I will be going in March to my first one.

Now, I was looking over the list of basic supplies for the classes-if I don't have one of the mentioned items, do I need to buy it or is it something I can do without...like the ink pads since I don't use/put ink on my pages.

And I don't think a paper trimmer is exactly flyer friendly since I'm not planning on checking a bag on my flight...or should I check a bag and buy a paper trimmer since I don't own one?

A paper trimmer is something I would suggest buying as once you atart using it you will use it regularly- it really is the easiest way to cut down paper.

The inks would be a personal preference- they will normally be used for inking edges on pages and if you don't like that look it wouldn't matter if you skip that step.

It is possible to fly with a sliding style paper trimmer. I wouldn't try it with the guillotine style, though. You may or may not be allowed your scissors.

Last year this discussion came up. For the most part it seemed like sliding trimmers were okay, but other types as well as scissors were not. I would call your airline for specifics.

Is it ok to check? I am going to valley forge this summer and will be flying in from CA. Should I just ship my scrapbooking stuff to my parents house ahead of time?

It is fine to check- the official language now states your scissors blade cannot be longer than 4 inches so the really small scissors should be okay.

If you are going to the retreat from your parents house or meeting someone from that house there I would send all my sharp tools so they are not confiscated.

I went to CKC Charlotte in August. I made sure to have everything listed for the classes and in the end we generally didn't use anything except the scissors and adhesive. To tell you the truth, you will save money and learn more by doing the make and takes on the vendor floor. This past year was my first one and next you we are only doing make and takes and maybe one crop.
