those were the two hotels I've been able to get with points. the marriott I'm guessing is nicer than the courtyard, but seems like being downtown would be better. or am I wrong? (this is a no-kids trip).

I don't think the Marriott on Ashland is in the best neighborhood. I may be wrong, because there might be another one. If you give us the address we could probably help you out a little more.
Also, what are you going to be doing here if you are doing the tourist thing I would stay downtown, but if this is for work I would stay closer to where I had to be. It would take forever to get in and out of downtown Chicago during rush hour traffic.

Being local, I've never stayed at either hotel. The Michigan Ave. location (Magnificent Mile) is probably better from a logistics standpoint. There's plenty to do within walking distance and you'll have access to the trolleys. The Ashland location is near the University of Illinois--Chicago campus. It's close to Taylor Street with great Italian restaurants and not far from Greek Town. There's nothing wrong with the neighborhood, and you can take the Blue Line elevated train to get to the Loop and Mag Mile. My guess is that if the upscale accomodations are more important than convenience, go with the Marriott. If you want to be able to get around easily, stay at the Courtyard.

We stayed at the Magnificent Mile Courtyard last weekend and it was a very nice hotel. Clean, very nicely furnished, friendly, helpful staff and a great location. One block from Michigan Ave, a longish but manageable walk to Navy Pier and lots of restaurants in the area. We really liked it and would defiently return in the future--especiually with the great rate I got off of Travel Zoo.

Courtyard definitely. Location is key in Chicago. I stayed at the Courtyard several years ago and it was nothing fancy. But it was clean, comfortable and good location.

Mag Mile, no contest. Enjoy your trip...it's freezing here right now, maybe into the 50's over the next 2 weeks. Bring a hat for your ears from the wind!

I vote for the Magnificent Mile, too. :thumbsup2

My family is here from PA to visit us for Easter. This is their first trip to Chicago. They are staying at the Hampton Inn downtown. I noticed the Courtyard is right near where they are. It's in a great location - lots of restaurants and shopping within walking distance.

HTH!! :flower3:
