Christmas/Holiday 2011 on the Wonder: 8 night Mexican Riviera 12/18/2011

I love the idea of the FEs but we really need to keep it simple since this is a small group and making lots of gifts for everyone during the holidays may be a bit overwhelming (for me anyway). I have actuallly never done the FEs but I have done lots of gift exchanges on previous cruises. We have 8 days on the ship so how about we pick 4 days for the gift giving instead of all 8?

YES!!!! I really like this idea.

I am thinking we should do a get together too, perhaps on sailaway night? It's going to be freezing sailing out of LA Harbor in the dark so maybe after sailaway we can meet in one of the lounges/bars and just chat/share a drink? I know the WOnder is undergoing a big drydock in a few weeks so maybe we can wait to see what the new space by the buffet will be like? That would be a great place to meet!

Another great idea!!!

Katherine - I tried quoting you, but I obviously deleted something!! Anyway, I just wanted to give you credit for your ideas. (o:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! We just booked this awecome Holiday cruise and I am anxious to meet others coming with us. This is going to be our first DCL cruise and I am thrilled to have the Wonder on the West Coast again! Sailing during Christmas will make this extra special!

Anyone else coming? I hope do a meet and greet and maybe have an ornament exchange!?!

Katherine in San Diego

Great minds think alike! I was just thinking about that. I would love to do that. We could make the FE gifts holiday themed maybe? Like little Christmas gifts each day! How fun would that be? :goodvibes Any ideas folks have would be great. I have coordinated FEs on cruises before so I could do that if others are in for it.

Christine

SanDeeKath, Silly Little Pixie, and everyone else,

Thanks for getting this thread going...we just recently moved over to this cruise and would like to join in the group! We're travelling as a group of 9 in three cabins. I along with DW, DD(8) & DD(8); my D-BIL, D-SIL, D-Nephew(12) & D-Niece(9); and last, but not least, my "WONDERful" :rolleyes1 D-MIL

For our immediate family, this will be our 5th Disney cruise and our third to the MR, the last one being in April where we met a ton of new friends. We had an amazing DIS group that made the experience truly special, including over 30 families (about 120 people) in our FE groups. We did a mini-meetup in the terminal and then got together with most of the group at 3pm in the Promenade lounge just before the lifeboat drill. It was awesome to put faces to the names early on and then get to know each other as the cruise progressed. The FE gifts were a huge hit with the kids and I would love to see this group do something as well, even if it's small/simple. For the adults, we even organized to meet at one of the "tasting" experiences and had some laughs while we tipped a few back.

Couple of highlights for newbies...

- We found the environment in Mexico to still be extremely friendly and inviting...no worries.
- We had a very diverse DIS group which added to the fun...first time cruisers to seasoned veterans...SoCal dwellers to families from Australia and Portugal...singles to couples to large families.
- According to the cruise director, there were 1100 kids (yes, 1100!) on the cruise, but there was plenty of room for everyone (my 2 lived in the lab/club a great deal of the time).
- Other than a few minor hiccups, everything was great.

We've done Manzanillo (not so much), PV (Ziplining, town), and Cabo (dolphins, boats) before, so if anyone has any questions regarding anything at all (from bars :drinking1 to beaches :beach:), please ask. Also...anything from embarkation, dining/drinking, kids programs, entertainment, pools, staterooms, ports, weather, debarkation, booking on board, etc. Sorry in advance, but I don't have any pictures of the food (but you can find them in many trip reports (TRs)). Otherwise, we're looking forward to meeting some new friends!!

Thanks for having us and we're looking forward to a great cruise! party:

P.S. Seems to be a lot of San Diego presence on this trip. I've moved on, but still have family still there...I'm a Patrick Henry grad myself.

Tinkerbellll/others,

I imagine there are many ways to do FE gifts...what we've done in the past on DCL was each participating family (voluntarily, of course) was preassigned a day to deliver gifts so there were no "empty stocking" days. For example, if we have 16 families playing, 2 of them deliver each day. So basically, you only deliver once, but you should get something every day. Flexibility was certainly allowed based on schedules, etc. Anyway, just a thought. It sounds like Silly Little Pixie has run one of these before...how did you do it?? Other ideas??

