This is a great thread! I'm going to get a little long-winded here, so if you tend to fall asleep during political debates, stop reading here.
Here's a few selected quotes:
When a political party is in opposition, they can and will spout their party line, particularly if the party has no hope of winning (i.e. the NDP). But what happens when they actually win? Look at Bob Rae's NDP in Ontario - as a result of their election and their desire to implement their party ideology Ontario was stuck with the horrible "Social Contract" and with fiscal mismanagement at such a level that it took the equally horrible years of Mike Harris' government to start to fix the problem. Did the provincial NDP lie to the Ontario public? Perhaps it didn't start out that way, but once they got into power they realized there was no way they could do everything they promised. Same with Chretien and the GST. He may have honestly believed he could eliminate the GST. (Oops - I just realized I've used the word honestly in the same sentence as Chretien. Please excuse the oxymoron.
) And I feel sorry for anyone who voted for the Liberals based on that one promise, but I never believed it anyway. Even if they had eliminated the GST, they would have had to raise taxes elsewhere because the government still needed that revenue.
In summary - I rarely believe anything the opposition parties promise during an election, because they have no idea what the current state of affairs really is, either with respect to finances or the bureaucracy. Look no further than the Ontario Liberals. And I rarely believe anything the incumbent government have to say because if they really were going to implement the things they promised, they've already had four years to come through on it but failed.
Sigh. Maybe I'll just vote Green....

Chretien and his promise to get rid of the GST is one I will never forget...
I don't think there's one party that's worse than the others.
