is it supposed to be easy to get into? I read different things about it.

Edit: I went back to my college vine account and it is listed as a safety school. What the heck must be going on, who knows. I really hope they recalculated her GPA or at least looked at the GPA scale of her high school. Her HS uses a weird GPA scale.

Did he have volunteer experience? I remember a few years ago reading an article about the type of candidate that Harvard was looking for. The example they used was someone like “a kid who’s started his own soup kitchen”, ie something innovative that’s “contributed to society”; and something that sets them apart from all the other applicants also at the top of their classes. (As a reference, they only take roughly 1600 out of 40,000 applicants.) I’m sorry your son didn’t get in, and hope he finds somewhere else he’s happy with. He’s a hard worker, for sure, and should be very proud of his accomplishments!

I’m sorry about the rejection. I hope she has better luck with the others. You never know what will happen—I know I’ve given up trying to figure this stuff out!

I don’t know much about the College of Charleston, other than it has a beautiful campus!

Thank you! He’s a great kid, and he seems fully recovered from the rejection. He has a couple more out of state schools he considering, plus hoping UF will come through.

He actually does have a few hundred hours of volunteer service. It was part of his IB requirements, as well as a requirement for some of the Florida Bright Futures scholarships.

Thanks again!

DD just got accepted into UT Dallas, which should have been harder to get into than College of Charleston. Oh, well. I'm just glad it wasn't another rejection! These hit hard.

As @JaxDad says, " I’ve given up trying to figure this stuff out!"

My DD received a merit scholarship from her first choice (and most expensive of what she has applied to) school. The offer essentially covers one year of college, so quite generous. We have a college investment account that will cover another year, plus her grandfather has an account for her that will cover about 1/2 of a year. So her dream school is definitely within reach financially.
She is still waiting on decisions from 3 other schools. Actually, 4 other schools but one does not release their decisions until late February, so that one is out bc she will have made a solid choice by then. She has been accepted to both her first and last choice.
I hope everyone is having a great holiday season and that your students are getting the decisions & financial awards they want!

My DD picked her roommate the other day (actually, they picked each other) and she’s very excited. This girl will be a teammate and she has several similar interests as my DD, which is awesome! Now they are texting and getting to know each other more. This girl lives about 2 hours away from us, so DD is going to see if this girl would like to meet her halfway so they can meet each other in person - exciting times!

I have a question, and I mean this in the most non snarky, friendly way. Why don't people mention the schools their kids have applied to? I would be very interested in knowing where your kids have gotten accepted, what their first choices are, etc. I notice about half or more people itt, and some on other websites, don't state the school names. There must be a good reason for this.

Mine is a privacy reason. This is a public forum. On my private social media, it’s been said.

But I will share that she applied to 7 CSU (California State University) schools and got early acceptance into her top choice. They don’t make regular decisions until Jan/Feb so waiting to hear on the rest, although moot at this point since she already accepted the offer.

I think I mentioned a few of my daughter’s choices a few posts back. She has applied to direct entry PA programs and some of these schools are smaller private colleges that I wasn’t sure if anyone knew.

She also applied to a few schools that I wasn’t aware of until I got the acceptance email lol (University of Vermont).

Valparaiso was her top choice and she was accepted to the direct entry PA program with the most merit money. We are almost 100% sure we will commit.

accepted=
UPitt
Marywood College
Appalachian State
Rutgers in state
Montclair State
DeSales
U of NH
King’s College
She applied to all these schools which academically, she felt comfortable with. The direct entry programs were her “Ivy Leagues” lol. She is a good student, very involved in her community , and was pretty set on what she wanted.
No full rides here. Just a decent amount of merit money to bring Valpo down to the equivalent of In state Tuition.
She loves nature, hiking, riding bikes, scenic views: Hello Vermont and App State! But they didn’t have her program of choice and didn’t really offer a lot of merit scholarships.

Most of the ones DS have applied to are fairly small. I hadn't even heard of some of them.

Accepted:
Xavier
Lindsey Wilson
Bluffton
Transylvania

Applied:
Depauw
Northern Kentucky
Wingate

It's going to come down to where he can play soccer. I know you're not supposed to decide on a school based on a sport (guessing any extra curricular activity), but if he can't play somewhere, it will go off his list pretty quickly. Depauw and Bluffton are pursuing him pretty hard for soccer. Unfortunately they're DIII, so no athletic money.

I THINK if Xavier offers him a spot on the team, that's his first choice.