Regarding meetups, I posted above what we've done before (terminal for us early arrivers, and Promenade lounge before the lifeboat drill for everyone) but I'd love to hear what other people have done or would suggest. The advantage of the lounge meetup was we were able to udate our cabin list (based on port upgrades, late changes, etc.) for the FE gift delivery; and, to figure out who everyone is! :grouphug:

Welcome, welcome, welcome!!!!

When we are in PV, we are thinking about using Los Veranos canopy Tours instead of the Disney Company for the ziplining canopy tour. Do you know about that company?

I think my 7 year-old son is going to LOVE the club/lab, too.

WE are going to have so much fun!

Hi everyone! I am so excited to see new people joining in. This is going to be really fun!

FE's can work in many ways. I have done them on all 6 previous DCL cruises. The groups have ranged from 11 cabins (on a 4 night) to 30 cabins on a 7 night. 30 was FULL! But very fun. If I had to guess I'd say we'll end up with 15 cabins or so on this cruise. I have only had one cruise where days were assigned. Generally people just delivered whenever they had time, and there never were any "empty" days! If we decide to assign days, maybe put in a request for a day or two you DON'T want- because it can be really tough if you have a full day in port AND early dining! I have had individuals who delivered over multiple days- say, a little something for the adults one day, and for the kids another day. I myself have always delivered my "cabin" gift only once. On longer cruises I have made gifts for the children as well as something for the whole family (or adults traveling without children). On shorter cruises it was just a family gift. I usually make something, but they can be store bought items as well.

Some really great items I've received in the past were a cloth reversible bag (I took it home and made iron-ons of my door magnets- one gets added for each cruise!), lots of Texas items and recipes from a couple from Texas, a homemade cookbook (small single photo album, with recipe cards added in), door magnets, homemade autograph books for the kids (HUGE hit!), cruise music cds, postcards/pencils/local items (like candies etc) representing the area the cruiser was from. We got neat Boston things, Canadian items, etc. Local sports team pencils etc were fun. I have a picture frame that someone made on my nightstand as we speak! I put a photo of DH and myself at Castaway in it. :goodvibes Probably my least favorite gifts are the rare individuals who just put some candy, and a glow stick or two in a ziplock. I really look forward to the gifts, and they don't have to cost a lot, but it's really fun if it represents the person, or you can tell they took some time to make something. I hope that doesn't sound snotty- I just look forward to getting to know something about the family that is participating. KWIM?

When I have organized it in the past, I had each person who was interested PM me their real names, cabin number, ages of kids, and personal email address. Some people like to personalize gifts and don't want to put their cabin # or kids' names on the boards. So then I make a spreadsheet and email it to everyone involved, sending updates as people join in. Cutting off the list at 30 days out is pretty standard. At that point most people want to finalize their plans. But I would want an initial list going out at least 60 days ahead so you can think of what you might want to do, and could get an idea of the makeup of the group.

Also- having a set meet time on the first day is really important. Everyone who wants to participate in the FE should send at least one family member to drop by and check if there are any cabin changes. Sometimes people upgrade at the port, sometimes they get pixie dusted by DCL even at the port. On my last cruise the coordinator was adamant that we shouldn't have to go to the meet, if you had a different cabin then it was your responsibility to drop a note in all the other cabin's FEs that your room had changed. Well. Guess who upgraded at the port? And spent part of the first day delivering little messages to EVERY FE, with my new room number? But I guess some didn't get it (maybe kids grabbing stuff out didn't take notice of it, or it fell?), because I found out from another member that some of my gifts had just been left outside the old cabin door, and someone took them- and did not turn them in to the front desk. Sigh. I feel bad that someone took the time to make something for us and we never got it!

My kids LOVE to help deliver the FE gifts. And I have a nice map of each deck that I will send, with each cabin highlighted so that it will make it easy to find everyone. :thumbsup2 If I forgot anything, please ask!!!

