Christmas/Holiday 2011 on the Wonder: 8 night Mexican Riviera 12/18/2011

Yaay! Welcome to the newbies! What are your names? It's hard to tell from screen names these days. ;) I finally set up a countdown clock on my computer so now each day when my computer boots up, I can see when my next cruise is! 141 days and counting...

What an awesome surprise for the kids for Xmas! I really wish I would be able to keep things a secret for that long. My 11 year old is a super spy and even when I said NOTHING ever about a puppy, she figured out that last Xmas the surprise was a new Maltipoo. DRATS! I think she spies on me or listens to me murmur in my sleep....

When can we start making ressies? Does anyone know? Katherine

Yes, you can use Disney dollars or gift cards! We do. My kids will get Disney dollars or gift cards throughout the year from their grandparents, etc for good grades, birthdays, Christmas. Then they use them as their spending money onboard. If they want a souvenir, smoothie, arcade, pins- they buy it themselves! Cuts way down on the I-wants. :thumbsup2 I tell them I brought them here and that anything they want to buy is extra.

The ship is cashless. So when you purchase items, it gets charged to your room. You can choose if your kids have charging privileges or not. I let my kids have charging- and every few days they go to Guest Services and pay their tab!

I love your idea of giving your kids charging privileges, but have them go and pay their tab at guest services every couple days! That is a great idea, and way to make them feel more grown up and responsible. How old are your kids again? I might do something like this... my boys will be 9 and 11 on the cruise. We've never given them charging privaleges, but we might let them this time and do something like what you do. I'll have to think about it. :)

We just booked!

I have been lurking around and reading this thread for a week or so and figured it was time to make it official and post. We were booked on the 2012 Christmas MR cruise, but moved it to this one when the Kids sail Free offer came out for Oceanview Cabins. I admit, I am a little jealous of you guys talking about being in suites and verandah rooms...but at least I'm on board. :lovestruc

We are: me, DH, DS (12), and DD (8)

We can't wait. We've been on DCL a number of times before, but never at Christmas. We're are hoping Disney can make our holiday extra special.

Welcome!! That is so great Disney extended the promo to oceanview rooms!! Yay! So glad you got the great deal and on the cruise. You'll love it and have a great time!! Oceanview rooms are great! We've stayed in them before, and the portholes are huge and fun to look out. :)

We just booked this cruise yesterday. It is our first cruise ever, and we are super excited that it's a Disney Cruise! Looking forward to hearing about everyone's past experiences and plans for this cruise, excursions and all. I'll be cruising with my DH, DS 8, DS 7 and DS 4. The boys don't know about the trip it will be an early Christmas surprise.

Welcome!! How fun to surprise your boys!!! They will LOVE it! And, to make Disney Cruises your first cruise was a great idea! In my opinion, Disney Cruises is the best family cruiseline out there. You'll be hooked for sure... and if you book your next cruise on board, you get a 10% discount and a great On Board Credit! :)

I did a surprise like you are doing a couple months ago, but for Disneyland. I surprised both of our boys AND my DH!! None of them had any idea, and they found out when I pulled up to the airport!! They were all SO shocked, but so excited. It was so much fun.

Katherine, we are silver tier status, and so we can start booking on September 19. So, if you are silver, that is when you start booking as well. If you are Gold or Platinum, you start booking earlier than Sep 19. Exciting!!!

I get to start booking Palo and Port Adventures for our November Eastern Caribbean this coming Saturday!! SOOOO excited!! :)

Take care,
Kathy

I just noticed you are from Yakima. I am just west of the mountains from you in Seattle! :) Another Washingtonian on the MR Christmas cruise! :)

I am gold status so we can start booking September 4. Remember you have to be paid in full to book. Katherine, I think concierge books with Platinum? Am I wrong about that? I am thinking we are only planning on Palo brunch, not dinner this time. We'll see! My kids need to start picking our shore excursions!