Yes! I think a meet in one of the lounges is a great idea. I have had meets in Promenade Lounge before, but I will definitely be interested to see if there are new or interesting places to meet! We are so lucky to be able to be a post-drydock cruise!

Christine - Thank you for organizing this and offering suggestions! LOVE that I get to learn from some DCL pros.

Hi Everyone. My DH, DD(turning 8 on the cruise,) and I are first time cruisers, so know nothing about an FE. Could someone please describe, and give me an idea of how many gifts would be required? I am 3rd grade teacher from the Santa Cruz area of CA. Thinking about, planning for, and looking forward to this cruise is making starting back to school this week easier!

Welcome!! Usually people just make a gift for one day of the cruise. I usually have something for the adults/whole family and something for the kids. Often fish extenders will have one pocket for each family member to deliver their "gift". DH and I share a pocket.

Here is a thread that explains a lot about them and what they look like. At the bottom of the firs page is a link to another thread as well:

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=33184281&postcount=2

I will try to post a picture later of what my fish extender looks like and some of the gifts I received. You can make your own FE (directions are in the DCL sticky at the top of the main forum), use bags of some kind, or have one made. I had mine made on eBay by a lady called gradysmommy.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!!!!

When we are in PV, we are thinking about using Los Veranos canopy Tours instead of the Disney Company for the ziplining canopy tour. Do you know about that company?

WE are going to have so much fun!

Tinkerbellll/others,

This is a bit lengthy, but here's an overview from our experience. I'm sure some of the other previous MR cruisers can chime in with their thoughts as well as everyone's perspecitive can be different.

MONEY: There seemed to be some questions on the boards before our trip about Mexico accepting dollars versus Pesos; but we used dollars exclusively and had no problem whatsoever. You would probably get a slightly better exchange rate if you used Pesos (from at ATM, etc), but we didn’t bother with the hassle and felt we did fine. We also used a credit card a few times and got a good rate, but our bank added a small foreign transaction fee (note: don’t forget to advise your bank in advance you’ll be using your card in Mexico).

We did a couple of EXCURSIONS this time and got feedback from others in our group on other ones...

PV: We did the Los Veranos zip line and it was great! Check out their website and the reviews on tripadvisor.com. The employees were amazing and made it a blast. They take photos ($10 each) and video ($40) if you want, but we took some of our own. You finish at a restaurant right by the river while you wait about 1 hour for the return bus (unless you have a private van). We ate lunch (delicious!) and had some ice-cold beer and margaritas while the kids checked out the free (we left a nominal tip) exotic petting zoo. It was very relaxing after zipping through the trees…time well spent.

Anyway, for the particulars…We did not book through DCL as they want a minimum age of 10, and $99/person. I booked it direct through the Los Veranos website http://www.canopytours-vallarta.com/ at 2 adults and two kids for a total of $238. Their minimum age is 6, but we had a couple of "almost 6" kids in our group...no problem. If you book direct you have to take a cab, (we crowded 5 people into each cab) to their office (about $14 in a “yellow” cab, slightly more in a “tourist” or tan cab) or other pickup point (costs a bit less if it’s closer…see website) so that adds a few dollars to the total. You then board a bus (included) for a beautiful ride southbound down the coast to the zip line facility (the bus took us directly back to the ship afterwards).

I booked ahead of time as we had a group of 10 and just wanted to be sure; however, you can do the whole thing for even less money (confirmed this with others we met) by negotiating with the van and tourist taxi drivers inside the port fence (literally just after you walk off the ship). You can basically put a tour package together on the spot and negotiate the price. One family in our group got a 4-hour tour in a private taxi for a total of $75 (went to several sites/beaches but not zip line). Another group we met got a private van to the beach, tequila factory, and zip line for about $50/person. It’s basically whatever you want to do and for whatever you can negotiate. Just to clarify, these are with the tour operators using white vans and tan taxis inside the port fence. They all speak English and were very friendly and fair in my opinion. Even our driver (we took tan tourist cabs this time as I was able to negotiate a good price for two) said he could have gotten the zip line tour for us cheaper if we had not already pre-booked and paid. It’s how their economy works I guess. You could also probably work a deal with a regular yellow taxi cab outside the fence, but from our experience you might have to brush up on you Español first.