Yes we are from Washington! It is going to be such a great surprise for them! We had booked a DCL for the end of March 2012 already which the kids know about, but when I saw the kids cruise free promo, I decided to make this one our first DCL cruise and force my husband to take some time off during the holidays. Crazy, haven't cruised once and have two cruises booked :)

So what are the things I should be reserving? It's just Paulo, right? And maybe the spa? What are the other options? Thanks, Katherine

Palo dinner, brunch, and high tea- you can reserve one of each ahead of time. You can also book spa appointments and excursions. The Palo reservations (especially for sea days) are the hardest to get and that's where early booking based on status helps. If you don't get the day you want, it's almost always available to book on the ship if you go right away when boarding. There will be a central location for any dining changes.

But as a concierge guest, your CM will do all that for you at the concierge reception after boarding. :goodvibes Mike got my DH spa appointments at that time, and we were able to do the club/lab registration right there as well. No need to wait in any lines!

Definitely you'll want to book Palo... it's so worth it! I've only had dinner there, so I can't speak for the brunch or high tea, but if you are a brunch person, I have heard it is very wonderful! I would first book Palo when you have access to make reservations, just because the sea days and the good times (6:00pm - 7:00pm) get snatched up fast. Then, if you do want to book the spa, you can do that.

Also, as soon as you get on the ship, you can book Palo then, too (is it wave bands?? Or one of those little clubs). You can also book a 2nd night at Palo once you are on the ship, if there is availability. My DH and I have done this before (booked Palo online before the cruise, and then booked another night once we got on the ship because there were open slots still) and loved being able to eat at Palo twice for dinner in one cruise. So, if you can't get the time/day at Palo you really want, once you are on the ship, you most likely can get the time/day or at least the day you want... or you can be put on a wait list, and there are cancellations all the time, so if you really want a really popular time/day, then get on the wait list, and if there is a cancellation, they will call you.

One thing with the spa I learned is that I wait to book the spa until I'm on the ship. I do that because they often will have spa specials every day, like 20% off a certain type of massage, and or get a free product with a spa treatment, etc. So, unless there is a specific spa treatment you want at a specific time, I would wait until you are on the ship, and you most likely can get a better deal...

As for shore excursions, yes, I would book those right away, too, especially if you want to do one that has a limited amount of people who can do the excursion, or if you know it's a really popular one.

I don't know if they are doing Port Arrival Times for the LA Port like they are at Port Canveral now. At Port Canaveral, now when you do your online checkin (you can do your online check in when your reservations window opens AND you are paid in full), you have to pick a port arrival time (and they are in blocks of 30 minutes. From what I've heard, if you get a later port arrival time, then you are not allowed to show up at port before that time, so everyone wants to try to snatch up the early times.

Now, I have no idea if they are doing that in LA or not. Does anyone know??

If it is unknown if they are doing that in LA, OR if the ARE doing port arrival times in LA, then when your excursions/Palo/spa booking window opens up, I would also do your online checkin at that time, too, and if they are doing port arrival time slots, then snatch up the time slot that you want, and then you are set.

Of course, if you are concierge, the port arrival time slots may not apply?? I have no idea how that works with concierge.

Hopefully there aren't port arrival times in LA and people can just arrive when they please... I guess i'll find out when I do my online checkin!

They are doing the port arrival times in LA. After I had already done my online check in for my March MR, DCL started implementing it for our sailing! Luckily for me a coworker also on the cruise saw it, told me, and I had to REcheck in! I got I think 10-10:30. I know I arrived a little before 10 and we went right into the port no issues. I don't think they're enforcing it really. I think you have to do it because their website cannot discriminate between Port Canaveral sailings and other ports.

As concierge it doesn't matter what time you get- you get boarding pass #1 so you're going to be first onboard anyway! Boarding should begin around 11:30.

Wow, thanks for the great info, everyone! I am so happy to be concierge. ;) I guess it's one advantage of not having any discounts on the cabins. I like having the convenience of it all. We would definitely like to do Paulo for brunch so that is a biggie for us. I am a HUGE brunch fan! Don't like tea so that's not too tempting.

Are we going to try to do Fish Extenders or maybe a holiday gift exchange for this cruise perhaps? :)

Katherine

Hello All, I am thinking of booking this cruise and have been reading your "meet" Does anyone have experience with the weather and temps at this time of year? Will we be able to swim at the pools and beach? Or will it be too cold? A little worried about rough waters...any thoughts? We sailed the Caribbean last Christmas and it was great. Thank you, Jill

Great minds think alike! I was just thinking about that. I would love to do that. We could make the FE gifts holiday themed maybe? Like little Christmas gifts each day! How fun would that be? :goodvibes Any ideas folks have would be great. I have coordinated FEs on cruises before so I could do that if others are in for it.

Hi there,

We sailed at Thanksgiving last year and the weather was perfect once we got to Cabo. It was definitely warm enough to swim in the pools and the ocean. I recall it being in the low 80s and dry. The weather sailing out of LA is cold and windy, however, and the last day coming back to LA is always really chilly on deck. We have always had calm waters coming and going (have done a LOT of MX cruises) but that is luck of the draw. I would say it's cooler than the Caribbean for sure when you are north of Cabo, but in the south, the temperature is wonderfully warm and the seas are very calm.

Katherine

Thanks for the reply. How about flights? I have done some searching, but cannot find how early people are able to get to LAX from the port. Anyone taking an earlier than suggested flight home on the 26?

Jill

We just booked this cruise today for my family. I'm so excited. I've been on several cruises before (none Disney) but this is the first one for my husband and our 3 girls. I'm looking forward to having a real family vacation and perusing this long thread for suggestions and ideas. Counting down the days already!

It is super exciting, isn't it? I have been reading everything on these boards, and I'm thinking we are in for a pretty special time!

Hi all, My name is name and we will be joining you for the Christmas Cruise. This is my second Disney cruise (9th overall) but my kids DD 6 and DS 4 first Disney although they have cruised other lines. We will be bringing my parents with us. It will also be my kids and my mom's first time to west coast so they are excited. If anyone has any helpful hints on the cruise since it has been about 8 years since i have cruised Disney it would be appreciated. Also, any tips on Mexican Riveria since this will be my first cruising from the west coast.

My husband and I think our kids (even the oldest!)would enjoy this! Please share some info about the process, etc. I especially think my younger son and daughter will enjoy delivering little gifts to other kids. So fill me in on the details!

Welcome to the newbies!

I love the idea of the FEs but we really need to keep it simple since this is a small group and making lots of gifts for everyone during the holidays may be a bit overwhelming (for me anyway). I have actuallly never done the FEs but I have done lots of gift exchanges on previous cruises. We have 8 days on the ship so how about we pick 4 days for the gift giving instead of all 8? :confused3

I am thinking we should do a get together too, perhaps on sailaway night? It's going to be freezing sailing out of LA Harbor in the dark so maybe after sailaway we can meet in one of the lounges/bars and just chat/share a drink? I know the WOnder is undergoing a big drydock in a few weeks so maybe we can wait to see what the new space by the buffet will be like? That would be a great place to meet!

As for the Mexican Riviera, there is a TON to do but it really depends on your kids and what age they are and whether you want relaxation or adventure... We did the Cabo dolphin swim last time (kids were 5 and 10 then) and they both ADORED it. It was the highlight of our trip. The dolphin pool is RIGHT off the area where the tender drops you so it's very easy to get to. Others went to the beach or to a resort. Some people went on the pirate ship and I heard that was fun. Snorkeling is not too great around Cabo and the waters are more chilli than further south. You can get a TON of info on cruisecritic.com. Just go to the MR destination page.

As for PV, last time we went to the Crystal resort if I remember correctly. It was gorgeous with HUGE pools to swim in and a lovely beach. Drinks and food were included and it was not pricy. We took a cab but if you like to walk, it's doable. The beach by the dock is also nice and has a lot of activities like parasailing and those banana boat things to ride. There is a dolpin swim excursion in PV too and it gets great reviews but it's a 45 min drive and our friends did not like the hot bus they were shuttled in. Also the roads are not that smooth so they got carsick. I also met a couple who ziplined in PV and raved about that too. You have to be much older to do that!

Check out the cc website because there is a TON of info. Instead of asking on the Disney board section, head to the MR section. It's fast paced and packed with info!