Other things in PV: You can walk south from the port to some of the beaches (hotels and beach bars), but they’re a bit close to the port for my taste. You can also take a cab to the Malecón, which is basically a concrete “boardwalk” that runs down the coastal beach to the south in town. There is shopping (including the mercado down by the river), lots of art (statues, unbelievable sand castles), entertainment (guys swinging on ropes from a pole), a beautiful church, and food/drinks. The beaches get nicer the further south you go. If you just want a taste of PV without getting too adventurous, the Malecón is perfect. It’s about a $12 cab ride each way from the port, and full of locals and tourists alike.

Others in our group took the Pirate Ship Excursion (booked though DCL). The Pirate ship picks you up right in the port before setting out to sea. Some had a lot of fun, but others (I want to be honest) had some issues with seasickness onboard. Having not done it personally, I recommend you check it out on the boards. Others did the DCL ATV excursion and had a great time, although they got filthy. You can do a dolphin and/or sea lion swim in PV as well. Be aware DCL charges $35 for non-participants and/or observers for the bus ride to the facility; however, PV lets you take your own pictures (where Cabo does not). There is also another zipline that includes a mule ride and rappelling down a waterfall if you’re so “inclined” (lol). Check out Vallarta Adventures at http://www.vallarta-adventures.com/. I’ve also heard the marina area (to the north of the cruise ship area) is nice but I haven’t been.

CABO: Cabo is simply awesome…the only problem is the ship doesn’t stay very long so you’ve got to get up and get moving. Our kids did DCL’s “Dolphin Kids” excursion for the second time and loved it, as did most of our group who did some type of dolphin event. The big thing to know is they do NOT allow personal photography, but they take amazing photos that they sell. They’re not cheap, but we’ve bought them both times as they were so good. The staff is very professional, and the facility is very modern and is just a short walk from the pier (remember, the ship does not dock in Cabo…you have to tender in). Another note…Cabo Dolphins will not you “walk-in” on your own while the ship is in port so you need to book ahead. I believe you may be able to book ahead through http://www.cabo-adventures.com/ as an alternative (dolphins and other activities). Other than the ATV tour (some of our group went and enjoyed) or a scuba trip (can’t do that just anywhere), I would suggest doing Cabo on your own rather than booking an excursion. You’ll have as much fun (or more!) for a lot less money.

You can do the “pool adventure” for free on the ship, so there’s no need to book that. All the other boat and beach adventures you can book on your own very easily and inexpensively. Here’s what we did: negotiate (don’t be afraid…just be polite and persistent) for a water taxi (just across from the dolphin facility) to take you for a tour of Los Arcos (including a quick look at the fish through the glass bottom of the boat, a good look at the sea lion colony, and amazing views of the rocks and beaches), then across the bay (where you get a perfect photo op of the Disney Wonder), and over to Medano Beach where he’ll drop you off (just tell your Captain what time to come back and get you and he will be there to pick you up). Then rent a beach umbrella ($10…they would not come down from that), throw down your Disney towels, and enjoy a spectacular day at the beach. The water is clear, the sand is clean, and the swimming areas are roped off for safety. It’s the perfect place for that beach family photo with the Wonder in the background. We took our own beach toys for the kids (beach ball, buckets, shovels, etc.). You can get food/drinks at any of the nearby bars/restaurants (watch out…the margaritas were crazy strong! ). One minor negative is there is a fairly steady stream of beach hawkers trying to sell you things, but a polite “No, Gracias” will send them on their way. We had our girls’ hair braided for $10 each. Your only other worry on the beach is making sure you’re not still there when the Wonder sails away! Although, that wouldn’t be all bad I guess.

Your water taxi Captain will arrive promptly to take you back to a dock right next to the tender pier, where you pay him the agreed upon amount plus any gratuity you believe he deserves. Yes, for all you skeptics about Mexico, we didn’t get abandoned on the beach nor would he take any money until the end of our “tour”. And the cost…? I negotiated a private boat for 5 adults and 6 kids for $60 total (and a tip) which I thought was very fair. Side note…if you just want to go directly to Medano Beach (without the “tour”), you should be able to get a water taxi for about $3/person with a little negotiating. Anyway, there is a nice little mercado right where he lets you off, and also a tequila store, bar, and ice cream stand down a walkway right off the end of the tender pier so you can load up before you go back to the ship.

Anyway, if you made it through reading all that I hope it helps. Please let me (or anyone else) know if you have any more questions.

I LOVE the idea of meeting up for a tasting! What a fun idea!

Christine

Our drinking group in April was rather large (50!), so we arranged a "private" tasting session through DCL. It was definitely fun to do it that way; or, we could just see who may be interested and then sign up for one of the regularly scheduled tastings on board (might be easier).

For those unfamiliar, DCL offers a variety of alcohol tastings on sea day afternoons for a fee of around $15 per person. You sign up in advance at the front desk and they charge your room account. The session lasts roughly an hour and is hosted by a staff of bartenders who prepare the drinks and "educate" you on what you are drinking. The price includes 4 to 5 drinks (bargain!), plus some additional "leftovers" for those inclined :drinking1: (we made it well into the double digits on one tasting but needless to say it put a dent in the rest of our day :crazy2:). Tastings are specialized (one "type" of drink per session) and include options like wine, beer, tequila, margharitas, martinis, whiskey, etc. For example, on the martini tasting, you sit down in front of 4-5 different types of martinis and proceed to tip them back as the hosts provided information and history of each one. At the end, there is usually an opportunity for some bonus tasting as mentioned above.

The "private" tasting works as follows. First, they charged us @$20 each, vice the $15 it cost to join a regular event. Second, we had to request a day/time/drink about 30 days out, and lock in the list of people going as well (non-refundable). We polled the group and ended up doing "mixology" which allowed us to break into groups and create (and name) a cocktail of our own using a wide variety of spirits and mixers. I think it ended up being a contest of how much or many types of liquor we could get into a drink and still drink it! It was fun, but the other tastings are more "refined".

Having done it both ways, maybe we could see what spirit people might be interested in (e.g., tequila, or martinis, etc) ahead of time (here on line), follow up at our meetup, and then have everyone sign up individually after that. It's more flexible that way. Whatever we do, I recommend we do it on one of the first two sea days as an "icebreaker". Regardless of how we put it together, it's definitely fun to do it as a group or at least with a few new friends. Let's get the party started! party:

Thoughts?

We are IN! It all sounds fantastic!!!!! My husband is going to love this. I'm a bit of a lightweight (you'd think a full-blooded Italian could handle her liquor!), but I like to try different things. And, the martinis sound especially good!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share detailed info about Los Veranos. I have read many reviews about them. They seem like a fantastic group, but reading your review made all the difference. :goodvibes

Thanks for the great info on the Zip line, Double Trouble! :) My DD is going to be 7. It sounds like she'll be ok on it. My older one really wants to do this but I worry about the younger one being too chicken! The couple we met on the Mariner of the Seas did the same trip in PV and they were in their 70s and raving about how fun it was. I figured if they can do it and they are in their 70s, I can suck it up and do it too! Me being the ultra-height-chicken!

As for FE's, I found some awesome ones on eBay that I am thinking of "investing in!" Should we make the FE/gift exchange a definite plan then? I don't want to buy them and have them sit empty! :lovestruc

Sadly, I don't drink but I am sure my DH would be up for any kind of tasting (except beer).

I think we'll have enough families to do fish extenders, Katherine. Even if it's a small group it's still really fun. It's one of those things that makes a Disney cruise special for my family anyway!

IMG_7500.jpg

This was our door on our March Mexican Riviera cruise. You can see our FE on the side. Gradysmommy not only personalized our FE, she ships pretty quickly. I have also used her to order FE's for my parents, and for friends of ours cruising with us. Other friends have made theirs from little tote bags from Michael's. We cut off the front handles and sewed the back handles to the other bags so they hung neatly. Decorated the front of each bag for each person, and voilà! A Fish Extender! I'm not sure it would hold up to multiple cruises. My FE hangs in my craft room and I use it for holding birthday cards, etc. My mom uses hers in the kitchen to hold mail!

Christine - I love your door! How fun!

I ordered my FE this morning. :) And, I figured out out to personalize those cool license plate frames. Took me a while, but I figured it out.

Questions: Can I laminate magnetic paper? Will the laminate make the paper too heavy? Is the water on the ship good? I am a BIG water drinker, and I need to have good, fresh-tasting water.

When I first booked this cruise, I looked at it like it was going to be somewhat of a one-shot deal for our family. I am beginning to think that I will be booking another cruise when we are onboard!!! Maybe after one of those wine/martini tasting sessions I can talk to my husband about it! :rotfl2:

ZIPLINE: We will possibly be doing Los Veranos again this trip to take my niece and nephew who haven't been. You know your child best, but we had an "almost" 6-year-old on our trip, along with many other kids, who did fine. After gear fitting and a very funny but thorough safety brief, they start you on a very short line (maybe 50 feet long about 10-12 feet in the air) in the trees and work up from there. There is some walking between some of the runs but nothing bad. Before long, you're soaring hundreds of feet above a canyon as comfortable as you can be ("your mileage may vary"). There are 13 or 14 runs in all, with the longest one about 1/4 mile or so...it was awesome! The guys running the show were extremely supportive (and funny) and made it fun and easy for everyone. They will even tandem ride with you or the kids (to take video or just to ease your concerns). There are many reviews of Los Veranos and other ziplines in PV on DisBoards and other sites to help you decide what's best for you.

FEs: We would really hope to see some of us do FEs on this trip as we find it very enjoyable. We can keep the gifts as simple or tailored as everyone would like...it's really whatever everyone wants to do. Last trip we got a mix of simple, useful, decorative, or fun items, with some having a "personalized" touch and others more generic. Our group was pretty large, so our organizer set a "guideline" (not a requirement) of about $1-2 per person for the gifts, but there are many ways to go with this. It sounds like SillyLittlePixie has more experience in this area and posted some good words on this subject already. There are several FEs on ebay or other sites you can order and they look great hanging outside your cabin. We also had some families make their own FE...something very simple and inexpensive, but personalized. It's all about the fun! Lastly, there is no "pressure" to do FEs if you're not interested...it's just something extra that many people in a group may want to join in on. Any volunteers to head this up and get the ball rolling?

TASTINGS: Once we get our DIS group built up, I'd be happy to organize a poll on this subject, throw some options out to the group, and get something organized. Even if someone in your group doesn't drink, they can still come and enjoy the "show". :dance3:

OVERALL: I know there must be a lot of "lurkers" still out there checking out this thread...come on in...we'd love to have you! You can get involved with the group as much or as little as you like. It's nice to have some "built-in friends" before the cruise even starts (especially for the kids), and we still see or correspond with many families we've met in our groups, including meeting at DLR or even cruising together again.

We're really looking forward to this trip and to meeting everyone! For you newbies, keep those questions coming.

Absolutely!!

I'll head up the FE list. If you want to join, just give me a PM. :thumbsup2
Double Trouble, that's a good idea of a general cost. I've spent a little more AND a little less than that before. All depends on what you want to do- things you make that you can find at a good price, may run you less. If you have things you are ordering, it might be a little more. Do whatever is comfortable for you! It shouldn't be about "I should spend xxx".

Thanks also for the Los Veranos info! Great information to have.

Fellow Christmas Cruisers: Are you and your family first seating or second seating for dinner? We are second...figured my big kids could handle it.
